Work Text:
As the one year anniversary of Marceline and Bonnie living together approached Marceline wanted to do something special for her girlfriend. The only problem was that she kind of blew all her best ideas on the first time they were in a relationship. Now while things felt so familiar and new at the same time, the memories were still there. What would Bonnie love that doesn't involve science and experiments?
Marceline wasn't really much of a brainiac and the few times she had been to Bonnie's lab it was not to help her with what ever she was working on.
Speaking of that she was still down at the lab. Now Marceline may not have an idea of how to spend their day but it sure as hell won't be with Bonnie stuck at her desk. At least if Marceline has anything to say about it. She grabbed her trusty axe-guitar and flew into the part of the cave that Bonnie made into her makeshift lab when she first moved in with Marceline so many years ago.
It needed to be a little touched up, Marceline secretly kept it clean, but the tech was way overdue for an upgrade. Which they did together, making a sort of date out of the whole day. It was enjoyable and Marceline certainly didn't mind breaking a sweat to make Bonnie happy.
Her flight allowed her to sneak in completely unheard. Just as she thought Bonnie was working on something at her desk. What ever it was it seemed to be important seeing as the Candy Princess was mumbling and cursing under her breath. "What's got your pretty brain occupied other than me?" Marceline floated above her girlfriend's head and tried to sneak a peak at her work.
"Marceline! You're not supposed to be in here! Yet!" The Princess threw herself across the table to hide her project, her face blushing from pink to almost red.
"Oh ho ho, and why not. Hiding something from me?" She tried to push her way past her girlfriend but Bonnie turned and pushed her off. "You know it only makes me want to know more. I can help." Bonnie mumbled to herself again, her face that of insecurity. "I wanna help you and then we can spend the day together. Come on Bonnie, it's our-" Bonnie turned back around quickly.
"Just a bit more Marcie, I promise I'm almost done. This is really important." This felt familiar too and not in the good way.
Marceline sighed and flew back, her fingers playing on strings a little harsher than she thought she would. "Sure. I'll be waiting for you upstairs. Don't fall asleep and make me drag you out of here." She sounded a whole lot of more bitter as she flew away.
This was fine, Bonnie was just busy, she was a scientist and an inventor at heart like Marceline was a singer and song writer. These were their passions and neither ever wanted the other to stop doing what they loved and enjoyed... is what Marceline's usual way of thinking is but today was different, today it pissed her off that Bonnie was being kept away from here.
But it was still fine... this was one bad day of many great days they had together.
Finally Bonnie entered their living room, looked tired and collapsed on the couch. She sighed heavily and rubbed her eyes. "Done."
"Nice of you to join me." Marceline all but hissed the words out as she sat down next to Bonnie, her guitar between them and her leg thrown over one side of the couch. She hated any kind of wall being put between them. "I thought about making you a snack but it would have gotten cold until now."
"Awww, Marcie! That's so thoughtful of you." She threw her arms around the vampire's shoulders and kissed her cheek with an exaggerated 'mwah' sound. "I would have eaten it anyway, I'm sure it would have tasted great if you out effort in it. Speaking of that, I want to show you my project!" As she was reaching into her pocket Marceline put her hand on her arm.
"Unbelievable. You still don't get it do you? You still... Ugh!" She put more distance from herself and Bonnie which only made the scientist frown at her behavior. "You make me feel like a real idiot at times like this."
"What? Marcie, you're not an idiot! You're amazing!" So Bonnie said but right now Marceline had a bit of trouble believing it.
"Yeah I'm so amazing you'd rather lock yourself up in your lab than spend our moving in anniversary together. I feel really special. Like nothing changed at all. Do you even want to be with me or are you with me just so you're not all alone at the end of the day?" Her insecurities came out in spades as she turned to her girlfriend, her eyes flashing red in anger.
Bonnie's eyes widened with an added degree of hurt and recognition. "Marceline, I wasn't locking myself away. I love being around you. But this... it... here." She presented her Marceline with a necklace, a ring on a chain. "I've got one too. It's got a built in database of some of our best moments. Photos, videos, talks, your music. I wanted to give you... the best of me. So when you go on tour and you don't have time to call me you can look at these, and neither of us are alone. Or will ever be alone."
"Bonnie... wow you really thought of this long term huh. Now I'm feeling like an asshole. All I got is a guitar and a theoretical dinner." And here she was thinking she was bringing so much to Bonnie's anti-social table. Nothing as cool as a high-tech ring. Best she can do is a wedding ring a few years down the line. If things keep working out.
"And a forked tongue." She smirked and leaned in close but just out of reach for Marceline to kiss. "And compassion, humor, sick guitar skills, bravery, there's a lot about you that I love. As for me I should probably work on showing you how much I love you. I wanted to keep a secret but I see how it may have come across as dismissive of your company." She placed the necklace around Marceline's neck and topped it off with a kiss on the top of her nose. "Can you put it on me?" Bonnie turned around and swept her hair off her neck.
"With pleasure Princess." Tonight she was putting a necklace around her girlfriend's neck and some day she was gonna put a ring on that finger.
