Work Text:
Chuuya leans back in his chair, tipping his head back.
“Sit up,” Mori says.
“But we’ve been waiting on Dazai for an hour. I don’t have the composure to keep sitting still.”
Mori glares at him, and he sits up again with a sigh.
“Did you tell him the right time for this meeting?” Mori asks, sounding incredibly annoyed.
“Yes, sir, though I’m still not sure why I had to tell him. Was he not answering his phone?”
“No, and he told me that he lost it. So that’s why I had you tell him.”
“Well, he’s either blowing us off, or just trying to screw with us by being late.”
Chuuya folds his arms. Then the door slams open, and Dazai strides in.
“I am here.”
“Yeah, only an hour late, dipshit.”
Dazai puts a hand on his chest.
“How dare you, Chuuya.”
“Sit down,” Mori says, motioning to the chair next to Chuuya.
Dazai throws himself down, subtly kicking Chuuya’s ankle. Chuuya not so subtly kicks him back.
“Stop that you two,” Mori says, sounding even more annoyed now.
Chuuya straightens up, and Dazai turns to look at Mori.
“Yes, sir. What do you need from us?” Dazai asks, mock saluting.
“I have a mission for you two. It’s of the utmost importance.”
Mori then spends the next fifteen minutes talking about how important it is that the two of them learn how to peacefully work together. Then he finally gets to the point and starts to tell them about their mission.
“I think Chuuya fell asleep,” Dazai says right as Mori starts talking about their mission.
“What?” Mori asks, turning to look back at them instead of his embellished hand motions.
“Hm?” Chuuya asks, opening his eyes again. “I wasn’t asleep. I was just resting my eyes.”
Dazai bites his fist to stop himself from laughing. Mori looks mad, but continues telling them about their mission. They have to break into a warehouse that’s being guarded by a powerful skill user. Once inside, they have to steal documents pertaining to the mafia’s current trade routes.
“Why do these people have our trade routes?” Chuuya asks, rubbing his eyes.
“They stole them.”
“Wait, who are these people?” Dazai asks.
“They work for the government.”
“Oh, ok.”
“Is there anything else that we should know going into this?” Chuuya asks, chewing on his bottom lip.
“No, nothing else. You’re dismissed, so get a move on.”
Chuuya stands up, and Dazai follows him out.
“It feels like he’s setting us up, doesn’t it?”
Dazai nods.
“Yes, Chuuya, it definitely does. He’s testing us, just on what, I’m not sure.”
Chuuya hums.
“So how do you want to work this?”
Dazai makes a face.
“I’m not sure yet. I think I want to think about it for a few minutes.”
“Ok.”
They walk to the parking garage in silence.
“Are we taking my bike, or a car?” Chuuya asks.
“I wanna go on your bike. It goes zoom,” Dazai says seriously.
Chuuya stares at him for a minute before nodding.
“Has Mori texted you the address yet?” Dazai asks as they get over to Chuuya’s bike.
“No, I’m going to text him to make sure that he didn’t just forget.”
It’s only a few minutes later when Chuuya climbs onto his bike.
“I have confirmation. I’m certain that he forgot.”
Dazai laughs as he climbs on behind Chuuya.
“He’s such an old man.”
They drive twenty miles over the speed limit the entire way to the warehouse. There are cars parked at random spots with people sitting in them.
“Wow, that’s a lot of undercover cops,” Chuuya comments as his eyes scan the area around them.
“Yeah, I’m glad that we’re both wearing full helmets. No one can see our faces like this, and they probably think we’re minors, and not something worth reporting.”
“We are minors,” Chuuya reminds him.
Dazai huffs.
“Yeah, but we’re like adulty minors.”
“That makes no sense, but ok. I’m like ninety percent sure that it’s that warehouse up there,” he says, motioning with a tip of his head.
“Pull over here, and tuck your bike in that alleyway.”
Chuuya pulls over, then tucks the keys into his pocket.
“Ok, what do we do now?”
“We’re going to sneak in. If there are too many guards, or something, we can just brute force our way in. Mori said that there’s a powerful ability user, but it wasn’t plural. So, I’m not too worried about our fighting chances if it comes down to it.”
“Fair. So, I bash people’s heads in while you get the plans. If we can sneak in, then I’m the lookout, and you look for the plans?”
“Exactly.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
They walk to the warehouse, but are seen almost immediately because they start bickering pretty loudly. One of the men guarding the outside runs up to them, but Chuuya knocks him out with a single punch without even looking at him.
“Why would you say that I suck at driving? I literally drove us here just fine.”
“You were going so slow. We were like inching along.”
“We were not. We were driving over the speed limit.”
“No way we were driving over the speed limit. We didn’t even have to outrun cops to not get pulled over.”
“That’s what you think happens every time you speed?”
“Yes, of course I do.”
By then cops have surrounded them, all pointing their guns at the duo.
“You see, you’re drew everyone out here,” Dazai says, waving at the policemen.
“I’m pretty sure that was you, but whatever.”
He pulls Dazai closer, quickly letting go of him. Dazai is barely not touching Chuuya, who turns to the nearest officer.
“What are you doing here?” the officer demands.
“We’re here to steal something,” Chuuya says.
The officers start glancing at each other, not really sure what’s going on.
“Can you just get to the part where you try to shoot us, so we can get this over with?” Dazai asks, tapping his foot impatiently.
“Dazai, you can’t ask someone to shoot you. That’s stupid. They’re not going to want to shoot you just because you said that.”
One of the cops steps forward, reaching towards Chuuya.
“Put your hand behind your back. You’re under arrest.”
Chuuya snaps the man’s wrist, snatching his gun with his other hand. There’s stunned silence for a moment, and then the rest of them start shooting. Dazai ducks down while Chuuya just stops the bullet right before they hit him. He sends them back, one for the head of each person who fired. He knocks out the man that he already took his gun.
“Alright, let’s hurry up so I can get home and take a nap.”
“Why? You already took one in Mori’s office.”
“I didn’t take a nap. He was just being really annoying. Either way, I had to get up early this morning to meet with Kouyou before her work started.”
“That woman is so demanding,” Dazai says, scrunching up his nose. Chuuya nods. They head inside, Chuuya easily taking out the guards inside.
“Find the routes, I’m going to look around for this ability user,” Chuuya says, already making his way to the edge of the room.
Dazai starts looking through the different spots that the routes could be hidden. Before Chuuya can even open the first door, it flies off of its hinges, barely missing him.
“Woah.”
Something flies through the open doorway, moving fast enough that Chuuya can’t tell what it is. He lunges forward, slamming into Dazai right before the item does. It shatters against the wall, shards flying. Chuuya spins Dazai around and out of the way. Dazai looks startled, but they both quickly turn back to the doorway.
“Keep looking, I’ll watch your back.”
Chuuya heads back that way as a man appears in the doorway. He’s not a large dude, and he’s dressed in all black. He tosses something else into the air, and it gains speed at an alarming rate. Chuuya catches it out of the air before it can hit Dazai, which is obviously his target.
He’s aiming for Dazai so I have to focus on Dazai instead of actually stopping him. This is not a huge ability, but it could be really useful with someone who knows what they’re doing. He seems to, but what should I do?
Chuuya ends up staying on defense for the next ten minutes, barely able to keep him and Dazai in one piece due to the man’s speed.
“I found it,” Dazai says.
“Good, now get out of here. Wait by my bike.”
Dazai doesn’t argue this time, knowing that he’s currently in the way, and has no way of touching the man right now. He ducks back out, and Chuuya turns to the man with a feral grin.
“You know what this means?”
The man shrinks back slightly, and Chuuya darts towards him. He meets Dazai by his bike a few minutes later.
“I knocked him out with one punch. Though the punch was strong enough to knock him through a wall, so there’s that.”
Dazai laughs.
“Nice. Let’s head back to base, and then we can go to your apartment.”
“Who said that you can come back to my apartment with me?”
“Me, I did. I wanna play video games.”
Chuuya rolls his eyes as he climbs back on his bike.
“Can I drive?”
“No.”
It doesn’t take them long to get the stuff dropped off, and drive back to Chuuya’s apartment. Chuuya grabs snacks out of his kitchen while Dazai turns on Mario Kart. He’s sitting down in front of Chuuya’s couch, leaning back against it. Chuuya sits down next to him, putting the tray of snacks on the table.
It’s quiet while they’re setting up, then Dazai says, “Hey, thanks for having my back.”
Chuuya turns to look at him, surprised.
“Yeah, no problem. I’ll always have your back.”
“Promise?”
“I promise,” Chuuya says, a little antsy from how suddenly this conversation shifted.
“I promise to always have your back too,” Dazai says before turning back to the TV.
Chuuya smiles as he grabs his controller.
“Cool.”
