Work Text:

Bill Cipher had once again played his usual tricks, weaving a web of deceit that ensnared Dipper Pines. Dipper, despite his usual vigilance, had fallen for one of Bill's schemes. A deal was struck, and Bill had wrested control of Dipper’s body. The demon reveled in the rush of power and the intoxicating sensation of being in the physical world, a jarring contrast to his usual spectral existence. Every heartbeat, every breath was a novel thrill for him.

Yet, Bill had not anticipated the complexities of human interactions, especially when it came to Mabel Pines. He barely had a moment to relish his triumph before Mabel burst into the attic, a whirlwind of infectious energy and boundless enthusiasm. Her smile was as radiant as ever, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Dipper, Dipper! Guess what!" she squealed, her voice brimming with joy. Mabel bounded over to him, her movements a blur of uncontainable energy. Bill, still acclimating to his new host's body, was caught off guard. Before he could react, Mabel tackled him in a jubilant hug, her arms wrapping around him with a fierce, affectionate squeeze.

The sudden physical contact was startling for Bill. He could feel the warmth of her embrace, the genuine love and affection she had for her brother radiating through her touch. Bill stiffened, his hands hovering awkwardly in the air, fingers twitching uncertainly. He was accustomed to dealing with people’s minds, not their emotions, and certainly not their physical interactions. Human touch was foreign, and Mabel's enthusiastic embrace sent an unexpected shiver through his stolen form.

"Uh. Hey Sho—er, Mabel," Bill said, doing his best to mimic Dipper’s cadence and mannerisms. He hoped she wouldn’t notice the slight waver in his tone or the rigid way he held himself. "What’s got you so excited?"

Mabel pulled back slightly, her grin never faltering. Her eyes sparkled with uncontainable joy as she began to speak, seemingly oblivious to his discomfort. "I finally got Gabe to go on a date with me! Can you believe it? This is the best day ever!"

Her excitement was palpable, her happiness radiating off her in waves that Bill could almost feel. It was both fascinating and disconcerting. Each ripple of her joy seemed to wash over him, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He had always viewed emotions as tools to be manipulated, yet here was Mabel, so genuine and unguarded. Her enthusiasm was an open book, written in a language he had never cared to learn. It threw him off balance, her sincerity a stark contrast to the deceit he thrived on.

"Uh, that’s great, Mabel," Bill said, struggling to muster a semblance of enthusiasm. He wasn’t sure how Pine Tree would normally react, but he figured encouragement was a safe bet. He forced a smile that felt awkward and unfamiliar. "Congrats, I guess."

Mabel, however, seemed to take his awkward response as typical Dipper behavior. She hugged him tighter, her joy spilling over in a flood of warmth and affection. "Thanks, bro! I knew you’d be happy for me. Oh, I have so many things to plan! Outfits, places to go, conversations! This is going to be amazing!"

Her grip was firm and comforting, her energy infectious. Bill could feel her heartbeat against his chest, a rapid, joyous rhythm that resonated through his borrowed body. The sheer force of her emotions was almost overwhelming, a stark reminder of the human connections he had always dismissed. Her genuine happiness and excitement were alien to him, yet he found himself momentarily captivated by their purity, a brightness that cut through the shadows of his usual existence.

Bill awkwardly patted her back, feeling increasingly out of his element. Mabel’s touchiness and the sheer force of her affection were things he hadn’t anticipated. As a demon, he was used to fear, anger, and desperation—emotions he could manipulate to his advantage. But Mabel's pure, unfiltered joy? It left him feeling oddly flustered.

He needed to regain control of the situation. "So, uh, what's this Gabe guy like?" he asked, hoping to steer the conversation into safer territory.

Mabel finally released him from the hug, stepping back with a bounce in her step, her eyes sparkling with uncontainable excitement. "He's super sweet and funny! He’s amazing at puppets and makes his own plays. And get this—he said he thinks my sweaters are cool!"

Bill raised an eyebrow. "Your sweaters? Really?" He struggled to understand the significance, the whimsical knitwear always seeming like an odd choice to him—odd in a sparkly, nauseatingly cute way, not in a chaotic, fantastically weird way. But Mabel's enthusiasm was unwavering, her face lighting up with genuine pride.

"Yeah! Isn’t that awesome? Most people just think they’re weird, but Gabe likes them! I knew he was special." Mabel practically swooned, her eyes taking on a dreamy quality, as if she were envisioning a perfect future. Little hearts seemed to float around her head, her joy almost palpable.

Bill nodded, trying to appear engaged despite his inner confusion. The intensity of Mabel's happiness was a force to be reckoned with. "Sounds like you found someone who appreciates your... unique style."

Mabel beamed, clearly pleased with his response. She started pacing the room, her mind already racing with ideas for her upcoming date. Her excitement seemed boundless, each step filled with anticipation and joy. Bill watched her, a mixture of fascination and confusion playing across his borrowed features. Her energy was infectious, filling the room with a vibrant, almost tangible warmth.

As Mabel continued to chatter excitedly about date plans and potential outfits, her voice animated and full of life, Bill found himself caught off guard by the warmth of her presence. Each word she spoke painted vivid pictures of her excitement, her love for life shining through in every detail she shared. Despite his best efforts to maintain his usual detachment, he couldn’t deny the strange, almost comforting sensation of being around her. It was a feeling he didn’t quite understand and wasn’t sure he wanted to.

He observed her closely, noting the way her eyes sparkled with ideas, her cheeks flushed with excitement. There was something disarming about her openness, her unfiltered emotions laid bare without a hint of reservation. The sincerity of her happiness was a stark contrast to the deceit and manipulation he was accustomed to, and it left him feeling uncharacteristically unsettled.

"Hey, Dipper?" Mabel's voice broke through his thoughts, a gentle interruption that pulled him back to the present.

"Yeah?" he replied, his voice slightly hesitant as he tried to shake off the unfamiliar sensation of warmth that had settled over him.

Mabel's expression softened, her previous exuberance giving way to a more tender, heartfelt look. "Thanks for listening. You always know how to make me feel better," she said, her smile softening into something more sincere. The glow in her eyes spoke volumes, a silent testament to the deep bond she shared with her brother—or at least, the brother she thought she was speaking to.

Bill forced a smile, hoping it looked genuine despite the odd mix of emotions churning within him. "No problem, Mabel. That's what brothers are for, right?" The words felt foreign on his tongue, yet he knew they were what she needed to hear.

Mabel nodded, her eyes twinkling with affection. "Right. You're the best, Dipper," she said, her voice full of unwavering conviction.

She hugged him again, her arms wrapping around him with a familiar ease that contrasted sharply with the tumult within him. This time, Bill found himself hesitantly returning the embrace, albeit still awkwardly. His movements were stiff, uncertain, as if he were navigating uncharted territory. The gesture felt strange but not entirely unpleasant; it was an odd sensation, one that he couldn't quite categorize or dismiss.

The warmth of her embrace seeped into him, a stark contrast to the cold, calculating nature he was accustomed to. For a moment, he allowed himself to get lost in the simplicity of the interaction, the genuine connection that Mabel so freely offered. Her heartbeat, steady and comforting, resonated through their shared space, creating an odd sense of calm within him.

But then reality came crashing back. He was Bill Cipher, a dream demon of chaos and weirdness, inhabiting the body of a human boy. He couldn’t afford to get distracted by Mabel’s warmth and affection. He had a plan to execute, a scheme that required his full attention. This temporary softness, this fleeting moment of humanity, was something he could not indulge.

As Mabel pulled away, still beaming with excitement, Bill forced himself to regain his composure. Her warmth lingered on his skin, a stark reminder of the brief connection they had shared. He did his best to ignore the small pang of pain in his chest when her body left his, a strange ache that he couldn't quite place. "I'm sure your date with Gabe will be great," he said, injecting as much warmth into his voice as he could muster, trying to sound more like the supportive brother Mabel believed him to be.

"Thanks, Dipper! You're the best!" Mabel exclaimed, her eyes shining with gratitude and joy. She gave him one last enthusiastic squeeze, her arms wrapping around him tightly, her warmth enveloping him in a cocoon of affection. Her embrace was fierce and heartfelt, a physical manifestation of her boundless love for her brother. Before he could fully process the sensation, she released him and dashed out of the room. Her footsteps echoed down the hallway, a rhythmic beat of excitement and anticipation.

Bill stood there for a moment, the room suddenly feeling much quieter and emptier. The echoes of Mabel's joy still reverberated in his ears, a stark contrast to the silence that followed her departure. He hadn’t expected this—hadn’t expected to feel anything at all. Yet Mabel's boundless energy and genuine affection had stirred something in him, something he couldn’t quite identify.

He took a deep breath, trying to shake off the lingering sensations that clung to him like a second skin. He was Bill Cipher, after all. He had more important things to focus on than the fleeting warmth of a human connection. But as he resumed his role as Dipper, the facade slipping back into place, he couldn’t shake the lingering warmth of Mabel’s hug or the way her excitement had momentarily pierced through his defenses.

For the first time in his long existence, Bill Cipher felt something akin to uncertainty.
