Notes:

title is from head over heels by tears for fears

okieeee soooooooooo i actually had planned a lot more for this story so i may or may not make a second chapter for it.

it’s implied rather than stated, but soulmates exist in this world! (ˊᵒ̴̶̷̤ ꇴ ᵒ̴̶̷̤ˋ) while humans are not aware of soulmate bonds, magical creatures can fully sense them! bonds are made of magic, so only beings who have the ability to wield at least some form of magic can feel them. although humans are unaware of the existence of these bonds they still have them

Work Text:

Mabel Pines wasn't sure what to expect when they entered Mrs. Henderson's mindscape, but it certainly wasn't this. The landscape was a bizarre mix of shifting shapes and surreal, twisted imagery. The sky seemed to change colors at random, ranging from deep purples to eerie greens, while the ground beneath them felt both solid and liquid, pulsating with an unnatural rhythm. Strange, distorted creatures flickered in and out of existence, their forms melting and reforming in grotesque ways. It was like being inside a living, breathing nightmare.

Mabel's eyes widened with wonder and a hint of unease as she took in the scenery. She marveled at the oddities surrounding them, from floating doors that led to memories to giant clocks ticking backwards. Meanwhile, Dipper was a few paces ahead, his brow furrowed in concentration. He was focused on finding the source of the curse that plagued Mrs. Henderson, causing her severe insomnia and increasingly erratic behavior.

Mrs. Henderson had come to the Mystery Shack desperate for help, her eyes sunken with fatigue and her hands trembling. Stan had initially scoffed at the idea of curses, waving off her concerns as nonsense. However, Dipper and Mabel, seasoned veterans of the weird and supernatural occurrences in Gravity Falls, knew better. They'd seen enough strange phenomena to recognize when something wasn't right. After a brief investigation, they'd discovered that her mindscape was being corrupted by an unnatural force, warping her thoughts and emotions.

So here they were, navigating the labyrinthine corridors of Mrs. Henderson's subconscious landscape with nothing but their wits and whatever Dipper had stuffed into his trusty backpack. The atmosphere was thick with an otherworldly quality, and the very air seemed to hum with a sinister energy. Each step they took echoed unnervingly in the silent void, and Mabel couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

And then, of course, there was the elephant—or rather, the triangle—in the room.

Bill Cipher, the infamous triangular dream demon with a penchant for chaos, had appeared seemingly out of thin air. He hovered in the air, a glowing, golden-yellow triangle adorned with a single, ever-watching eye. His familiar top hat and bow tie added an almost comical touch to his otherwise menacing form. Bill's presence was immediately recognizable, and Mabel felt a cold shiver of unease travel down her spine at the sight of him.

Dipper, standing beside her, stiffened instantly. His shoulders tensed, and he clenched his fists, eyes narrowing with a mixture of wariness and determination. He was already on high alert, fully aware of the potential danger Bill represented. The last time they'd encountered the demon, things had nearly gone catastrophically wrong, and Dipper wasn't about to let his guard down now.

Bill Cipher's appearance in the mindscape was jarring, like a splash of bright yellow paint on a dark canvas. His glowing form stood out against the twisted backdrop of Mrs. Henderson's subconscious, casting an eerie light that only seemed to enhance the strangeness of their surroundings. As he hovered, his single eye gleamed with a mischievous glint, and his top hat tilted slightly to one side, adding an air of casual arrogance.

Dipper's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched. He didn't trust Bill, not after all the chaos the demon had caused in Gravity Falls. The memory of their previous encounters was still fresh in his mind, and the tension in his voice was palpable as he spoke. "What are you doing here, Bill?" he demanded, trying to keep his voice steady despite the unease churning in his stomach.

Bill drifted closer, his movements smooth and almost languid. He radiated an aura of smug confidence, as if he found the whole situation amusing. His eye flickered with an unnatural light, and he grinned—as much as a triangle without a mouth could grin—with a playful malevolence. "Oh, just checking in on my favorite mortals. You know how it is," he replied, his voice oozing with a lazy drawl. "Mindscapes are like playgrounds for me."

The words sent a chill down Mabel's spine. The idea of Bill treating someone's mind as a playground was unsettling, to say the least. She clenched her fists, feeling a surge of protectiveness and wariness. Bill's presence here could only mean trouble, and she knew they had to be careful. Her eyes narrowed, her mistrust evident. She couldn't shake the feeling that Bill had more involvement in this situation than he was letting on.

"Are you the one who placed the curse on Mrs. Henderson?" Mabel asked, crossing her arms defiantly. Her voice was steady, but her eyes were sharp, watching for any sign of deception. She didn't trust Bill as far as she could throw him, which, considering he was a floating triangle, wasn't very far.

Bill's eye flicked toward her, lingering for just a moment, before shifting back to Dipper. The motion was almost dismissive, as if he found Mabel's question unworthy of a direct answer. His expression—or what passed for one in his singular eye—was a blend of amusement and condescension. "Now, now, why would I do that?" he replied, his tone light and airy, as if discussing the weather rather than a serious accusation. "Curses are such messy business," he continued, waving one of his thin, stick-like arms in a gesture of mock distaste. The casual boredom in his voice was grating, as though he were above such petty concerns.

But then, in an instant, his demeanor shifted. Bill floated closer to Dipper, his eye narrowing with an unsettling intensity. The playful façade melted away, replaced by a more menacing curiosity. He seemed to savor the tension in the air, feeding off the unease that radiated from the siblings. "Besides," he added, his voice dropping to a lower, more sinister tone, "I prefer my chaos a bit more... hands-on." The way he emphasized the last words sent a shiver down Mabel's spine, as if he were sharing a private joke that only he found funny.

Dipper stood his ground, not flinching under Bill's piercing gaze. His eyes were hard, filled with a mix of anger and suspicion. He wasn't buying Bill's casual demeanor for a second. Dipper's jaw tightened as he met Bill's gaze head-on, refusing to show any sign of intimidation. "Then why are you here?" he demanded, his voice firm and steady, cutting through the tension like a knife.

Bill seemed to consider Dipper's question, his gaze fixed on the boy with an intensity that was unsettling. And then something strange happened. Bill's ever-present smugness faltered, and his single eye widened slightly. It was a subtle shift, but enough to be noticeable. For a being like Bill Cipher, who thrived on chaos and unpredictability, any change in his demeanor was cause for concern. Mabel, usually more carefree and oblivious to serious situations, felt a cold prickle of unease. She glanced at her brother, then back at the demon, trying to gauge what was happening.

Bill remained silent, his gaze locked onto Dipper with an unreadable expression. The silence was unnerving, stretching on for a few heartbeats too long. Mabel leaned closer to her brother, her voice barely above a whisper. "Did we break him?" she murmured, half-joking but unable to hide the nervous edge in her tone.

Dipper tore his eyes away from Bill to glance at Mabel, then back at the demon. The uncertainty in his own voice was clear as he demanded, "What are you staring at?" The question was blunt, but tinged with a hint of confusion and unease. He wasn't used to seeing Bill so... unsettled.

For a moment, it seemed like Bill might not respond. The air was thick with anticipation, the weight of the unknown pressing down on them. Then, almost imperceptibly, Bill's demeanor shifted. The mischievous glint in his eye softened, and his usual air of malicious glee was subdued. It was a subtle but significant change, as if some of the edge had been taken off his usual malevolence.

"Just... noticing something interesting," Bill said, his voice less taunting than usual. The words were cryptic, offering no real explanation, but they carried a strange undercurrent of curiosity. Finally, he backed off, floating a little further away, his eye still lingering on Dipper with an expression that was hard to decipher. It was as if he had seen something in the boy that had caught him off guard.

Mabel raised an eyebrow. That was...odd.

From that moment on, Bill's behavior shifted in a way that was both subtle and unsettling. He remained his usual snarky and taunting self, throwing out sarcastic remarks and mocking comments at every opportunity. But there was a strange, almost imperceptible change in his demeanor. The sharp edge of his taunts seemed blunted, and his playful malice lacked its usual bite. Most notably, he stayed unusually close to Dipper, almost as if he were deliberately placing himself nearby.

It wasn't in the typical antagonistic way Bill usually behaved—hovering menacingly or taunting them from a distance. Instead, there was an odd protectiveness to his actions. It was subtle, but Mabel began to notice the way Bill would position himself between Dipper and any potential threat in the mindscape. Whether it was a particularly aggressive manifestation of Mrs. Henderson's fears or some of her particularly more disturbing memories, Bill seemed to instinctively move to shield Dipper, even if only slightly.

Mabel watched these interactions with a mix of confusion and wariness. The demon's behavior was baffling, and it made her uneasy. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more going on beneath the surface, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Bill's actions were inconsistent with his usual chaotic nature, and the apparent protectiveness he displayed toward Dipper was downright bizarre.

Dipper, for his part, looked incredibly uncomfortable. He kept glancing at Bill with narrowed eyes, his suspicion evident. It was clear he was expecting the demon to pull some kind of trick, to turn on them when they least expected it. The tension between them was palpable, an undercurrent of distrust that colored every interaction. Yet, despite Dipper's obvious discomfort and wariness, Bill continued to act strangely cooperative.

Instead of throwing up obstacles or leading them into traps, Bill offered guidance through the mindscape. He pointed out hidden dangers and suggested safer paths, his tone unusually straightforward. There were no riddles or convoluted games, just practical advice that helped them navigate the treacherous terrain. It was as if Bill had set aside his usual penchant for chaos in favor of genuinely assisting them, a change that left Dipper and Mabel both relieved and wary.

The mindscape itself was a dangerous and unpredictable place, with every twist and turn potentially hiding new dangers. Yet, with Bill's help, they managed to avoid the worst of it. Still, the tension hung in the air, unspoken but ever-present. Mabel couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to Bill's actions, something they weren't seeing. And Dipper, despite Bill's uncharacteristic helpfulness, remained on edge, ready for the other shoe to drop.

Mabel, with her hopelessly romantic outlook on life, couldn't help but sense that there was something deeper in Bill's interactions with Dipper. Her gaze lingered on the demon as he hovered near her brother, a curious blend of fascination and confusion in her eyes. As the three moved through the ever-shifting landscape of Mrs. Henderson's mind, Bill frequently cast sidelong glances at Dipper. These glances were fleeting but significant, filled with a complex mixture of emotions that Mabel struggled to interpret. There was a softness in the way Bill's eye lingered on Dipper, a marked contrast to the usual taunting gaze that she had come to expect.

The air between them was charged with a different kind of tension, one that felt less antagonistic and more... personal. It was a tension that was almost palpable, vibrating through the distorted, dreamlike landscape around them. The usual antagonism that accompanied Bill’s presence was muted, replaced by an undercurrent of something that felt oddly intimate.

As they ventured deeper into the labyrinthine corridors of Mrs. Henderson's mindscape, the surroundings grew increasingly chaotic and twisted. The once overall surreal landscape gave way to a more focused and intense disturbance—a dark, swirling vortex of negative energy that pulsed with an ominous rhythm. The vortex was a swirling maelstrom of shadowy tendrils and swirling darkness, its core emitting a low, throbbing hum that resonated through the very fabric of the mindscape.

The air around the vortex was thick with an oppressive weight, pressing down on them and making it difficult to breathe. The swirling shadows seemed to reach out, as if attempting to draw in any nearby intruders. Dipper’s face was set in a mask of determination and concentration as he approached the vortex, pulling out his journal with practiced ease. The familiar leather-bound book, covered in mysterious symbols and cryptic notes, was his constant companion in these strange and dangerous situations. He flipped through its pages rapidly, eyes scanning for any information that might help him understand and counteract the dark energy emanating from the vortex.

Dipper's hands moved deftly as he compared the vortex’s features to the detailed illustrations and notes in the journal. He muttere d to himself, piecing together the clues and formulating a plan to neutralize the curse. His brow furrowed with focus, and the determination in his eyes was palpable as he worked to decipher the complex nature of the malevolent force before him.

Meanwhile, Bill hovered nearby, his presence a strange contrast to the chaotic energy of the vortex. The demon's usual amusement was absent, replaced by an expression that Mabel couldn’t quite decipher. For a brief moment, as he floated with his ever-watchful eye fixed on Dipper, there was a flicker of something that almost resembled... fondness? It was an odd and fleeting expression, one that didn’t align with the demon’s usual demeanor.

No, that couldn’t be right. Bill Cipher was known for his cruel games and chaotic nature. Fondness was a foreign concept to him. Yet, despite her instinctive skepticism, Mabel couldn’t ignore the peculiar shift in Bill’s behavior. The moment was brief, but it left a lingering impression on Mabel.

Dipper frowned deeply as he scrutinized the swirling vortex of negative energy. He leaned closer, his face illuminated by the faint glow of the vortex and the soft light of his journal. His fingers traced over the pages, searching for relevant notes and illustrations that could offer clues about how to handle the dark force before him.

"This curse is tied to deep-seated fears and anxieties," Dipper muttered, his voice quiet and almost absentminded as he flipped through the pages of his journal with urgency, comparing the vortex's chaotic patterns with his detailed notes on similar phenomena. His brows were knitted in concentration, and the shadows cast by the swirling darkness seemed to dance across his face as he spoke. "We need to find the root cause and unravel it," he added, more to himself than anyone else.

As Dipper worked, Bill Cipher floated closer, his usual carefree demeanor juxtaposed with a strangely inquisitive interest. The demon’s presence was almost intrusive as he leaned in to peer over Dipper's shoulder. "Ooh, sounds like a real party," Bill said with a laugh that echoed eerily within the mindscape, the sound bouncing off the warped, shifting surfaces of the dream realm. His voice, though still laced with its usual mockery, carried an unusual undertone. There was a hint of amusement, but it was softened by an unexpected quality—almost as if he were genuinely intrigued by Dipper’s thought process of figuring it out rather than merely enjoying the chaos.

What was most striking, however, was the odd softness in Bill’s gaze. Despite the mocking tone, his eye lingered on Dipper with a level of focus that seemed almost... attentive. The usual malevolent glimmer was replaced by something more subtle, a kind of interested curiosity that Mabel had never seen before.

Mabel couldn't shake the feeling that something significant had happened earlier when Bill went silent. She glanced between Bill and Dipper, her eyes narrowing in thought. What had changed? Why was Bill being so… weirdly supportive?

As Dipper continued his meticulous work, absorbed in deciphering the complexities of the vortex, Mabel's attention drifted to Bill. She observed the demon floating nearby, his single eye flicking towards her brother with an intensity that seemed out of place. Each time Dipper adjusted his position or made a new note, Bill’s gaze followed him with an almost magnetic focus. It was as if the demon was unable to look away, his eye lingering on Dipper with a peculiar intensity.

Then, suddenly, it hit her.

Mabel's eyes widened in astonishment as she put the pieces together. "Oh my gosh," she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible but filled with excitement. She slapped her hands to her cheeks in a dramatic gesture, her heart racing with the thrill of her revelation. The realization was so unexpected that she could barely contain her enthusiasm. "Bill has a crush on Dipper!" she murmured, her voice hushed but bubbling with delight.

Mabel’s mind raced with the implications of this new understanding. Everything fell into place—the demon’s unusual behavior, his apparent concern for Dipper, the way he kept her brother away from any potential dangers while staying close him. It all made sense now. The strange, almost tender quality in Bill’s gaze, his uncharacteristic cooperation, and his fascination with Dipper were pieces of a puzzle she hadn’t recognized until now.

The realization sent a thrilling jolt through Mabel. She could hardly believe it, but the evidence seemed undeniable. Her brother might actually have a chance at a summer romance, even if it was with a weird triangle demon!

As Dipper worked diligently, his concentration unwavering, he finally managed to stabilize the vortex. The once-menacing swirl of dark energy began to unravel, its ominous hum fading into silence. The chaotic maelstrom of shadows and twisted forms that had dominated Mrs. Henderson's mindscape slowly dissipated, retreating like a stormcloud lifting. The oppressive darkness lifted, revealing the more serene and familiar elements of Mrs. Henderson’s psyche. The swirling shapes and dark, amorphous shadows faded away, giving way to a landscape that, while still surreal, was now much more calm and coherent.

Dipper exhaled deeply, a sigh of relief escaping his lips as he wiped the sweat from his brow. The intense effort of stabilizing the vortex had left him exhausted, but the sight of the mindscape returning to a semblance of normalcy was a welcome reward for his hard work. His face, still flushed with exertion, softened as he took in the newly restored environment.

Bill, who had been uncharacteristically quiet throughout the ordeal, finally broke the silence. His voice, when he spoke, carried the familiar edge of his usual arrogance, though it was tinged with an odd, subdued quality. "Well, that was fun," he said, his tone laced with a sarcastic cheerfulness that contrasted with the serious nature of their task. "Guess this is where we part ways, Pine Tree," Bill continued, his voice still laced with its signature inflection, but lacking the usual bite.

Dipper, his expression a mixture of relief and wariness, frowned at the demon. "Yeah... thanks for the help, I guess," he replied, his tone betraying his lingering distrust. Despite Bill’s assistance, Dipper’s experience with the demon had made him cautious.

Bill chuckled softly, a sound that seemed to reverberate through the mindscape’s now tranquil atmosphere. He gave a flamboyant tip of his top hat, his gesture both theatrical and dismissive. "Anytime," he said, his voice carrying a playful yet detached quality. With a snap of his fingers, a burst of blue flames erupted around him, swirling and crackling with an otherworldly energy. The flames grew more intense, and within moments, Bill's form was engulfed, leaving behind a trail of flickering blue embers. As the last of the flames died out, Bill disappeared, leaving the mindscape and its inhabitants behind in a sudden and dramatic exit.

As the mindscape around them continued to stabilize, the once-chaotic environment now settling into a calm state, Mabel’s emotions were a whirlwind of excitement and anxiety. She watched as the twisted, dark shapes gradually faded away, giving way to a landscape that, while still a little strange, was now significantly less foreboding. The restoration of order was a relief, but her thoughts were occupied with the peculiar development between her brother and the enigmatic demon.

Mabel’s mind buzzed with the thrilling possibility that Dipper might actually have a romantic prospect, even if it came in the form of a bizarre and dangerous triangle demon. The idea of her brother potentially having a summer romance, however unconventional, sparked a flutter of excitement in her. It was an enticing and amusing thought, and the prospect of a strange love story unfolding was like a new and intriguing plot twist in her favorite novel.

However, alongside this thrill was a gnawing worry. Bill Cipher was not just any ordinary being—he was a formidable and unpredictable demon with a reputation for causing chaos and harm. The thought of him becoming close to Dipper, with all the potential dangers that implied, was both worrying and deeply unsettling. Mabel couldn’t shake the concern that, despite Bill’s unusual behavior, the demon’s inherent danger could put her brother at risk.

As they made their way back to the real world, Mabel’s playful nature bubbled to the surface. She seized the opportunity to tease her brother, her grin widening as she glanced at him with mischief in her eyes. “So, Dipper,” she began, her voice light and teasing, “you and Bill seemed pretty close back there.”

Dipper’s reaction was immediate. His eyes widened in surprise, and a faint blush began to spread across his cheeks, turning them a rosy shade of red. His usual composure faltered as he stammered, “What? No way! He’s just... weird.” The flustered look on his face was both endearing and amusing to Mabel. His attempt to downplay the situation was clear, but it did little to conceal his embarrassment or the fact that he was caught off guard by her playful remark.

Mabel couldn’t contain her amusement as she watched Dipper’s reaction unfold. Her laughter bubbled up, light and infectious, as she took in the sight of her brother’s deepening blush and flustered demeanor. She leaned in closer, her eyes twinkling with playful mischief. “Sure, sure,” she said with a teasing lilt in her voice. “But did you notice how super cooperative he was? It’s almost like he... likes you.” With a dramatic flourish, Mabel waggled her eyebrows suggestively, her grin widening into a full-fledged mischievous smile. She playfully poked Dipper’s side, her fingers digging into his ribs with a gentle, teasing pressure.

Dipper’s reaction was immediate and vivid. His face flushed a deeper shade of crimson, a color that contrasted sharply with his usually pale complexion. He averted his gaze, his eyes darting away from Mabel’s gleeful expression, clearly uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. “Mabel, don’t be ridiculous,” Dipper managed to stammer, his voice a mix of frustration and genuine discomfort. “Bill’s a demon. He doesn’t have feelings.” The way he spoke was laced with a desperate attempt to rationalize the situation, to push aside the absurd yet intriguing possibility that Mabel was suggesting.

But Mabel wasn’t convinced. Her mind replayed the recent moments in vivid detail, the memory of Bill’s gaze lingering in her thoughts. She recalled how the demon’s single eye had softened, a subtle but unmistakable shift from his usual malevolent glare. It had been a fleeting expression, almost imperceptible, but it was there—an intensity of focus that seemed to transcend the usual dynamics of their encounters. There was something there, she was sure of it. And despite the surreal and unsettling nature of having a demon possibly harboring feelings for her brother, there was something undeniably... sweet about it.

As they made their way back to the Mystery Shack, Mabel’s steps were lighter, her mood buoyed by an almost tangible sense of excitement. The surreal and intense experience of the mindscape adventure had left her feeling giddy, her mind swirling with the implications of what she had just witnessed. The prospect that Dipper might have found his first crush, albeit an unconventional one, filled her with a bubbling anticipation.

Who knew? Maybe even demons could have soulmates. And maybe, just maybe, Bill Cipher had found his in Dipper Pines.

this was actually originally going to be from dipper’s perspective but i had more ideas for mabel’s perspective… plus dippers pov would’ve been boring (¬_¬")
