Work Text:

Mizuki is coming out to Ena right now.

She's opening up, Ena promised she'd wait as long as Mizuki would need, and she trusted her, and now the amalgamation of that trust resulted in her confiding.

She's telling her about her childhood, more about her older sister, the rest of her family, how she's pretty much always craved to be a girl only to push that down for half her life, choosing to live as herself by the time she entered high school anyway. Everything before and since then.

It's so very vulnerable, Ena almost thought she'd never see the day where Mizuki would speak to her through a small, quivering voice, as if she's sure of what she's doing but so, so fragile despite that.

Ena has so much power here. And her mind drifts away.

She's the first person Mizuki has told.

She's the first person Mizuki decided to tell, and she has to restrain herself to not let a satisfied little giggle fall out.

She's trustworthy! She might've been a bit pushy, probably too nosy, and parts of her wish she had been kinder to Mizuki so this would've happened way earlier, but still! Ena is trustworthy. And that definitely makes her one of Mizuki's closest friends by default.

She wonders. Other people besides her know, they have to.

If only because of the rumors that have been circulating about Mizuki for who knows how long.

Ena's always heard them, she just couldn't tell who they were talking about. She never found it in her to care, either.

But she knows, and they were wrong, they still are. Ena knows the real honest truth and they don't.

Still.

Ena's met plenty of Mizuki's friends over the past year, they have to know. If only because they've witnessed her social transition, or because of the rumors but getting to make their own assessment of her, or because they're just smarter than Ena and figured it out on their own while she couldn't be assed to even take a wild guess that Mizuki might be trans.

Or because Mizuki told them herself.

Sour, now Ena's resisting tearing her own hair out her scalp.

Why the hell would Mizuki even tell anyone else when Ena was right there, having made a promise to her? Did it mean nothing? Did she perceive them as empty words?

Were they?

She doesn't know, Ena doesn't know if Mizuki actually verbally told anyone besides her.

Is she the last dumbass to find out? Is Mizuki struggling to tell her because literally everyone else knows?

Do the rest of Niigo know? Does Miku and the others in the Sekai? Have they just been keeping this all from her as if she was unworthy of knowing?

All along?

Mizuki calls out her name, eyes wet and face full of anxious apprehension. She's so scared and it's all Ena's fault.

Ena has so much power here, and she forces herself to come back.

She breathes in. She lays a gentle hand upon Mizuki's own, aiming for comfort. She smiles while making eye contact.

Ena is trustworthy.

"Thank you, for trusting me with all this."

And Mizuki's tears fall, looking like a weight has been lifted off her shoulders.

Ena will celebrate her personal little victory later, on top of her own pedestal. And then, she'll fall from it, podium so tall she'll likely break most of the bones in her body.

But that's a metaphor, and what she'll break will only be art supplies while she throws them around her room. Her phone's screen might gain a few new cracks too.

This is about Mizuki, keep the spotlight on Mizuki.

She breathes out.
