Work Text:

Here I stand today, in defiance of an inevitable death.

I plant my feet firmly on the ground, taking a deep breath as I gaze up at the dark, foreboding clouds blanketing the sky. They cast an ominous shade of sorrow onto the landscape, as if the world itself mourns for what it has lost. The air is moist, the cool breeze gently brushes against my skin, sending goosebumps across my body, yet none of it stirs me. It’s silent—not a single sound of life echoes through the desolate wasteland once called home by so many.

I can’t help but feel the weight of those memories pressing against my chest. There was a time when this place was alive, filled with the vibrant sounds of life. I close my eyes, and I can almost hear it—the distant chatter, the hum of laughter that once filled the streets, the warmth of the sun, radiant and comforting, soaking into my skin. I remember the blue skies, the way the light danced across the grass as the wind rippled through it like an ocean of green. Even the smallest things—like the insects I barely noticed, the wild animals roaming the mountains—were part of a harmony that now feels like a distant dream.

I can’t help but see those days in sharp contrast to the bleak present. The city once stood proud with towering buildings, vehicles bustling along the roads as people went on with their lives, carefree, smiling, and unaware of the dark future that awaited them. Families together, friends walking hand in hand, couples finding comfort in each other’s presence. All of it… gone. All of them… gone.

I can still see their faces—the faces of people I loved, the ones I failed to protect. I keep their memories alive, but it’s like holding sand in my hands. The harder I try to grasp them, the more they slip away, leaving behind nothing but a hollow ache.

This place—this wasteland—it’s more than just ruined buildings and barren earth. It’s the grave of everyone I ever knew. Every step I take feels like I’m walking over their ashes. Every breath reminds me that I’m still here, and they’re not.

And yet, despite the overwhelming sorrow, I stand. Because I have to.

There’s a fire deep inside me that refuses to be extinguished.

It was sharp—a freezing stare that pierced through me like an icy dagger, sending shivers down my spine. That gaze… so cold, so void of any humanity, it felt like staring into the abyss itself. My adversaries loomed greatly over me, their soulless form casting shadows that swallowed the broken ground beneath me. Their eyes—those dead, empty eyes—locked onto me, not with hatred, not even with anger, but with something far worse. Entertainment. I was nothing to them. An insignificant insect, a mere inconvenience in their path of destruction.

My heart pounded in my chest, not with fear, but with rage. Rage at the thought that these monsters, these soulless automatons, were the reason for all of it—the death, the chaos, the endless ruin that stretched as far as the eye could see. They had stripped the world of its life, its beauty, leaving nothing but despair in their wake. And yet, they stood there, wearing those demented, twisted smirks, as if it was all some grand joke. As if everything—every life they had snuffed out, every family they had torn apart, every scream of agony they had caused—was nothing more than entertainment for them.

I could feel the heat of my anger rising, burning through the numbness that had settled into my bones. My fists clenched so tight, my knuckles turned white, nails digging into my palms until I felt the sting of blood. But I welcomed the pain. It reminded me that I was still here. That I still had a pulse, a fire inside me that refused to die, no matter how hard they tried to snuff it out.

I was their next plaything. I knew that. It had been that way since the beginning—this sick, twisted game they played, keeping me alive just to toy with me, to draw out my suffering for their amusement. They were gods in their own eyes, and I was nothing more than a toy in their game, kept around for the occasional thrill, the small burst of amusement on their otherwise boring days.

But today… today, it ends.

No more games. No more running. No more waiting for someone else to get hurt. This is it. This moment, right now, is all I have left. I can feel the weight of it pressing down on my shoulders—the enormity of the battle ahead, the knowledge that I may not walk away from this. But even so, I refuse to bow.

I'll face them, every last one of them, with everything I have. With everything on the line.

With my life on the line.

I will fall today, I want it to mean something. I want it to be remembered—not as the day I was defeated, but as the day I stood in defiance, even in the face of certain death.

My life, my pain, my anger, all of it is meaningless to them. But to me? To me, it’s everything. It’s all I have left.

And I’ll make sure they feel every ounce of it.

The sky began to weep. Heavy, unrelenting rain poured down from the heavens as if the world itself already knew the outcome of this battle, mourning the loss of another one of her precious children before it even happened. Each drop fell with a weight that I could feel deep in my bones, like the Earth was trying to warn me, trying to beg me to stop—to run, to flee from the impending doom. But I stood firm. The soil softened and turned to mud beneath me. It clung to my boots, weighing me down, as the cold rain soaked through my clothes, drenching me to the core, sending chills through my body.

It was almost as if nature itself was trying to push me back, as if it wanted to wash me away from this place before the inevitable happened. But I ignored it. I ignored the cold that seeped into my skin, the mud that threatened to swallow my feet whole, and the wind that lashed against me, howling as if it, too, was screaming for me to turn back. To give in.

But there’s no turning back. Not anymore.

I will stand, no matter the cost.

Each raindrop that struck my face felt like a slap, sharp and stinging, but it couldn’t compare to the battle raging inside me. The fight to keep moving, to keep standing, even as fear gripped my heart with icy fingers. Yes, I am afraid. Terrified, in fact. My entire body is trembling—not from the cold, but from the weight of everything that rests on my shoulders. But this fear… it isn’t for me.

I’ve already made peace with my fate. I’ve prepared myself for the end, accepted that this will be my last stand. But the fear I feel—it’s for them. My family. My friends. My young apprentice, with all the potential in the world, who still looks up to me, expecting me to come home. My mother, who has already lost so much, yet still puts her faith in me. But above all… it’s my wife and daughter. My heart clenches painfully at the thought of them.

My Videl. My Pan.

I see their faces flash before my eyes, bright and vivid even through the downpour, and it nearly brings me to my knees. My infant daughter, still so small, so fragile. She doesn’t even know what’s happening, doesn’t understand why I’ve had to leave. She doesn’t know what’s at stake, what I’m risking. But Videl… she knows. She understands.

I can almost feel her presence with me now, the way she always stood by my side, unafraid, fierce and determined. I can hear her voice in my head, telling me to fight, to come back to them. Telling me that she’s strong, that she can handle it. But I know her. I know the pain she’s hiding behind those words. She knows the inevitable outcome of this evening.

And that’s what terrifies me the most.

I force myself to straighten, standing tall against the downpour, my body shaking not from weakness, but from the fire inside me. My fear, my love for them, my desperate need to protect them—it all fuels me. It makes me stronger.

Because I’m all that’s left. I’m the only thing between them and the future. A future where Pan can grow up in peace, where she can laugh and play without knowing the horrors of this world. A future where Videl won’t have to carry the weight of grief on her shoulders. Where my friends, my family… they can all live the lives they deserve.

I take a deep breath, the rain running down my face like tears, but my resolve is unwavering. Just as my father and his friends did before me, I will face the impossible. I will stand against these odds that seem insurmountable. I will be that never-yielding beacon of hope, the one light in the darkness, no matter how dim it may seem.

I lift my gaze toward the horizon, toward the soulless machinations waiting for me, their forms barely visible through the sheets of rain. I know they’re watching. Waiting to strike and have their fill of entertainment. But I’ll make them see that I’m not so easily broken.

There is still a future. There has to be. And I will fight for it with everything I have left.

As the battle began, the world around me became a blur of motion and violence. The sound of fists colliding, the crackle of energy splitting the air, the ground beneath me trembling with each clash—it all merged into a chaotic symphony of war. I traded blow for blow with my adversaries, each strike pushing my body further beyond its limits. The sharp, stinging pain of their attacks tore through me, each one a reminder of how fragile this moment was, how close I was to the edge. Yet, I refused to let them break me.

My will… it’s strong. Stronger than I ever imagined it could be. It’s one of the few things I still have—unrelenting, unwavering, a force that drives me forward even when my body screams for release. But my body… my body is broken. Exhausted. Every muscle burns as if it’s been set on fire, every joint feels like it’s grinding against bone. My legs, trembling beneath me, threaten to give way at any second, but I must not falter. Not now.

Not when there’s so much left to fight for.

I grit my teeth, pushing through the agony, my fists tightening with every strike I land. I can feel the weight of each blow reverberate through my shattered body, feel my bones rattle and strain with clash I take. But as long as I can stand… as long as I can move… as long as I can draw breath… I will fight. I have to. For the hopes and dreams of so many, for the future that still waits, untouched, on the other side of this hellish storm.

For my own selfish reasons, too.

For Videl. For Pan.

The thought of them fills my mind, a warmth amidst the freezing storm of battle. I see Videl’s face, her fiery spirit and that unbreakable strength that’s always been there, even when I doubted myself. Her laughter, her smile—so full of life, so fierce and beautiful. She believed in me when I couldn’t even believe in myself. How many times did she pull me from the brink? How many times did her presence remind me of what I was fighting for, of the promises we made to one another? We promised to protect our future. Our daughter.

Pan… My sweet, innocent Pan. I can almost feel her tiny fingers gripping mine, those innocent giggles echoing in my ears like the softest of melodies. Her smile, her laughter—they play on a loop in my mind as the battle rages on around me, a constant reminder of what’s at stake. I wanted to teach you so much, Pan. I wanted to watch you grow up, to be there for every step you took, to guide you, protect you, be the father you deserve.

But as the battle drags on, the weight of it all presses harder and harder against me. My strength is fading, like the dying embers of a once-raging fire. Every blow against my body feels heavier, more crushing than the last. I can feel the energy draining from my limbs, the fatigue crawling up my spine like death’s bony fingers, gripping tighter and tighter. My muscles burn with every movement, every punch, every dodge, until it feels like they’re tearing apart. My bones ache so deeply it feels as if they’ll shatter at any moment.

And then, something shifts.

I no longer feel my body. The pain, the burning—it all fades into nothingness. My vision blurs. The edges of my world become soft, fading, as if I’m drifting away from everything. Darkness presses in from all sides, heavy and suffocating, but I don’t resist it. Not anymore. My body, broken and battered, is beyond saving. My strength has long since left me, the warmth I held onto slipping through my fingers like grains of sand. But in the darkness, there’s warmth. An overwhelming, soothing warmth that wraps itself around me, pulling me in like a soft embrace.

Is this it?

This is as far as I can go. I’ve given everything. Pushed beyond every limit I thought I had. And yet, here I am, my body finally giving out under the weight of it all. My knees buckle, the ground rushing up to meet me as my legs fail, the strength in my arms abandoning me. I was not strong enough. I never was. I was naive to think I could face them alone, to think that I could stand against this force on my own.

It was you who gave me strength.

Videl… Pan…

The thought of seeing you again, of holding you in my arms, of coming home to the family we dreamed of—that’s what carried me this far. It’s what pushed me beyond my limits, what kept me fighting when I had nothing left. But now… now I can feel it slipping away. The warmth of your memory, the future I fought so hard to protect, it’s fading from my grasp.

The rain pouring down on me like the tears of the Earth itself. The world knows. It knows that this battle, this sacrifice, will be my last. It mourns for me, for the life I couldn’t live, for the love I’ll never get to see again. But I don’t regret it. Not for a second.

In the face of it all, I force myself to smile.

For their future.

Videl… I wanted to see you once more. I wanted to see your beauty, to hear your voice again, to feel the warmth of your embrace. I long to run my fingers through your hair, to feel your heartbeat against mine, to hold you tightly and tell you how much I love you.

I wanted to see our daughter, Pan. I wanted to watch her take her first steps, to be there when she says her first words. I wanted to hold her close, to feel her tiny hand in mine, to teach her about the world and protect her from all the dangers that lie ahead. I wanted to be the father she deserved, to be the man who would never let anything harm her.

I wanted so much… so much more time.

But time has slipped away from me. Here, at the edge of my life, I realize that I won’t get to see those moments. I won’t get to see Pan grow up, won’t get to hear her laughter echoing through our home. I won’t get to share those peaceful days with Videl, the simple joys of being a husband and father. Those dreams are slipping away, lost to the darkness that surrounds me.

Yet… I smile.

Because I know that even though I won’t be there to witness it, even though I won’t be there to protect them, my spirit will always be with them. My love will always be with them. It’s etched into the very fabric of my being, woven into the future I fought so hard to protect. I fought so they could live. I fought so that Videl could wake up tomorrow and see the sun rise over a world free from fear. I fought so that Pan could grow up in a world where peace wasn’t just a fleeting dream, but a reality.

I smile because I know that my love, my spirit, will guide them. It will protect them, even when I’m gone.

The rain pours down around me, drenching me to the bone, but it no longer matters. The cold no longer reaches me. My body has become numb, and the world has grown distant. I can no longer feel the earth beneath me, can no longer hear the sounds of the battle. It’s all fading into silence.

And yet, even in this silence, even in the face of death, I smile.

This is the path I chose. This is the fight I accepted. For their future… for their peace… I stood here today.

I wanted to live, to be there for them, but if this is the price to pay for their tomorrow, I will gladly pay it a thousand times over.

As the darkness closes in around me, I feel warmth—Videl… Pan... I wanted to hold both of you tightly and spend my days as a husband and a father in peace. I can see their faces in my mind, so clear, so vivid. I feel a tear slip down my cheek, though I no longer have the strength to wipe it away.

My vision narrows to a single point of light, dimming with each passing breath. My heart slows, and my body grows impossibly heavy.

I have no regrets.

I have no fear. No hesitation.

For their future, I fought.

For their future, I will fall..

Yet here I stood today, in defiance of an inevitable death.

For a future that I will never bear witness to.
