Work Text:
It’s been one month since the end of the world and one month since the monarchs came to claim everything as their own. It’s also been a few hours since meeting a few others outside of a train station… which he had picked for his location at the end of the world.
Probably, his memory hasn’t been the best for a while.
He should check it out.
Really he should.
“You’re Mr. Mole correct?”
Mole looked over to the cube on the ground… CG right? It was rather… odd seeing such a thing talking and walking around. Never seen anything like it before but then again, he hasn’t really seen much. Well that he can remember that is. But that still counts to some degree right?
Right?
“Uh, yeah,” He mutters, he can feel Blu or whatever staring at him through the mask. It’s weird, it's creepy, however it’s not as bad as the monarch. It's not as bad knowing that Blu wouldn’t kill him. If he wanted to he would’ve just left him with the monarch, not that the monarch would’ve killed him. He thinks, maybe.
He’s uncertain.
Now the monarch might kill him, he doesn’t know. Doesn’t know much really.
Doesn’t know.
“What were you doing at the train station?” The girl piped up, Lucy if he remembers correctly. He vaguely remembers Blu mentioning it earlier. He might be wrong though… that would be embarrassing.
“I was uh…” What was he doing there? He woke up there. “Fixing the trains,” He muttered, Blu scoffed at him, he felt a sudden weight on his shoulder as the other was clearly leaning on him.
“More like crashing them,” he said sarcastically.
“Well they don’t usually- that doesn’t usually- happen,” He stammered, he doesn’t know these people. He doesn’t really he truly doesn’t know them and it’s fucking freaky.
“Happened today,” Blu remarked, there was a tone underneath the words, accusatory. He deserves it, he really does. Mole bit his tongue and looked away, back towards the ground in embarrassment. Blu wasn’t wrong per se, the train did decide to start up randomly and it did crash almost hitting Lucy… god he sucked at this. The one thing he could remember and he couldn’t even do that right.
“I don’t know why the train started up- must’ve… I don’t know,” Mole muttered.
There was a brief moment of silence before Blu huffed. “And you were fixing the trains,” he said smugly.
Mole looked back at him for a moment and they just stared at each other, he knew that under the mask Blu was smiling, because of course he was. Why wouldn’t he be? Out of everyone he could’ve met down there they couldn’t just leave him alone and they also hated him. Or at least Blu did, Lucy didn’t seem to mind though and CG didn’t seem to want him to die so…
Blu.
It was just Blu.
Just his fucking luck, get stuck with a shadow monster and now get stuck with a man in a gas masks who hates him for a… yeah a pretty reasonable reason.
“Yeah I was… fixing the trains,” Mole replied back, he was still confused about a lot of things. A lot of things.
“Alright, well we should go to bed. Come on now,” Blu huffed, walking over to Lucy and helping her put out the fire before laying down on his back beside and and glancing over to Mole. “What do you plan on staying up the whole night, eyebags?” Blu said and Mole took that as a sign he needed to lay down…
Probably.
Apparently it was the right choice since the moment he did Blu looked significantly less bothered about his overall existence which was always a good thing. He didn’t sleep though, he tried and he tried but he couldn’t fall asleep, so he settled on staring at the night sky instead. It was a little hard to see the stars through the rather reddish looking sky but it was comforting in some sense.
Time passed by for a while, just staring up at the stars and he didn’t know how long it was until he heard something in the distance and sat up squinting into the darkness. It was a little hard to see and actually… well he couldn’t see what made the sound at all so maybe it was just plain old hard to see.
It made the sound again and this time Blu sat up and looked at Lucy first then to Mole, and then finally the sound. They waited like that for a while until it happened again, it sounded like sticks breaking and while it could be another person he wasn’t really hoping for it. After all these three seemed like they were gonna be enough to deal with already…
“Come on,” Blu whispered, getting up, and Mole followed with him. “Let’s go check out what the hell is going on here,” he muttered, he glanced back at Lucy for a moment before turning to Mole again. “Don’t let her out of your sight,” he hissed, pointing to Lucy before dragging him away from her.
Didn’t that defeat the purpose? Oh well, guess he could figure it out later.
As they walked into the woods Mole made sure to keep Lucy in some line of sight, although it was getting harder and harder he still managed to keep up with it. They reached a deeper part of the woods when the sound was heard again and this time they saw the cause of it. It was a little animal. A squirrel of some kind running around and breaking sticks as it did so. Blu sighed in relief and looked back to Mole.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” He said, placing his hands on his hips and cocking his head towards him.
“Y-yeah I just,” Mole looked at the ground again, why did everything feel so far away? Why did it feel like he couldn’t touch anything anymore? He breathed slowly, in and out before looking at Blu. “I can’t think straight right now, sorry,” He apologized. What was he apologizing for?
What was he even doing here? He should be somewhere else right? He doesn’t know this place. He looked back at Blu who was now closer to him, hands hovering over his shoulders as if waiting to see if he could touch him.
“You good there?” Blu asked, for once his voice didn’t sound so demeaning.
Mole nodded. “Yeah I just- can’t exactly… remember anything, sorry,”
Blu nodded and Mole looked towards Blu’s hand before back at him and nodding a little and then Blu set his hand on his shoulder and began walking him back. “Don’t worry about it, weird things have been happening. I'm sure that you’ll get your memory back soon enough,” Blu hummed.
“Yeah I… I hope so,”
They sat down and Mole watched as Blu was right beside Lucy staring at her for a long while before looking back at him, it was hard to tell if he was really focussed on him though, every now and then he thinks that he might be looking back at Lucy through the mask.
“Are you good now?” Blu asked, he tilted his head slightly and Mole felt his face begin to burn with embarrassment. Blu probably hated him even more now, he hates himself now so it’s only fair really. He hates that he can’t remember who he is, because there has to be more to him than just… trains.
“Yeah just…” he looked at Blu. “A little shaken up I guess,”
“Well then, are you gonna go back to sleep?”
“Probably not,”
Blu laughed a little. “Yeah, me neither. So we’re just waiting for this one to get up then?” He pointed towards Lucy and Mole nodded, following his finger towards the girl.
“Yeah I… I guess we are,”
“Good, well then. Tell me more about yourself Mole,”
“I don’t remember a lot about myself,”
“Eh, let’s try anyways,”
Mole watched as Blu turned his head towards Lucy once more, keeping it focussed on her. He seemed protective over her, almost like an older brother in a sense.
“Okay… I think I can do that,”
He couldn’t tell if Blu was looking at him now, but he could feel it, the sudden change in his gaze as he nodded at Mole’s words.
“Good, that’s good,”
