Work Text:
“Don’t you ever get lonely?”
Gojo turned over to Megumi, who was sitting at the table. Pencil in hand and writing something down on it. It seemed like he was doing homework, god he was glad that he didn’t have to do any of that any more. Megumi stopped writing though and instead focussed more on him.
“What do you mean by that?” Gojo asked lazily from the living room, he kicked his feet up on the table and watched as Megumi scowled at the action, he knew that it would make him mad. That’s why he did it though.
“I mean you’re here all of the time, I was just wondering if you ever got lonely or something, like y’know. When you’re not here,” Megumi answered before looking back at his paper, Gojo saw the way that his cheeks flushed a little with embarrassment at his own question.
If only he knew.
“I’m never lonely Megumi, in fact,” he threw his head back on the couch, glancing over to the kid. “I have a ton of friends. Thousands really, you just have never met them before,” He turned around chin now resting on the headrest of the couch as he stared at the kid who scoffed at his words.
“I doubt that, there’s not enough crazy people in the world for that,”
“Ouch! Megumi that hurts, don't you know?” Gojo stood up, getting off of the couch and walking beside Megumi, looking over his shoulder and seeing what he was doing. Yep , homework. He ruffled his hair a little and the younger kid swatted his hand away.
“Shut up, you’re not that hurt,” Megumi huffed at him. He turned away from his homework to cross his arms at Gojo and pout. It was times like this when he forgot whose kid this even was in the first place.
He was so different from Toji. So much smaller too, he probably had to thank whoever Toji fucked for that, if the kid was him build for build then he probably would’ve hollow purpled the little rascal by now.
“I am though, Megumi, can't you see my tears?” Gojo laughed, bringing Megumi into a hug as the other whined and cried out at the touch, yet he never let up, leaving the other scrambling in his arms like a stray kitten.
Once he finally let go he watched as Megumi blinked hard a few times before turning his head to him and sticking his tongue out. “Whatever! Just go back to… whatever you were doing,” he muttered.
Gojo laughed and ruffled his hair one more time for good measure before walking back over to the couch and sitting down on it, scrolling through his phone as he looked through the messages of him and Shoko, and hell sometimes even Nanami would offer him a response every now and then.
Although he clicked out of that and eventually went to photos trying to find something to show Megumi to prove he had friends, he stopped just short after a few scrolls.
It was a picture of everyone together, Mei Mei and Utahime were in the back, Utahime yelling at him about something while Shoko was laughing with her making a motion as if to calm her down. Then Nanami and Haibara were in the frame drinking sodas as Nanami seemed to be shielding his face from the camera and then there was Gojo, taking the selfie with all of them together and the person next to him.
Geto.
He was smiling in the picture right next to him, hand held up as if about to hit him on the shoulder, he vaguely recalled the memory. He didn’t remember what they were doing though, every single moment just seemed to blur together when they were all with each other.
He remembered being so happy when they could all get together and just hang out. He remembered being so happy when it was just him, Shoko and Geto all hanging out together. On the train or in class.
Yet he can’t recall a single memory of it.
It keeps slipping from his mind, he can’t remember their conversations together or what they did together, and it wasn’t even that long ago. Sure he had certain memories but compared to the ones that he made they were few.
He sighed and clicked off his phone, staring at the window instead.
Maybe Megumi was right, he was lonely.
Nanami went off to get a ‘real job’, Shoko was busy all of the time now, treating sick sorcerers and when she wasn’t doing that she was resting. Utahime said that she wanted to get a job in teaching which was… well let’s just say those poor students. Mei Mei was… well if you wanted to get an audience with her you better have a shit ton of cash on you, and while Gojo does have that cash paying for someone to hang out with him is a little pathetic…
It’s very pathetic.
Haibara was… he doesn’t like to talk about it. He still remembers when he heard the news of his death, he remembers hating the Higher Ups that much more for sending him on a mission which was clearly way past his grade level. He also remembered Geto’s face, the way it seemed to dull further and further.
Geto.
Where to start, was there ever a start? When did it start was a way better question than anything. When did everything fall apart, when was it too late. When could he have talked him out of everything?
When did he get so lonely ?
Geto.
Everything seems to lead back to him doesn’t it? He laughs a little at the thought, still watching the window, he could see his reflection on it and–oh it was raining. How fitting, how fucking fitting.
Rain.
Fun.
“You’re moping,”
Gojo turned around and saw Megumi staring at him, eyes narrowed on him like some sort of target and–yeah, Toji’s son. He really needs to remember that.
“Stop it, you’re more annoying when you mope around,” Megumi huffed, pointing over to him with a small finger.
Gojo stared at him for a moment, oh yeah, Megumi is here too isn’t he? He looked at the kid longer and longer taking in more of his features. He really did look like Toji sometimes, right now though… he looked different right now. Maybe it was the annoyed expression on his face and the way that it twisted to try and hide his concern for him.
It failed.
“Oh, I forgot you’re here,” Gojo deadpanned and Megumi opened his mouth in shock.
“You’re at my house,” Megumi emphasized gesturing around the household. Gojo huffed a little, he wasn’t wrong but then again… he was paying for the house. Not Megumi, although he didn’t decide to mention that to him.
“Ah yes, I forgot I’m so sorry Megumi,” Gojo said teasingly, and watched as what little concern shifted in Megumi’s face into pure hatred and well… more hate really. It was quite funny to watch him decide whether or not to feel bad for him. He wants to save the kid the trouble and tell him that he shouldn’t but it’s fun, it’s nice.
Nice to feel someone care for him for once.
“You almost done with that?” Gojo asked, looking at his homework.
“I’m done,” Megumi said, his voice was proud. God he wished he was proud of dumb shit like that as a kid. Even after defeating his first grade one curse all he got was a cold stare from others.
“Alright then, why don’t we go to bed?” Gojo suggested getting up to take Megumi to his room but Megumi shook his head.
“I don’t wanna, I wanna watch TV. I don’t have school tomorrow,” Megumi reasoned and Gojo sighed, caving in instantly.
“Y’know what, fine. Come on, let’s watch something and then go to bed. Alright?” Gojo walked back over to the couch with Megumi and watched as Megumi flopped down on the couch beside him. Sitting up in the corner of it and grabbing the remote.
Gojo stared at the TV and smiled at what Megumi chose, it was a cartoon. He can’t remember the last time that he saw one of those.
He doesn’t know how long they stayed there but it was long enough for Megumi to end up falling asleep on Gojo’s shoulder somehow as the other wrapped a blanket around him.
Maybe he wasn’t so alone after all.
