Work Text:
In the mafia it was not uncommon for teenagers and children to appear in the hallways.
Whenever the opportunity arose, the mafia accepted teenagers and children with strong abilities as their workers.
No one knew where a child came from, with a terrifying power that only one person was capable of stopping.
But they knew where a fifteen-year-old child had come from: from an enemy organization.
And at first he had been the target of envious or curious looks.
At first he had been dismissed, it was said by the mafia, that Nakahara Chuuya was someone to avoid talking to.
First, because he had been once the mafia’s enemy.
And second….
Because either one would end up in a hospital bed or being victim of several curses.
And it was not pleasant at all.
So, as result Nakahara Chuuya got along with few people.
Those who were strong enough to enter his life.
One of them was a boy, a little older than him, whose name was … it’s not important.
Chuuya never really knew his name anyways.
And sometimes this boy and Chuuya would talk over glasses of wine and whiskey.
Chuuya had never asked the boy's name.
To be fair he never really cared about people’s names, even if they spent all their time together
And this Boy was no exception.
He had never been interested in the boy's name during the two years they ocasionally had drunk together.
It went like this.
Almost everytime.
As the boy entered the typical bar, - a nice and small place – Chuuya would turn his head towards him and would raise his eyebrows almost expressively.
“Oh, it's you”
The boy was then addressed as "you".
Because Chuuya never really asked his name.
And because the boy was just… a normal guy with no characteristics that facilitated his identification, he was just “you”.
Then the said boy would walk towards Chuuya taking the seat next to him.
The two teenagers would talk as if there was no tomorrow, but not before asking for a glass of their chosen poison.
Usually, Chuuya was in a good mood, having just successfully completed a mission or because he was naturally happy.
But after the last two years...…
To see a smile on Chuuya's lips was rarity.
And it was a shame because Chuuya had a beautiful laugh and smile.
It was an infectious laugh and a bright smile to behold.
But it was a smile and a laugh that hadn't been seen in about a year.
Both continued to meet of course.
And that’s when the boy had noticed that his smile was almost completely gone.
He never smiled nor laughed.
He usually was angry at everything and everyone, pushing everyone away with his bad mood.
It wasn't the Chuuya the boy had met that night.
This Chuuya came to the bar to take refuge, in a place with no one and with a glass of wine for company.
He would always chose the same table, away from everything and everyone.
And it was depressing to see someone so young sinking into unknown sorrows.
The light in his eyes had almost disappeared.
But he still continued to do everything perfectly, demonstrating how much he was worth to the mafia.
The boy, despite being somewhat worried, started to let Chuuya alone with his thoughts.
This decision had not lasted long, as the boy missed seeing that smile and laughter that brightened his nights.
So, he finally decided to talk to him.
And Chuuya, on his table and with a glass of wine on front of him, had simply raised his head very slowly, revealing heavy, tired eyes and the face of sorrow.
“Oh. It’s you.”
And the words had not been spoken with much enthusiasm, but the boy decided to keep him company anyway, sitting next to him.
And it’s that they had said anything, it had been more like a monologue than anything else.
The boy spoke and Chuuya listened, ocasionally humming in agreement.
It was obvious that Nakahara Chuuya had changed a lot, and it had not been for the better.
The boy felt the least he could do was to sit beside him, giving him that feeling that he was not alone.
Not anymore.
He wondered, after several weeks, if Chuuya had appreciated his gesture.
And also wondered if he had any friends, since he had been always alone.
However, when he asked him such, Chuuya had sighed, laughing in a painful way.
As if the question had been a total absurd joke.
“Oh those?” he paused briefly, sighing, "grabbing the base of the cup, lifting it up; then he said “They are gone.” with a blank expression.
Nothing more was said on the subject.
He never found out if Chuuya had thanked him for the gesture.
He never said anything.
Maybe the boy was just a person who kept another boy company at the bar.
They weren't even friends.
But still... Nakahara Chuuya was good company... or at least he had been good company.
Now he was less more like a zombie.
He thought about stopping seeing him.
Chuuya seemed to be more distant from the earth, being lost in silent thoughts, but then... then he ended up having some empathy for him.
He was a teenager.
A teenager with a dark story that he boy, long time ago, had given up on finding out out.
While he was eighteen, Chuuya was sixteen.
He had been on the mafia for two years and something happened to him and had taken all the light from him.
Chuuya seemed older than he actually was.
Those eyes were not supposed to belong to a teenager.
And he spoke with no hope or whatsoeve.
Almost as if there was no hope for the world.
Which was strange, because he was someone who worked hard for the mafia.
But when he was alone, his mask would crack.
He looked so alone, the loneliest creature in the world.
It was easy to forget that Chuuya was sixteen years old.
He was like a flower that had lost its life.
He wondered again if he had any friends, since he was always alone.
Constantly Alone.
And such doubt had until the day when, with the intention of keeping Chuuya company, he came across a second face.
That day, he had received a phone call from a colleague saying that there had been a weapons theft.
The place was still quite far away so it still had taken a few hours, only to find the missing cargo stored in another place.
He hadn’t blame his colleagues.
It could had happened to anyone.
But as result he had arrived too late and now Chuuya had someone by his side.
He took a look at the figure.
It was boy a little taller than Chuuya, with bandages on his face and wrists and a long black coat.
He widened his eyes in surprise.
It was without a doubt, the Port Mafia’s Black Wrath.
And if he said that he hadn't felt chills or he hadn't stood still like a statue, with the glass on his hand, as soon as he saw him…
Then he would be lying.
Dazai Osamu.
The terror of the Mafia.
The said “terror”, the best Port Mafia’s torturer torturer that was poking Chuuya's shoulder like a cat.
And he had something on his face that seemed to be a little smile.
And not the bad kind of smile.
Just… a little and funny smile.
And as usual, Chuuya’s head was on the tablet, using his arms as a pillow.
In front of him was a glass of wine.
He was probably quite drunk because he didn't move a muscle despite the other boy not stopping touching him.
Or maybe he was on the difficult mission of ignoring him.
Either way, the scene was strange.
And perhaps because it included the most terrifying mafia member acting like a… little kid and almost like a cat asking for attention.
The said cat was almost leaning over, on the side where Chuuya was, with his forearm on the table and the other elbow on the table to support his cheek.
He had an amused smile on his lips.
It was a… smile.
A smile.
A smile was rare.
It was something that was very rare in the mafia.
And it came from Dazai Osamu, of all people.
It was… strange.
And Chuuya was not moving, but the other didn't seem to be planning on leaving nor stopping any time soon.
The boy, with his drink on his hand, a few meters away blinked his eyes in confusion.
Dazai wouldn't leave Chuuya alone.
He continually poked his shoulder, his arm, touched his hair, over and over again.
And he didn't seem to mind the repetition.
He didn’t seem to be bored like the rumors said he was.
Incredible.
Then and unexpectedly, Dazai walked away with a blank expression.
He stared with his one eye at Chuuya for a few minutes, as if he was planning the other boy's death.
It was the expected from the Port Mafia’s Black Wrath, right?
But he was wrong.
A few seconds later, the said boy just held himself, yes literally held himself, onto Chuuya's shoulders and brought his hands down to his ribs.
His body was hunched over the back of the chair.
He didn’t seem to care about the looks he was receiving.
Not everyone from the bar was a mafioso, so some people were staring at Dazai like he was acting like a complete child.
And it was not that he wasn’t but…this was not a kid, it was Dazai Osamu.
Nevermind that he seemed to climb on Chuuya like a cat, that guy killed and tortured people in the worst way.
Or at least that was what the rumors said.
He never had seen it personally.
From a distance it was impossible to see what he was doing, but as Chuuya began to move uncomfortably, he deduced that Dazai was touching his ribs, tickling him.
The smile on Dazai's lips did not cease.
He never knew someone could smile so much, until he had seen Dazai Osamu poking Nakahara Chuuya.
Underneath the table, it was possible to see the distal kick that Chuuya gave to Dazai, who just dodged to the side continuing to torture the other with tickles.
And admittedly, the young man had been standing there for about five minutes waiting for one of the two to surrender.
Either Dazai would leave or Chuuya would kick him out.
He was curious, so sue him.
But none of that happened, instead, between kicks and giggles from Dazai, Chuuya ended up surrendering, starting to writhe.
He raised his head laughing loudly, because Dazai was tickling him nonstop.
He looked victorious and absolutely delighted.
“Stop… stop…st-stop…” even though he was writhing, Chuuya managed to speak , still writhing like a... slug? - while Dazai remained glued to him with his hands torturing his ribs causing more laughter from Chuuya.
And the boy in the distance remembered the sound of happiness that belonged to Chuuya.
It was… refreshing seeing Chuuya laugh like that.
He hadn’t laughed in a long time.
And Dazai's lips traces a smile, not answering nor obeying Chuuya.
So, he continued to torture the other mercilessly, ignoring Chuuya's desperate and breathless pleas.
At some point Dazai moved away a little, just leaning against the back of the chair, giving Chuuya space to breathe.
Breathless, the boy looked over his shoulder at his... friend? - who had a victorious smile on his lips.
He, as a witness, decided to sit in a closer spot, drinking his chosen poison, eyes turned towards the two boys.
"What." was all Chuuya said, looking at Dazai blankly, after catching his breathe.
The other boy giggled like an excited girl.
Then, he showed a blank expression.
“I was bored," he told him.
"And how is that any of my problem?”
Dazai shrugged his shoulders without giving it much importance, looking casually for the side.
“And I knew Chuuya would be here.”
He saw the way Chuuya raised his eyebrow, not impressed.
“And?”
Dazai didn't answer him for a few moments, just staring at him with that empty look and then he sighed.
“I was hoping Chuuya would kill my boredom"
"Wha- Then go annoy someone else asshole!”
And again Dazai shrugged his shoulders without much reaction.
He gestured vagely without much attention.
“I knew Chuuya would be here." he explained as if that cleared up any doubts.
Chuuya just looked at him.
In turn, Dazai's face unexpectedly lit up like a boy who had just received his desired gift.
“I even made sure your little friend wouldn’t come!” he revealed happily and the boy, who was listening from distance, couldn't help but almost choke on his drink.
Because... what was he talking about?
He wouldn't be talking about him... would he?
He patted his chest a few times before taking a deep breath, catching his breath.
He swore he saw Dazai Osamu looking at him with his one eye, with a sideways smile that said there was nothing he didn't know.
But then Chuuya spoke and Dazai looked at him again, with that childish eye.
It resembled a cat who wanted attention.
“What? What are you talking about? What friend?” he asked with a frown and for a moment the boy felt a pain in his chest, but then Chuuya raised his eyebrows remembering it "Ooh! That guy I drink with?"
Dazai didn't respond, looking at Chuuya, who shrugged his shoulders a little relaxed.
“Oh yeah. He’s a nice guy” he said simply..
Dazai didn't say anything, seeming to be waiting for something.
Chuuya frowned and slowly opened his mouth, raising his eyebrowns in realization.
"Wait a second... You.... were you the one who made him arrive late??? I was wondering why he didn't come!"
“Yes.” Dazai said, simply, face devoid of emotions.
"You bastard! You can't… you can’t just do that!" Chuuya protested.
He shrugged, not very worried.
“I can. I just did it.” then, he sighed, like breathing was a very exhausting thing.
And Chuuya … Chuuya finally seem to be losing his patience.
“But if you ask me, I don't think he minded that much." Dazai said, leaning slightly towards Chuuya. "Look”
And then to the boy's horror, he pointed at himself person, causing Chuuya to look at him.
“Hi Chuuya’s friend!” Dazai said happily, with a hand on Chuuya's shoulder; Chuuya side-eyed his hand with a disguised look, but didn’t say nothing "Is everything okay if I take him today?"
"What the hell??”
Chuuya seemed to be processing the fact that Dazai had sent the boy on a mission that was quite far away and not an emergency.
And the boy didn’t blame him, after all he wa just as shocked as he was.
He had received a message from his comrades saying it.
Either way, he didn't dare to look at the two of them, turning his back to them, drinking from his glass.
Meanwhile, Dazai leaned forward with a smile, without caring.
“See I told you he didn’t mind.”
And apparently Chuuya hadn't agreed, because he hit Dazai on the shoulder.
“Bastard.” he grumbled and Dazai simply laughed; Chuuya sighed “I guess I need to apologize the guy later...” turning his face he murmured.
And Dazai in turn grabbed Chuuya's cheeks betwen his hand, turning his head towards him with a big smile.
He was manhandling Chuuya like he was his dog or doll.
Chuuya didn’t seem very surprised, squinting, not impressed
“Chuuya! I can do it!”
The boy looked at him in disbelief, but did not free himself from the grip.
“No, you probably would do worse.” he managed to say even with his cheeks being griped.
Dazai pouted like a sad kitten and he even made a sad noise.
“Doesn’t Chuuya trust me? I’m hurt”
“Not if it this comes from the guy who faked an emergency to get rid of him.” finally Chuuya pushed Dazai's hand away from his cheeks.
Dazai smiled.
“Why can’t you just be normal and text me like a normal person?” Chuuya sighed.
To which Dazai tilted his head to the side with an inocent expression saying:
“Ehh? But then where’d be the fun at?”
Chuuya sighed again and just pushed back Dazai who had perched on him like a koala and was laughing like a child.
"Get a job.” Chuuya said.
“I have a job!”
“Get a friend.”
“Eeh I have friends!”
“Then get a girlfriend”
“I don’t date. Yuck”
“Then get a dog!”
“But I already have a dog! I have Chuuya!”
Exasperated and much to Dazai’s happiness, Chuuya sighed.
“Then get a life”
“But I don’t want to live.”
Silence.
For a while.
Dazai and Chuuya started to atract some attention and they seem to be inside their own little world.
They were looking wordlessly at each other.
Until Chuuya broke the silence.
“Then… just… I don’t know….leave me alone?”
Then Dazai laughed as if Chuuya had just said the funniest joke ever.
“Not happening!” he said happily, clinging onto Chuuya's shoulders.
"Oi! Get off of me!" he paused "And stop touching my hair bastard!”
"Eeh? Chuuya is speaking as if I wanted to touch him at all.”
They stopped a bit.
Chuuya who was trying to shake Dazai off his shoulders stopped and Dazai also stopped.
So both of them stopped.
The boy was hoping they’d realize how ridiculous they were being.
But no, because.
“Then just get off of me!”
Dazai poked Chuuya's cheek clinging him like a oversized koala.
“I was just checking if if the mixture I added to your shampoo was working”
Chuuya stopped twitching, blinking his eyes.
Dazai took the opportunity to hold Chuuya against him as he clinged to him.
Logically, Chuuya still tried to shake him off.
“What mix?” he looked above his shoulder.
Dazai smiled mischievously.
“Oh you know the mixture that causes hair loss” he said without emotion.
“The what?”
Dazai ignored him, continuing to cling to him.
He sighed as if he was bored again.
“But apparently I didn't do it correctly." he sighed… again "Maybe the quantities are wrong…”
“You… you bastard!”
And the two continued to fight with each other, until the moment the boy decided to leave.
Chuuya wanted to talk with the boy, probably to apologize him.
Unfortunately Dazai realized this and even though he was glued to Chuuya, he screamed loudly, placing a hand on Chuuya's head, pressing it down.
“Goodbye Chuuya’s friend!” he said, raising a hand “I am sorry for earlier!”
And then, Chuuya shouted, after getting Dazai’s hand off his head.
“Don’t believe him!”
Dazai tilted his head towards Chuuya's face.
“Ehhh?”
“Shut up.”
“Chuuya’s friend” like Dazai had called him, stayed there confusingly.
Dazai and Chuuya were looking at him, stopping to move.
But then, remembering their previous conversation...
“And get off of me!” Chuuya screamed.
“No! I am checking if the shampoo is working!” Dazai continued to play with the other's hair, not caring about the strange looks.
He was moving the strands of hair, looking for any gaps in the other's head.
Oh he had taken his hat.
“You idiot- it didn’t work. And give my hat back!”
Dazai stretched out his arm with the hat, making it impossible for Chuuya to reach it.
“Don’t assume just now!” he said happily.
And Chuuya tried to shake Dazai off of himself, as if he were some kind of parasite.
Unfortunately the other boy nimbly dodged the punches and kicks.
“Ah-ah! I have found a a hairless spot!”
“I am going so going to kill you, Dazai!”
They continued bickering and fighting.
As for the boy…. he noticed the hat that had fallen and caught it, to give it to its owner.
The two little demons looked at him.
Blue and shining eyes and a brown eye.
“Chuuya-san. This is yours” he he reached out his hand with the hat.
Chuuya seemed to relax his expression and Dazai finally got off of him.
"Oh thank you" he reached out to accept the hat while the other boy just stared at him with that blank face.
"Wha- Hey!" Chuuya looked at Dazai with a disapproving look, seeing that the other had accepted the hat and placed it on his head.
“Thank you very much.” the little demon bowed.
“Thanks you- that’s mine!”
“Hehe not anymore”
And the two started running from one side to the other, until Chuuya, tired of chasing Dazai, threw himself at him and finally took off his hat.
“Chuuya’s no fun” he mumbled under him; Chuuya was sitting on top of Dazai, his thighs restraining his movements and with a victorious smile.
Then Dazai sighed.
“Boring.” he paused “Let’s go now. I am getting bored”
Chuuya, who was checking to see if the hat was intact, looked at it with a frown.
“To where?” then he said, realizing the strategy with a blank expression "I'm not going to the arcade with you"
Dazai looked like he had taken a bucket of water.
“Wha- Why?” he asked, genuinely confused.
And Chuuya, leaned over him a little - ignoring the fact that they were on top of each other, in front of everyone, details - and lightly t tapped him on the cheek that didn't have the bandage, smiling.
“Find someone else to go with, assole”
He stood up, getting off of Dazai, adjusting his clothes a little.
“Ah-“ he said helpelessly.
Chuuya looked at the lying boy with an air of arrogance.
“Next time don’t be a little shit”
Dazai blinked as he saw Chuuya leaving the bar.
Then he stood up and looked at the the other boy, with a murderous look.
Yickes.
Luckily he just sighed and left.
He looked like a sad kitten.
A black kitten.
The mafia's horror was a black kitten.
