Sam cradled the phone against her ear as she played the message again.
“Hi, Sam, it’s, uh… it’s me.”
Sam . Sam missed the way Lara said her name. That particular way she elongated the “ah” in the middle.
“I… I don’t know why…”
Why what? She still couldn’t figure out what Lara had called about, and after all this time…
“I… I don’t know who else to talk to. Um…”
Wasn’t Jonah with her? Zip? Lara had reconnected with him recently, hadn’t she?
“Sorry.”
“End of message, to erase this recording, press…”
Sam hung up the phone and held it to her chest.
Why now? Why after all this time?
Sam exhaled and closed her eyes tightly. She pressed her phone hard against her chest, and wished to feel her friend's warm embrace once more.
Sam opened her eyes and surveyed her London apartment. She’d kept things fairly spartan after moving back. Lara had ended up with Sam’s belongings after the incident several years ago. Sam didn’t mind. Even after everything, there’s no one she trusted more to keep them.
She glanced at the framed photo she kept near the door. The faces of Reyes, Roth, Grim, Alex, and herself with Lara stared at her.
Sam unlocked her phone and opened her contacts. She pressed the call button on Jonah’s name and put the device to her ear as she listened to the dial tone.
…No answer.
Sam reopened her contacts and found Zip’s name in the list. His number had changed, of course; it had been half a decade since UCL, but she should still be able to reach him by email. Sam sat back at her desk and clicked compose.
Hi Zip!
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I heard you’re working with Lara now. Have you heard from her and Jonah recently? Lara called last night, but I can’t figure out if she’s okay. Jonah hasn’t been answering either.
Sorry I had to get in touch this way. Afterwards, I’d really love to catch up. Please let me know what’s up if you can, and talk to you soon!

Sam closed the browser window, crossed her arms, and panned to see her investigation board. She really should get back to work, but she couldn’t get Lara’s voice out of her head. Sam groaned and shook her head before she snatched her phone off the table and dialled voicemail. She needed to hear Lara’s voice again just one more time.
