Work Text:

“Oh,” Phil says.

He’s turning to go out the door, but Dan is close, closer than he expected, and tall, and Phil stumbles a little.

Usually they’re of a height, somewhat because Dan has that tendency to slouch. But today Dan is in boots and the cowboy hat, both making him taller than usual. Or, the boots add actual height and the hat adds perceived height. The shadowy person outline that Phil’s brain registers in the split second before it recognizes Dan’s face is Tall and a Stranger.

“Look at you,” Phil says, delighted now that his brain has realigned and made sense of these new impressions. Instead of trying for more words he bumps up close, indicating the new and foreign location of Dan’s chin in relation to Phil’s eyes.

“Yeah?” Dan smiles, and his face is angled slightly down. His eyes are dark under the brim of the hat, his smile so easy…

Maybe Phil slumps a little extra in response.“Tall…” He loops his fingers around Dan’s wrist, leans riskily back against the door jamb — risky because he only assumes it’s there although he has no visual or sensory confirmation of it. But he has Dan so he will be fine.

Thankfully the door is where he thought it would be, and Dan’s tall body follows his lead easily, takes a step along with him, looming closer. His hair under the brim of the hat looks poofy and extremely cute, almost worth the twenty minutes of fiddling it took for him to get it to sit like that. Phil’s fingers are itching to mess it up, but he settles for gripping both of Dan’s arms above the elbows and indicating through telepathic means that he wants a kiss now.

The telepathy works like a charm — another clear benefit of having spent the last fifteen years kissing this man — and Dan leans down obligingly. It’s a soft kiss, Dan freshly shaved and squeaky clean and ready for the meet and greet. The hat adds another sense of intimacy to it, as if they are enclosed in their own little private space for just this moment. The angle is just that little bit different; Phil would have to stand on tippy toes to get the same effect as usual. He does that for just a second, pushing up, mashing their lips a little awkwardly, and then sinking back down.

Dan gusts a laugh out of his nose at him. “You’re so obvious,” he murmurs, close still.

“You love it,” Phil counters, smug and confident and ready to face the world now that he got what he wanted. He doesn’t bother waiting for Dan’s response, just pats his arms one last time and turns to open the door for them.
