It took a long time for Ryuji to feel comfortable spending Haru’s money, even though they’d been dating for five years. He’d grown up with very little, so dating someone who had more money than they knew what to do with was a rather odd experience. When they’d first moved in together, Ryuji was very firm about wanting to keep his job. He loved his students, and he was pretty sure he’d be climbing the walls if he had nothing to do all day. Haru had smiled and agreed without a second thought; she had met Ryuji’s track team, and thought they were absolutely wonderful kids.
Ryuji had been secretly saving up a good portion of his salary for a while now. It was a lot easier than it would have been otherwise, since Haru already owned the apartment they lived in, so they didn’t have to pay rent every month. Once he had a few hundred thousand yen saved up, he went to a nearby jewelry store, and asked the salesperson for recommendations for a ring for someone with impeccable taste and a fondness for the color purple. He walked out of the store with a silver ring with an amethyst in the center, which he was certain Haru would love.
Now all he had to do was actually propose.
So, you know, no pressure.
He’d booked out a table at a nice restaurant Sojiro recommended to him, and even wore a suit for the special occasion.
Haru’s smile was sweet as she spoke. “Tell me, Ryu-kun… is there a particular reason you’re dressed so sharply for a simple date?”
“Just, uhh… wanna look nice,” Ryuji mumbled, feeling for the ring box in his pocket.
His pocket was empty.
Why was his pocket empty? Where had the ring gone? What had–
There was a hole in the bottom of his pocket.
Noticing that Ryuji was feeling around on the inside of his suit pocket, Haru spoke up. “Ah, I forgot to mention that this particular suit has a hole in the pocket. Was there something important in your pocket?”
“Uhhh… don’t worry about it,” Ryuji mumbled.
“Nonsense! It may well be somewhere in this restaurant. If you let me know what you lost, I’ll tell the maître d' to keep an eye out for you.”
It was a pretty pricey ring… be a shame to lose it.
“It was, umm… a ring box,” Ryuji said, blushing bright red.
A knowing look appeared on Haru’s face. “A ring box, hmm? Very well.”
Haru flagged down the maître d', asking him to have his staff search the restaurant for the missing ring box, and sure enough, a hour later, the ring box was returned to them.
Haru slid the ring box across the table. “Go on, Ryu-kun. I think there was something you wanted to tell me…”
God, he loved her.
Ryuji took the ring box and stepped out of his seat, going down on one knee. “Haru Okumura. Sweetheart. Love of my life. Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?”
Haru smiled widely. “I thought you would never ask, Ryu-kun.”
