Work Text:

Diana Prince was - in one word - a vision.

Bruce had never met a woman quite like her; she was intelligent, sophisticated, eloquent, kind, but not willing to take anyone’s shit. She was perfect.

Too perfect for someone like him.

Bruce was well-aware that Diana only spent time with him because he was helping her study for her citizenship exam, as well as her English Language certification. Diana had plans to remain in America after university, intending to start a branch of the Themyscira Corporation here, though she did speak about her home country with great fondness.

“I was thinking… we could take a walk,” Diana said, as she and Bruce packed up in the library.

“A walk?” Bruce repeated.

“The weather is so lovely today. It almost feels like I am back in Greece,” Diana said, her voice soft. “You do not have to come with me, if you don’t want to…”

“No, I– I’ll come,” Bruce said, shoving his laptop into his backpack. “Some fresh air might be good for me.”

“Thank you,” Diana said, grabbing her own bag from underneath the table. “Come, Καρδιά μου . Let us go, while the weather is still in our favor.”

Bruce’s breath hitched at that little phrase.

Καρδιά μου .

My heart.

Diana used a lot of those little phrases. Pet names and terms of endearment. Always in Greek. Always so casually Bruce almost wondered if he had imagined them.

He could only conclude it was some sort of twisted little joke at his expense. If Diana knew he spoke Greek, there was no way she would have done it to his face. She probably laughed about it with her friends; poor Brucie, too dumb to know he’s being made fun of.

Too in love with Diana Prince to ever cut her off.

“Bruce?”

“I’m coming.”

Still at her beck and call.

Pathetic.

The weather was perfect, just as Diana had said it would be. Warm and sunny, with a light breeze. Bruce couldn’t imagine how ridiculous they looked together: the wondrous Diana with her golden skin, perfectly wavy hair, and heeled boots that made her a little taller than six feet, even though she really didn’t need to boost to her height; standing next to Bruce, who was so sickly pale that people regularly compared him to a vampire, who had bags under his eyes from late nights up studying, and who hadn’t managed to keep in shape under the weight of his course-load, despite his best efforts.

Eventually, Diana sat down at a bench next to the campus’ lake, looking out across the water, a small smile on her face.

“What are you thinking about?” Bruce asked.

Diana looked over to him, her eyes shining like stars. “I am simply… considering how lucky I am to be here with you in this moment, Αγάπη μου .”

Bruce finally had enough. “Could you stop calling me that?”

“Hmmm?”

“I’m surprised you didn’t know that I’m a polyglot,” Bruce remarked. “I speak Greek.”

Diana was silent for a while. “I see… what seems to be the issue?”

“The issue is that you’ve been mocking me in a language you thought I didn’t speak,” Bruce snapped.

“I have not been mocking you, Bruce.”

“Really?” Bruce snarled. “ Καρδιά μου, Αγάπη μου, Ζωή μου, Δικός μου … do I need to keep going? Or are you getting the picture?”

My Heart, My Love, My Life.

Mine.

Diana took a very slow breath. “You never asked me to stop,” she said at last. “I’m aware I tend to be a little… overly affectionate with my lovers, but you never said anything negative about it.”

It was Bruce’s turn to freeze.

“Lovers,” he repeated.

“Yes?” Diana replied. “Lovers. You and I. We are lovers.”

“You never–”

Bruce paused.

There had been a moment, a few nights ago. Diana had called him, a few drinks in from a party with her friends, and asked him to meet her at her favorite coffee shop that Wednesday. When he agreed, she happily said, “It’s a date!” and  hung up.

Bruce had thought it was another joke.

But now… he was beginning to suspect otherwise. “That night, when you called me… it wasn’t a joke?”

“Why would I joke about something like that?” Diana asked, so genuinely heartbroken that Bruce wondered how he could have ever thought she’d mock him.

“People have before,” Bruce said. “I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have assumed the worst of you.”

“You clearly have a reason to.” Diana’s voice was a little stiff. Still, she smiled hesitantly. “May we start again, Καρδιά μου ?”

Of course, Bruce could never say no to Diana Prince.
