Chapter 1: Part One

Chapter Text

If there was one thing Osamu took pride in, it was the fact that he does not lie. Miya Osamu is not a liar, which has held true for the past 20 years. Well, that was true until Osamu had come home for the holidays and heard his brother bragging, yet again, about his boyfriend of nearly two years at that point.

Osamu’s twin, Miya Atsumu, was very similar to himself, but if there was one thing that had set them apart, it was the fact that Miya Atsumu was a liar. Although the lies were never big and have severely decreased in recent years, they did not erase the constant white lies from their childhood. After nearly a year and a half of this “boyfriend” Atsumu continued to bring up, Osamu and their parents had yet to meet him, so naturally, Osamu assumed he was fake. Oh, the surprise on Osamu’s face was instantaneous when Atsumu walked through the door holding the hand of a tall, and unfortunately attractive, man who matched the descriptions Atsumu so graciously provided.

How the ever-loving fuck did Atsumu land the man? Not to mention that he was a med-student AND was as passionate about volleyball as Atsumu. Everything that Atsumu described about one Sakusa Kiyoomi was true, all 192 centimeters, and Osamu had never felt more confused in his entire life.

Ever since the day Atsumu walked through the door with his “perfect” boyfriend, Osamu had avoided mentioning relationships with his family. After Sakusa had walked through that door, all questions turned to Osamu: “When are you gonna get a partner?” “Are you dating someone?” “Do you want us to set you up with someone?” Osamu couldn’t stand it; he hated it when people would question his relationship status. So Osamu did the only thing he could think of.

“Ya gotta boyfriend!?” Atsumu gasped from across the table at him, earning a glare from their Mother. “What? It’s a fair response, Ma!” Atsumu said, pure surprise and confusion in his eyes as he talked with his mouth full.

“Finish yer food before ya talk, Atsumu,” their father said as Atsumu pouted.

“Osamu, dear, we’re so happy fer ya! When did this happen?” Their mother asked, a large smile on her face as Osamu tried to think quickly.

“Oh, we only recently started datin’, only ‘bout a month or so,” Osamu said, hoping that answer was enough.

“Oh my! Very new then!” She gasped. It seemed like it had worked. “‘M sorry if yer father and I made ‘ya uncomfortable with trying to set you up with someone,” she apologized, reaching out to hold Osamu’s hand.

“Where did’ja meet him?” Atsumu asked, eyes slightly narrowed with his arms crossed. A soft smack to his shoulder snapped his eyes away from his brother and to their mother as Osamu inwardly thanked her.

“Ya don’t hav’ta answer that, yer brother was just talkin’ to himself,” their father said as Osamu watched his parents. It would seem suspicious if Osamu didn’t talk about his “boyfriend.”

“‘S fine, we met at college, in the coffee shop he works at,” Osamu answered, trying to figure out how he pulled that out of his ass so quickly.

“What's he look like?” Atsumu asked quickly, earning glares again but ignoring them. Atsumu was trying to figure out if Osamu was lying; his brother saw right through him even before his parents,

“He’s a bit taller than me, but not by much; he’s from Aichi,” Osamu added quickly, trying to stay one step ahead of his brother, but in his bath of lies, he slowly came to realize he may have been describing someone he knew a bit too well.

“Ah, he’s so far away from home, going ta school in Osaka,” his mother covered her mouth from shock. “What does he study?” She asked, eyes bright and warm as she looked at her son.

“Art,” he said, slightly nervous that his parents would disapprove. “He makes really amazing paintings; he works on them all the time,” he added very quickly as he saw the confusion hit their faces.

“Ya know what, why don’ ya invite him over! We could go ta the cabin fer yer guys’ spring vacation, spenda week together. Kiyoomi, ya could come, and Osamu can invite’is boyfriend,” their father suggested as Atsumu looked over at his silent boyfriend, who looked back at him as Osamu inwardly cursed to himself.

Shit.

“Sounds great, Pa, ‘ll definitely see if he’s able,” Osamu smiled, wondering how in God's name he would find a boyfriend like he described in 2 months. Or if he could convince the singular man, he was describing pretending to be his boyfriend and going on a family vacation for a whole week.

Once he had returned to his apartment, Osamu dropped his bags to the ground, groaning into his hands as the door closed behind him.

“Jesus, did somebody die or something?” came his roommate's sassy remark. Osamu couldn’t help the smile that came to his lips after hearing his voice after a bit over a week. His hands fell as he looked at the other, seeing him sitting on their couch with a sketchbook and some random cartoon playing.

Suna Rinatarō, Osamu’s roommate for nearly three years at that point. They had lived so comfortably together their first two years in that cramped college dorm that they had decided to rent an apartment together for their third year and are hoping to keep it for their fourth as well. Not only were they perfect roommates for each other, but they were also perfect friends.

The two spent all their time together, whether studying in each other's presence or arguing over which fast food place had the best fries. They walked to classes together, grocery shopped together, cooked and cleaned together, and partied together. So, who else would Osmau describe to his parents when he was talking about his “boyfriend”? They were practically inseparable.

“His boyfriend is actually real?” Suna asked Osamu, his lags laying on the other's lap as Osamu’s as his mouth hung open, shocked.

“Yeah! That’s what I said,” Osamu recapped as Suna blinked, snapping himself out of shock.

“Damn, now you gotta find someone better than a rich, hot med student,” Suna snickered, digging his clothed feet into the cushion. “Though you would lose the best roommate you’ve ever had,” he sighed as Osamu laughed.

“Where will I find someone like that when I spend all my time with you? I don’ think some rich, hot, med-student is gonna wanna date someone who watches ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ with their roommate on a Satuday night,” Osamu said, rolling his eyes as he thought of what his brother would be doing on a Satuday night. Most likely playing volleyball or making stupid Instagram posts.

Suna was quiet after that statement, simply drawing as Osamu sighed, watching Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles ruin Mojo Jojo’s plans once again. His head leaned back, staring at the ceiling before he felt a soft kick in his shoulder. Osamu’s head slowly rolled to look at Suna as he placed his sketchbook down and came closer to his roommate.

“You’re upset about something,” Suna pointed out, his voice calm but attentive as Osamu sighed. You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to; I’m not gonna make you,” he reminded. Osamu nodded, admiring his roommate as they made eye contact.

“I don’t wanna worry about it today; it’s not that important,” he slightly lied as Suna raised an eyebrow at him. Great, just one lie after another. First, his family came, and now, his best friend.

“Whatever you say, but just remember that we're friends, and you can talk to me whenever,” Suna said, a soft smile warming his face before he yawned. I’m gonna go to sleep; I’ve got work in the morning,” he smiled, standing up as Osamu watched him disappear into his bedroom.

Osamu sighed again, turning off the TV before standing and entering his bedroom. Tomorrow was a new day, and Osamu would have to let him know about his situation sometime within the next two months.

______

It took an entire month for Osamu to explain to his roommate what the fuck he had gotten himself into at that dinner with his family. For the first two days, he avoided talking about dinner after their late-night debrief. Within the first week, Osamu had given up searching for a fake boyfriend, knowing nobody could match the extra specific details he granted his family that night. By the end of the second week, Osamu had decided he must convince his roommate to be his fake boyfriend. Then, for the next two weeks, Osamu tried to come up with ways to explain to Suna what had happened and why they needed to fake the date.

Osamu had to pick the perfect day to explain to Suna. It had to be a day when he wasn’t too stressed from his assignments (if there ever really was a day), a day when their next-door neighbour didn’t scold him for his tattoos in the hallway. So when Suna walked through their apartment door, Osamu couldn’t help but observe him to see if he was having a good day.

Suna looked at him for a second, raised an eyebrow, and removed his shoes. "Not mad, just confused," Osamu concluded as he watched his roommate walk into their kitchen area. Osamu’s eyes followed him, watching him walk out with some leftovers from the night before. Suna glared at Osamu, turning his eyes away as he sat beside him, looking at his phone as he ate.

They both sat quietly, Osamu pretending to work on his assignment as Suna scrolled through his Instagram feed. Osamu opened his mouth, feeling Suna’s eyes before he closed it again. A soft sigh escaped him as Suna turned his attention back to his phone.

After another few minutes, Osamu tried again, slightly looking at Suna as he raised an eyebrow. His mouth closed as he looked away, earning a soft huff from Suna as he stood up, heading towards the kitchen to clean his dish.

Osamu placed his head in his hands, knowing today was the day to ask his roommate. He knew there was no better time than now, but he couldn’t. It felt terrible to ask his best friend something like this, but Osamu left himself with no other choice. He had described his roommate as his boyfriend to his family.

Osamu walked into the kitchen after the sink water hadn’t run for a few minutes, looking for his roommate. When he walked in, Suna was missing. Had he left the kitchen without Osamu noticing? No, Osamu had been watching him since he returned from class.

Osamu looked into the living room, wondering if Suna had made his way in there without him noticing. A small wave of panic hit Osamu as he hurried to Suna’s room, peeking inside to see nobody inside. Where was his roommate?!

“Rin! Where are ya?” Osamu raised his voice, to hell with his neighbours if they complained.

“Bathroom!” He heard an echo through the halls as Osamu sighed; his roommate had not magically disappeared.

Osamu made his way back to the couch, sitting down and checking his phone. A picture of Atsumu and Sakusa had been sent to the family group chat; they seemed to have been at a volleyball match. He closed his phone as Suna walked into the room, his eyes watching him as he stopped and glared at him.

“Okay, you’ve been watching me like a fucking hawk ever since I got home, and it’s honestly pissing me off. What?” He said eyebrows furrowed as Osamu sighed.

“Sorry, Rin.. ya might wanna sit fer this one,” he smiled slightly as Suna sat with his legs crossed facing him.

“I may’er may not’ve told my family that I have a boyfriend, and when I was describing him, I may have basically described ya, and they asked if we could all go on a family vacation during our spring vacation, so now I kinda need’ya to be my fake boyfriend,” Osamu said as Suna sat quietly, staring at him, utterly flabbergasted.

His mouth opened and then closed. His roommate was entirely speechless, not that Osamu could blame him.

“H-How the— what the— why me?!” Suna said as Osamu leaned back onto the couch.

“I don’t know. You were the first person I thought of, so I accidentally described ya,” Osamu groaned as Suna face-palmed.

“Miya Osamu...” Suna groaned as Osamu winced. Rin never called him by his full name.

“I promise ’s jus’ fer this one trip! Afterwards, we can fake break up and pretend this never happened!” Osamu said as Suna looked at him.

“That’s not how fake dating actually plays out, and your family is gonna hate me after we break up. Do you know how terrible it’d be for my best friend's family to hate me?” Suna said as Osamu winced.

“Then we’ll make it my fault! Let’s just say we broke up because I decided I wasn’t ready for a relationship,” Osamu said as Suna sighed.

“Please, Rin, I promise nothin’ bad’s gonna happen, we’ll still be friends afterwards ‘nd my family is gonna love ya,” Osamu said, grabbing the others hand as he groaned.

“Okay, fine,” Suna agreed as Osamu breathed a breath of relief. “But we have to set a list of rules, and I gotta figure out whatever the fuck you already told them, okay?” He asked as Osamu nodded, still holding the other’s hand.

“And we have to set a date to break up; we can’t just break up the minute the trip is over,” he added as Osamu nodded.

“Why do you know so much about fake datin’?” Osamu asked as Suna blushed.

“I like movies,” he responded as Osamu smirked at him.

“So what do the movies say?” Osamu asked.

“They say we’re gonna fall in love by the end of this trip,” Suna smirked, leaning in closer to Osamu. “You’re not gonna fall in love with me, right?” He teased as Osamu felt his face go hot.

“I—” he stuttered as Suna laughed, tilting his head backwards.

“I’m only joking. That kinda stuff doesn’t actually happen in real life,” he said as Osamu laughed alongside him, ignoring the increase in his heart rate.

“But for real, though, we need to set some ground rules on how this relationship will play out,” Suna said as he sat back.

“Okay, what did you have in mind?” Osamu asked as Suna sighed.
