“Because you…” Mike follows the contours of Will's jaw with his eyes; if he can’t see it on his face, he hopes to catch a reaction from the rest of his body. “Because you want to.”Or: Will is having a tough time coping with college anxiety which results in constantly snapping at Mike. “What?” He replies, pulling the cigarette from his lips and lightly blowing the smoke from his mouth. “Just because my dad is the pastor, you think I can’t enjoy a cigarette?

Will Byers is no stranger to religious guilt. He carries it everywhere he goes, and it’s starting to weigh him down.
When he meets Mike Wheeler, the pastor’s son, he realizes there is more to life than just fearing God, and it’s much scarier.

“Sorry. I just—I have this… thing,” Mike says slowly. “I think. About you being, like, protected, I guess? Taken care of. I think that’s why I find it so nice that you’re relaxed and healthy now. Because you never got to experience that before.”
“That’s… actually really sweet,” Will says, smiling. “Is that why you always want to cook me food and buy me things?”
It’s an honest question. Mike can tell from the look in Will’s eyes. He’s being completely genuine, not even trying to tease Mike about it. He probably doesn’t realise how deep this runs. Just how badly Mike wants this.

Will is happy, healthy, and glowing. Mike has a very hard time being normal about it.
