Work Text:

Sophie knew it was dangerous. She knew she shouldn’t be there, standing in his kitchen, her pulse quickening as they looked at one another. If she didn’t leave now, she knew where they would end up, again.

They had agreed to take things slow, to ease back into each other’s lives and truly get to know one another again. Two years had passed since that whirlwind few weeks filled with laughter, late nights, and passion. She’d fallen for him then, deeply, but her world had been ripped apart: her father’s sudden death, the cruelty of her stepmother, the forced separation. The trauma had erased him from her memory, leaving a hollow space where their love had once been.

But Benedict hadn’t forgotten. When they’d met again a month earlier, she’d looked at him with no recognition, her memories of him buried under years of pain and confusion. She hadn’t remembered their time together, shared moments, or the love they’d built in those brief, blissful weeks. To her, those memories were fragments, brief flashes she’d assumed were dreams of a life she’d never truly known.

In truth, he had searched for her. Benedict had pieced together her past, learning of the abuse she’d endured and the lies her stepmother, Araminta, had told to keep her hidden. Sophie’s memory loss had been no accident. After Sophie’s father left everything to her, Araminta’s rage had turned violent, and she’d pushed Sophie down the stairs, then lied to everyone, saying Sophie had run away. When Sophie left the hospital, Araminta moved them out of Kent, severing Sophie from her past and her memories.

Something had eventually drawn Sophie back to Kent, and that’s where she and Benedict had crossed paths again. He was ecstatic to see her, but as she looked at photos of herself with him and his family, it all felt strange and overwhelming. None of it made sense, until, in one final confrontation with Araminta, Benedict had shown her undeniable proof of their past. In her fury, Araminta had once again pushed Sophie down the stairs, and this time, the shock brought everything rushing back: her love for Benedict, the stolen memories, the life she’d lost.

With Araminta’s arrest, Sophie agreed to try again with Benedict. But this time, she wanted to go slow, to build something real and stable as she reclaimed her life and grappled with the two years she’d lost. They had been on two dates, carefully measured and tentative, each one a small step toward rekindling their love.

But tonight, Benedict had surprised her, recreating their very first date. As she stood there in his kitchen, the memory of that night mingling with the reality of this one, she felt her heart opening, her carefully laid plans slipping away as she remembered the start of the evening.

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Sophie and Benedict had found themselves on the rooftop of the art museum where they’d met two years earlier, the city sprawled out beneath them. The air was cool, and a gentle breeze played with Sophie’s dark hair, causing it to dance around her face.

They had shared a moment earlier, laughing over a silly joke, and now a comfortable silence enveloped them. Benedict had glanced at Sophie, her dark eyes reflecting the fading light. Something unspoken hung between them, a mix of anticipation and nervous energy.

"Do you remember our first kiss?" Benedict asked, breaking the silence.

Benedict smiled, the memory flooding back, the awkwardness, the laughter, the way the world felt like it paused for just a moment. "How could I forget? You nearly tripped over your own feet!"

He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, well, I was a bit nervous."

"Just a bit?" she teased, stepping closer.

Their eyes locked, the playful atmosphere shifting into something deeper. Benedict took a breath, his heart racing. "I know we are taking it slow… but what if we try again? Just to see if it’s different now?"

Sophie’s heart fluttered. “Okay.”

He leaned in, the world around them fading away. This time, there was no hesitation. Their lips met softly at first, a tentative brush that quickly deepened as they both leaned into the moment. The kiss was warm and electric, igniting feelings they had both been too afraid wouldn’t be there anymore.

When they pulled apart, both breathless and smiling, the city lights twinkled like stars around them. “Definitely different,” Sophie said, her cheeks flushed.

Benedict grinned, a sense of relief washing over him. “So, should we make this a tradition? Every year we come back here and recreate our first date”

“Absolutely,” she replied, her eyes sparkling. They stood close, hearts racing, before Benedict took Sophie’s hand and led her back to his motorbike. With an unspoken agreement, they headed back to Benedict’s place.

Every moment was the same as it had been before and it had led them back to Benedict’s home and here she was… in the kitchen as Benedict poured her a glass of wine.

In her heart and soul, she wanted him, she wanted him to lift her up and carry her once again to his bedroom, to kiss her passionately and make love to her but in her head, she knew it was dangerous.

She did love his man, she knew she did and if she was being honest with herself, she’d loved him when she couldn’t remember him.

As he poured the wine, the rich, deep red swirling in the glass mirrored the tumult of emotions swirling within her. Sophie leaned against the counter, her mind racing between desire and doubt. The kitchen was warm, the scent of herbs and spices lingering from the meal they had shared, a meal that felt like a fragile thread binding them back together.

“Here you go,” Benedict said, handing her the glass, his fingers brushing against hers. A spark shot through her, igniting the memories she had fought so hard to keep at bay. The way he had looked at her, the way they had moved together, the laughter and the softness of his touch, all of it wrapped around her like a familiar blanket.

She took a sip, the wine smooth and comforting, but it couldn’t drown out the warning bells ringing in her head. “Benedict, I, ”

“Sophie,” he interrupted gently, stepping closer, his eyes searching hers. “I know this is complicated, but I also know what we had. I can feel it. You can feel it.”

Her heart raced at his words, the truth of them clashing with her fears. She was still piecing together the remnants of her life, the scars of the past so raw and fresh. “I want to trust this, to trust us. But it’s so overwhelming. I don’t want to lose myself again.”

Benedict’s expression softened, his sincerity evident. “You won’t lose yourself. I promise I’ll be here every step of the way. We’ll take it slow, together.”

She bit her lip, weighing his words, the warmth of his presence igniting something deep within her. “I just… I can’t go back to being that person who jumped in head first without looking.”

“Then let’s just enjoy tonight,” he said, his voice low and inviting. “No expectations. Just us.”

Sophie felt a flutter of hope amid her uncertainty. She stepped closer, the distance between them closing as she surrendered to the moment. Maybe it was dangerous, but standing there with him, she realised that some risks were worth taking. As she looked up at him, a tentative smile broke through her apprehension. “Okay. Just tonight.”

Benedict’s smile mirrored hers, and he lifted her chin gently, his thumb brushing her cheek. “Just tonight,” he echoed, before leaning in once more, their lips meeting in a kiss that spoke of promises and possibilities.

Sophie melted into the kiss, feeling a rush of warmth spread through her. It was as if the world outside faded away, leaving just the two of them in this moment of rekindled connection. His lips moved against hers with a tenderness that made her heart ache, reminding her of everything they had shared and everything they could still have.

When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads resting against each other, she could see the hope in Benedict’s eyes, a reflection of her own. “See? This isn’t so bad,” he murmured, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

Sophie smiled, a little shy but emboldened by the honesty in his gaze. “No, it’s not. It feels… right.”

“Then let’s keep it that way,” he said, stepping back just enough to give her space but not so far that the connection between them faded. “We can talk, share more memories, or even make new ones, whatever you need.”

She took a deep breath, appreciating his patience. “I’d like that. I really would.” The weight of the past still lingered, but at that moment, it felt lighter, almost manageable.

“Why don’t we start with something simple?” Benedict suggested, moving back to the counter and pouring himself a glass of wine. “What was your favourite part of our first date?”

Sophie chuckled, her mind racing back to the laughter and the flirty banter. “Definitely the way you spilled half your drink when you were trying to impress me,” she said, laughing at the memory. “You were so nervous!”

Benedict laughed, a warm, rich sound that made her heart flutter. “Okay, fair point. I guess I was a little clumsy back then. But is that really your favourite part?”

She hesitated for a moment, her thoughts darting between the fun of that night and the deeper connections they had forged. “Honestly? It was how easy it felt to talk to you. I didn’t even know you, but it felt like I could tell you anything.”

His expression softened, and he took a step closer again, a serious note in his voice. “You can still tell me anything, Sophie. I’m here for you, whatever you want to share.”

Her heart swelled at his words, but the lingering shadows of her past tugged at her. “It’s just… I have so much to unpack. I’m still figuring out who I am without all the chaos.”

Benedict nodded, understanding etched on his face. “Then let’s take it one step at a time. No pressure. We can create new memories, and build something fresh, and I’ll be right here to support you.”

Sophie smiled, feeling a flicker of hope ignite within her. “That sounds perfect.” She took a sip of her wine, savouring the taste, and felt the warmth of his presence envelop her.

As they chatted about lighter topics, their favourite movies, travel dreams, and shared interests, Sophie felt the tension from earlier begin to dissolve. The conversation flowed easily, and each laugh brought them closer, like pieces of a puzzle clicking into place.

But the unspoken tension still lingered, a current beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to surface. When the laughter faded, and they found themselves standing close again, she looked up at him, her heart pounding.

“Benedict,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I know we’re taking it slow, but I feel so drawn to you. I don’t want to overthink it, but I can’t help it. There’s so much history, so much to navigate.”

His eyes searched hers, filled with an intensity that made her breath hitch. “You’re not alone in this. I want to be your safe space and help you through it. If that means we take things slow, I’m all in.”

Sophie felt tears prick her eyes, overwhelmed by the sincerity of his words. “Thank you for being so understanding.”

Benedict smiled, brushing his thumb along her jawline, grounding her. “It’s my pleasure. But just know that I want more, Sophie. When you’re ready, I’m here. I want to know all of you.”

His words hung in the air between them, charged with possibility. With a mix of excitement and fear, Sophie took a step closer, her heart daring to hope again. “Maybe tonight is the start of something new, something we should have had if it wasn’t for her,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

“Maybe it is,” he replied, his gaze unwavering.

The air between them buzzed with unspoken possibilities, and Sophie felt herself leaning in, drawn by the magnetic pull of Benedict’s presence. She could see the desire in his eyes, and it mirrored her own, a longing for connection that transcended the chaos of their pasts.

“Maybe tonight can be a new beginning,” she murmured, emboldened by the moment.

Benedict stepped closer, his gaze locked on hers, filled with a mix of hope and intensity. “I’d like that. But only if it’s what you really want.”

Her heart raced at the sincerity in his voice. “I do want it. I want to explore what we can be together, without the weight of the past hanging over us.”

He smiled, a soft, reassuring expression that made her feel safe. “Then let’s take it slow and let things unfold naturally. We can just enjoy each other’s company.”

As they stood there, the city lights twinkling outside the window, Sophie felt a sense of freedom washing over her. It was like the chains of her past were beginning to loosen, and with Benedict by her side, she felt she could navigate this new chapter.

“Do you want to watch a movie?” he suggested, breaking the spell. “I have a few favourites we can choose from.”

“Sure, that sounds nice,” she replied, grateful for the casual direction.

Benedict led her to the living room, where a cosy couch awaited. He grabbed the remote and settled beside her, their shoulders brushing, sending a rush of warmth through her. As he scrolled through the options, Sophie couldn’t help but steal glances at him, the way he concentrated, his brow furrowed slightly. It felt so familiar and yet exhilaratingly new.

“How about this one?” he said, stopping on a romantic comedy. “It’s a classic.”

She chuckled, nodding. “Perfect. I could use a good laugh.”

As the movie started, they fell into a comfortable rhythm, Benedict occasionally making jokes that made her laugh, their hands brushing every now and then. Each accidental touch sent shivers of electricity through her, reigniting the spark that had always been there.

But as the film progressed, Sophie found herself drifting in thought. Despite the laughter and lightness, a part of her still wrestled with the shadows of her past. She wanted to fully embrace this moment, to let go of the fear that had clung to her for so long.

Benedict must have sensed her shift because, during a particularly funny scene, he turned to her, his expression serious but gentle. “Sophie, if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, please just tell me. We can pause everything. I’m not going anywhere.”

His words wrapped around her like a lifeline. “I appreciate that. It’s just… sometimes I feel like I’m still catching up, you know? Like I’m behind everyone else.”

He nodded, his gaze unwavering. “It’s okay to feel that way. Just remember, you’re not alone in this. I’m here to support you.”

Taking a deep breath, Sophie let the tension ease from her shoulders. “Thank you for being so patient with me. It means a lot.”

“Always,” he replied, his voice steady and reassuring.

As the movie continued, Sophie leaned her head against his shoulder, savouring the warmth radiating from him. Each passing moment felt more natural, more like home, and slowly, the remnants of her fear began to dissipate.

Halfway through the film, during a particularly romantic scene, Benedict turned to her, a spark of mischief in his eyes. “So, do you think our first kiss was better than this?”

Sophie laughed, playfully nudging him. “You’re really asking for it, huh?”

“Just curious,” he said, feigning innocence, though the playful glint in his eyes betrayed him.

“Okay, let’s settle this once and for all.” With a boldness she didn’t know she had, Sophie turned to face him fully, their faces just inches apart. “Let’s recreate it.”

Benedict’s breath hitched, and a look of surprise flashed across his face, quickly replaced by a warm smile. “You’re on.”

In that charged moment, Sophie felt the weight of her past life entirely. This was their time, their space, and she was ready to embrace it fully. As she leaned in, their lips met, tentative at first, but then deepening as the kiss ignited all the pent-up emotions they had both been holding back.

The kiss was everything she had remembered and more, tender, passionate, and filled with an urgency that sent her heart racing. It felt like coming home.

When they finally pulled away, breathless and smiling, Sophie couldn’t help but laugh. “Okay, I think that might just top the original.”

Benedict grinned, his eyes sparkling, his heart light “I think so too” he replied as he leaned back on the sofa.

The room was cast in the warm, amber glow of evening light, softening the edges of everything around them. Benedict and Sophie sat close on the plush, slightly worn sofa, their knees brushing each time one of them shifted, the space between them gradually shrinking as if pulled by an unseen force. It was familiar and yet charged, a second chance that felt entirely new.

Benedict lifted a hand, tracing a gentle line along Sophie’s jaw, his thumb brushing her cheek as he held her gaze, a mix of tenderness and desire softening his eyes. Her breath caught, and she felt herself drawn to him, leaning in until her forehead rested lightly against his. The moment hung between them, quiet but electric, filling the space with a warm hum that resonated through her.

Without words, he dipped his head, letting his lips graze hers. It was a whisper of a kiss, lingering just long enough to send a shiver up her spine before pulling back slightly. She felt her heart quicken, and as if in answer, her hands slid up his chest, feeling the steady beat beneath his shirt.

Benedict responded, leaning in again, his kiss deepening, more insistent but still achingly gentle. His hands found her waist, pulling her closer as they moved together, their breaths mingling in the small, shared space between them. She felt the press of the cushions against her back as he leaned over her, his touch light but certain, grounding her even as her head began to spin.

Every movement was slow, intentional, fingers tracing, soft sighs filling the spaces between them. It was as if they had all the time in the world, each touch a quiet promise, each kiss a gentle exploration. Benedict’s lips found the sensitive spot just below her ear, drawing a soft gasp from her that made him smile against her skin, his fingers threading through her hair, cradling her close.

Benedict’s fingers lingered on the hem of Sophie’s top, brushing lightly against her waist as he slipped his fingers beneath, feeling the warmth of her skin. He glanced up, his gaze meeting hers, silently asking for permission, and when she nodded, her breath catching, he began to ease the fabric upward, inch by inch.

Sophie lifted her arms, and Benedict slowly slipped the top over her head, revealing the bare curve of her shoulders, and the gentle lines of her collarbone. He let the blouse fall softly to the floor, his hands returning to her shoulders to trail down her arms, his touch featherlight as if savouring every inch of her newly exposed skin.

She reached for him then, her hands finding the buttons of his shirt. Her fingers worked slowly, savouring the anticipation, the gradual reveal of skin. She undid each button carefully, her fingers lingering against his chest as she parted the fabric, pushing it back over his shoulders. The shirt slipped off easily, pooling on the sofa beside them, leaving him bare to her gaze, and her hands traced the familiar lines of his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath her palms.

Benedict leaned in, his lips finding her shoulder, brushing soft kisses along the line of her collarbone, pausing just long enough to breathe her in. His hands moved to the waistband of her jeans, pausing as his eyes lifted to hers, once again asking for her silent approval. She nodded, her fingers tightening on his shoulders as he eased the denim down her legs, each inch of skin exposed to his touch making her pulse quicken.

They moved together, gently, patiently, helping one another out of their clothes, each layer slipping away as they revealed themselves bit by bit. When they were finally bare, they paused, taking in the sight of each other in the dim, golden light. There was no rush, just the gentle weight of his hand at her waist, the warmth of her skin pressed against his.

Benedict’s hands were gentle but steady as he guided Sophie back onto the cushions, settling beside her as he leaned down, his forehead pressing softly to hers, breath mingling in the small space between them. Their kisses grew deeper, slower, each one lingering as if they wanted to savour every moment of this connection.

His fingers traced slow, reverent lines along her skin, every touch seeming to memorise her as he explored each familiar curve, while Sophie’s hands found his shoulders, feeling the tension there and letting her fingers ease it away. The world around them dissolved, leaving only the quiet intimacy of this shared space, each movement slow and careful, as if they were rediscovering each other all over again.

They moved together naturally, as though they were breathing in sync, every touch, every shift, an effortless dance. She sighed softly as he drew her closer, and her hands drifted down his back, feeling the strength in him, the warmth of his skin pressed to hers. Their bodies met in perfect rhythm, quiet gasps and soft murmurs filling the spaces between them until the line between where one ended and the other began became blurred.

For a moment, time seemed to suspend, as they held each other in the quiet, sharing only the warmth and closeness they had created. And as they lay there, the soft evening light casting gentle shadows around them, it was clear that they had found something real, something lasting and deeply, completely theirs.
