Kakashi and Aizawa walked together down the quiet streets of Musutafu, the silence of the early evening settling over them. Kakashi was relaxed, hands tucked in his pockets, mask pulled up as usual. Aizawa, however, seemed on alert, his dark eyes scanning the empty alleyways, always vigilant for trouble.
And then they saw it.
A figure loomed in the shadows of an alleyway just ahead, crouched beside what looked like a crumpled body. The man was dressed in tattered clothing, his hair unruly, and even from a distance, Kakashi could see a faint glint in his dark eye. Aizawa tensed immediately, his capture weapon unfurling slightly as he prepared to subdue the stranger. Kakashi, for once, was also thrown off guard.
It couldn't be… But that profile, that rough, spiky hair… Kakashi's voice was barely a whisper. "Obito?"
The man’s head snapped up, and those familiar dark eyes narrowed in disbelief. “Ba… bakakakashi?”
The two of them stared, the weight of years—of another life, another world—settling between them. Kakashi was stunned; this wasn’t some teenage version of his former friend but an adult, fully grown, with all the memories and experiences they'd once shared. And Obito looked…alive. Despite the haunted look in his eyes, he seemed present, real.
Aizawa glanced between them, raising an eyebrow. "I don't know who you are, but you’re trespassing. I’ll need you to step away—"
But Obito was barely listening. He kept his gaze on Kakashi, a smirk playing on his lips as if he found something mildly amusing about the whole scene. “Wanna go get ice cream?”
Kakashi blinked, taken aback. Ice cream? Of all things, Obito was asking him if he wanted ice cream, standing here beside a suspicious, probably unconscious stranger in the middle of a dark alley? But there was something about Obito’s carefree expression that Kakashi recognized from long ago, something he thought he’d never see again. So, who was he to say no?
“…Sure,” he replied, a faint smile beneath his mask.
Without missing a beat, Obito reached out, his hand grabbing Kakashi’s shoulder, and before Kakashi could protest, they vanished in a flash. The alley, the tense atmosphere, and Aizawa were all left behind. The world reformed around them in an instant, and when Kakashi opened his eyes, he found himself in front of an ice cream stand, the late evening bustle of people passing by as if this were a perfectly normal scene.
The vendor looked mildly startled to have two men appear out of nowhere but quickly offered a polite smile, used to serving eager customers.
“What’ll it be?” Obito asked, eyeing the different flavors with the curiosity of someone who hadn’t seen ice cream in years.
Kakashi blinked, still processing everything that had just happened. “Uh… vanilla.”
Obito raised an eyebrow, his expression judgmental. “Of course, you’d pick the most boring flavor.” He turned to the vendor with a shrug. “I’ll take chocolate.”
They both received their cones, and for a moment, Kakashi and Obito stood side by side, simply eating ice cream like they were old friends. Kakashi glanced at Obito, his mind racing with questions but strangely content with the simplicity of the moment.
“So…” Kakashi began, taking a bite of his vanilla. “You’re alive.”
Obito shrugged. “Looks that way, doesn’t it?” He grinned, a touch of his old self peeking through. “And you’re still a mask-wearing weirdo.”
Kakashi smirked under his mask. “And you’re still as annoying as ever.”
Meanwhile, back in the alleyway, Aizawa was pacing. One moment, Hitashi had been beside him, the next—gone, leaving him alone with a crumpled stranger and a lot of unanswered questions. He rubbed his temple, trying to figure out where his kid could have possibly disappeared to.
Kakashi, on the other hand, was doing his best to answer Obito’s barrage of questions about this new world, his life as Shinso, and everything else that had happened since they’d last seen each other. They’d covered a lot, from the quirks to the strange new landscape and heroes around them, while somehow never moving beyond the mundane exchange of two old friends reconnecting over ice cream.
"So, Kakashi…" Obito’s tone was lighter, almost nostalgic. “Why are you here?”
Kakashi shrugged. “Reincarnation, I guess. Figured if I got a second chance, might as well make it count.”
“Hmm.” Obito took another bite of his chocolate cone, his face thoughtful. “We’re really in a different world, aren’t we?”
“Yeah,” Kakashi replied, watching Obito’s gaze drift off into the distance, his thoughts clearly still adapting to the change.
After a long silence, Obito sighed, a strange mix of relief and exhaustion showing in his expression. “Feels…good, to just be here. Alive.”
Kakashi gave a rare, genuine smile beneath his mask, glad to see this side of his old friend. “Then let’s make the most of it.”
Just as they were about to finish their ice creams, a loud voice broke through the crowd.
“Hitoshi!” Aizawa was storming up, looking like he’d just run a marathon. His hair was disheveled, his capture weapon flaring with irritation. “Where the hell have you been?”
Kakashi gave an awkward wave, gesturing toward Obito with his cone. “Ice cream?”
Aizawa’s eye twitched, his frustration clear. “You just…left me there. With a corpse!”
Kakashi blinked innocently, gesturing at Obito. “It was an old friend. We had… catching up to do.”
Aizawa crossed his arms, visibly unimpressed. “You don’t just disappear with a strage man for ice cream.”
Obito grinned, finishing off the last of his cone with a shrug. “Maybe you just need to relax, Mr. Eraserhead.”
Aizawa narrowed his eyes, taking in Obito’s smug grin and the casual way he leaned against Kakashi, as if they were just two friends without a care in the world. “And you, you just killed someone, i'm going to arrest you.”
“Oh...bye” Obito replied with a mischievous gleam in his eye, Kamui whirling him out of existence.
Kakashi shook his head, amusement glinting in his eyes as he finished off his cone. Somehow, even in this world, Obito was still as unpredictable as ever—and something about that made Kakashi strangely happy.
Aizawa on the other hand, was fuming.
