It's completely normal for Jason to wake up before Leo. In fact, in almost ten years of being together (eight of those years have been living together and almost two years of marriage), Jason can count the times Leo has woken up before him on one hand. This morning, Jason wakes up slowly, the sun is just starting rising. He's always woken up with the sun, has since he was a little kid. He reaches over to the side of the bed, expected to feel the very warm body of his husband.
Instead of the comforting warmth, his hand hits cold sheets. Jason opens his eyes, sitting up and staring at Leo's empty spot on the bed.
He lays back down, heart thumping anxiously in his chest. Leo was fine. He's probably with the baby. Jason gets up, tugging a shirt and socks on and gliding down the hallway.
Leo is sprawled out on the ground, face inches away from three month old Esperanza, who is on her tummy staring at Leo with wide dark eyes. She's wearing a neon pink outfit and has a big bow in her hair.
"And then, daddy wanted me to tell Zethes I wasn't a fire guy. Everything about me screams fire guy." Leo huffs, the action blows air onto Esperanza's face and she bursts into peals of laughter. Leo grins at the noise. "Anyways, we argued back and forth about something and then we met Khione." He deepens his voice and Esperanza wobbles in surprise, eyes getting wider. "She was crazy. She separated us and made daddy and Auntie Piper go meet her dad, I wasn't allowed because I have fire powers. But, ugh, she was so pretty."
Esperanza blows a spit bubble right into Leo's face and he wrinkles his nose and wipes off his face with the collar of his shirt.
"Eww. Okay, okay, I'll stick with talking about my crush on your dad." He grumbles.
"Aww, you had a crush on me?"
Leo startles and Jason would feel bad if the sudden movement and gasps that escaped his mouth didn't make their daughter burst into laughter. The noise makes someone in Jason's chest warm and he takes a few steps to sit on the floor beside where Leo is laying on his stomach.
"Jason!" Leo screeches, placing a hand on his heart dramatically, he rolls over and pretends the die. Esperanza continues to giggle.
"Good morning, loves." Jason scoops up his daughter and cradles her close to his chest. He then leans over and gives Leo a quick peck.
Leo is scowling. "You interrupted out storytime."
Jason lays down and puts his head on Leo's stomach, Esperanza lays on his chest, staring at both of her parents.
"I'll tell a story. Once upon a time there was a child of Zeus named Jason Grace and he woke up all alone in his and his husband's bed."
Leo swats at Jason's head. "You're too codependent."
"Anza, your papa is falling out of love with me."
Leo rolls his eyes. "If you don't give me my baby back, I'm going to."
Jason tilts his head toward Esperanza as if to say "I told you so". She babbles and kicks contentedly.
"She's my baby too." Jason gently but dramatically wraps the baby in his arms. "My lovely, lovely girl."
Leo humphs and holds out his arms. "I need to finish my story. We haven't even gotten to the fun part where we fought each other."
Jason raises an eyebrow but reluctantly hands Esperanza over to Leo. "Fun?"
"Fun storytelling. It's like a telenovela."
Jason nods, a little incredulous. "If you say so."
Leo doesn't continue the story, instead he switches to holding Esperanza in a sitting position and making random noises that capture her attention. She tries to copy him but it mostly involves spit flying all over his face.
"So slobbery." Leo complains. "At least you have a windshield against this." He gently taps Jason's glasses with a knuckle. Jason smiles.
"I guess it's a benefit of being unable to see." He says.
Leo glances at the clock and scowls, he sits up, swatting at Jason's head and giving Esperanza a loud kiss. "I need to get ready for work." He explains, handing the baby off again. Jason takes her, laughing a little as she whimpers when Leo gets up. Leo falters and looks like he's about to call in sick but he shakes his head and heads to the bedroom to change.
"No kiss for me?" Jason pouts. Leo turns around and gives Jason a kiss.
"Don't distract me. Nyssa will kill me if I'm late because of baby snuggles again."
Jason cracks up and pulls himself to his feet. Esperanza whines a little and he sways soothingly. The action makes Esperanza forget her bout of separation anxiety from Leo and she's quickly back to the smiling baby he knows and loves.
Leo emerges from the bedroom, his work shirt on and a pair of dirty jeans. Jason offers to let him hold Esperanza again but he shakes his head.
"I'm greasy right now." He explains, he fills up a cup of water and stands on his tip toes to reach the basket of medicines. He takes his ADHD meds and grabs his keys.
"I'll probably be back for lunch. I love you." He kisses Jason another kiss. "Mwah! There's my baby."
She claps her hands and Leo grins. "Mwah! Mwah! Mwah!" He covers her face with quick kisses. Esperanza bursts into giggles and Leo and Jason follow suite.
Leo gets a mischievous look in his eye and before Jason can react, he places moth hands on the side of Jason's face and does the same thing to Jason.
Jason can't help the laughter that escapes him. "Leo, you're gonna be late."
Leo groans and pouts. "I just want to stay here and be a house husband with my baby all day." He complains, grabbing his wallet from where it sits on the counter.
"You get to be with her all day tomorrow." Jason points out. Leo slides his workboots on, still frowning.
"That's so far away."
Jason rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Be safe out there, Leo."
"Of course, Superman. I'm the safest." Leo kisses one more kiss to Jason's cheek as he heads out the door. "I'll see you this afternoon. Love ya."
Jason stands in the door and watches as Leo heads out.
"Isn't he the best?" Jason asks Esperanza. She coos and claps her hand in what could be agreement but is probably just her being a baby and liking to make random sounds 24/7. Jason decides to take it as agreement though, he ruffles her hair. "He's my favorite person. After you, of course."
Esperanza just claps again and Jason smiles.
