Chapter 1: The Heist at Chiyoda Art Museum

The Chiyoda Art Museum was a quiet fortress in the dark. Grand pillars cast long shadows across the main hall, and the gleam of priceless treasures lay behind thick glass and laser grids, guarded by cutting-edge security and one vigilant task force. It was no place for intruders—or so they thought.

But tonight, the museum had a visitor who lived for these challenges.

Kaito Kuroba—better known to the world as Kaito Kid—stood on the roof, his cape billowing in the cool night breeze, and looked down at his target: the Heart of Zenda, a sapphire as large as his palm and rumored to hold mysterious powers. The legend didn’t matter to him, but the jewel’s beauty did. More importantly, his father’s legacy mattered. Every heist was a tribute, a continuation of the legacy of the original Kid, and Kaito never backed down from a challenge.

He slipped through an open window, silent as a shadow, and began moving through the museum’s interior. The familiar thrill rushed through his veins as he navigated through the security systems he’d memorized during his meticulous planning. Ducking behind a column, he heard a faint click in the silence. He froze, listening.

Footsteps. Kaito tensed, just for a second, before relaxing into his usual confident smirk. It had to be him.

Out of the darkness, a familiar figure in blue emerged: a boy with sharp eyes and an intensity that no amount of disguising could mask.

“Couldn’t stay away, Tantei-kun?” Kaito whispered, just loud enough for Conan Edogawa to hear.

Conan didn’t look fazed, his piercing gaze focused entirely on Kaito. “I’m just here to make sure you don’t get too comfortable, Kid.”

Kaito chuckled. Conan always played the part of the persistent detective. “It’s a good thing you’re here then. I’d hate for my heists to start feeling too easy.”

But as he moved closer to the sapphire, a sudden unease flickered across Conan’s face. Kaito caught the change and paused, narrowing his eyes. Conan wasn’t usually this tense during their games. Had he noticed something?

“Kid,” Conan’s voice was almost too quiet to hear, “if I were you, I’d think twice before touching that gem.”

The warning threw Kaito off guard. Conan wasn’t taunting him; he was genuinely warning him. And that was enough to make Kaito pause, just long enough to feel a prickle of unease.

That pause saved him.

The moment he hesitated, the museum’s lights blazed on, and Nakamori’s voice boomed across the hall.

“Kaito Kid! You’re surrounded! Surrender now and reveal your face!”

In an instant, the museum’s silence was shattered. Kaito barely had time to throw up a gloved hand to shield his eyes. Police officers appeared at every exit, blocking his usual routes, their weapons drawn and ready.

Conan shifted beside him, his expression grim. “This isn’t one of Nakamori-keibu’s usual setups, Kid. They’re serious this time.”

Kaito smirked, masking the hint of fear curling in his gut. “Good thing I always have a Plan B.”

But as he scanned the exits, a sinking realization settled in. All his typical escape routes were blocked, and even Conan’s usual calm gaze held a hint of unease. The plan was tighter, more relentless than Nakamori-keibu’s usual tactics. Kaito had no choice but to risk an escape through the center of the hall, a strategy that could end badly if his timing was even a second off.

Still, he was Kaito Kid. If he was going down, he’d go down with a flourish.

With a quick flick of his wrist, he tossed a smoke bomb, filling the room with a cloud of white. Amid the chaos, he darted forward, leaping onto one of the glass cases, aiming for the high skylight he’d noticed earlier.

But just as he reached the center of the hall, he felt a hand grip his shoulder, firm and urgent.

“Wait,” Conan’s voice was a low whisper beside him. “I know you want to run, but think this through. They’re watching for you.”

Kaito met Conan’s gaze, startled to find a depth of worry there that he’d never seen before. For once, it seemed Conan wasn’t playing detective; he was trying to protect him. Before Kaito could speak, Conan released him, slipping something small and metallic into his hand—a flash bomb, one of Conan’s own gadgets.

“Trust me,” Conan murmured. “Just this once.”

Kaito hesitated, feeling the weight of Conan’s trust settle over him. With a slight nod, he activated the flash bomb, throwing it toward the ground. In the split second of blinding light that followed, he felt Conan grab his arm and tug him to the side, leading him toward a smaller door that Kaito hadn’t planned on using. Together, they slipped out of the main hall, evading the police just long enough to escape through a back exit.

They didn’t stop running until they’d put several blocks between them and the museum. At last, they found a small alley, hidden from view, and slowed to a halt, gasping for breath.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The adrenaline still coursed through Kaito’s veins, but the reality of what had almost happened began to settle in. If Conan hadn’t intervened, he would have been caught. And for Kaito, being caught meant losing everything—his freedom, his secrets, his entire reason for being Kid.

“Why did you help me?” he finally asked, his voice quieter than usual.

Conan looked away, something complicated flickering in his eyes. “Let’s just say… I don’t think catching you tonight would have felt right.”

Kaito studied him, taken aback by the answer. “You surprise me, Tantei-kun. I never thought you’d be the type to let a thief get away.”

Conan shrugged, an unreadable expression crossing his face. “Maybe I’m starting to think there’s more to you than just being a thief.”

Kaito chuckled, but the sound was softer, almost vulnerable. “Careful, or I’ll start to think you actually care.”

Conan didn’t respond, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond Kaito’s shoulder. In that moment, a strange feeling settled between them—an understanding, unspoken and fragile. For the first time, Kaito felt as if Conan wasn’t just an opponent or an adversary; he was someone who, perhaps, understood him in a way no one else did.

And maybe, just maybe, that understanding meant something.

But before Kaito could dwell on it, a sound broke the silence. Footsteps approached, and Kaito’s heart leapt in his chest. Someone was coming. He grabbed Conan’s arm, pulling him deeper into the shadows just as the figure rounded the corner.

Saguru Hakuba stepped into view, his sharp gaze scanning the alley. He hadn’t seen them, but the look on his face was determined, intense, as if he sensed their presence.

Kaito held his breath, watching as Hakuba’s eyes swept over their hiding spot, missing them by inches. After a long, tense moment, he turned and left, his footsteps fading into the night.

Only when he was gone did Kaito let out a shaky breath. He felt Conan’s gaze on him and turned to see the detective’s usual sharp stare replaced by something softer, almost concerned.

“We need to get out of here,” Conan said quietly. “This isn’t over.”

Kaito nodded, feeling an unfamiliar weight in his chest—a blend of relief, gratitude, and something he couldn’t quite name. He gave Conan a final, lingering look before slipping into the darkness, leaving the boy detective standing alone in the empty alley.

Notes:

I've never written a character like Kaito Kid, its fun to try to understand his thought process. I hope I can write him. See you next sunday.
