    Summary

When a violent storm sinks their whaling ship, the four surviving souls—a young man in search of adventure, his big brother who has sworn to protect him, a captain at the end of a long career at sea, and a worldly first mate who has fallen from grace—each face a reckoning: How far will I go to stay alive?

Now dying in a tuberculosis ward, Mate is haunted by the ghosts of the other three men he shared the dinghy with. Resigned to die he finds a confidant in a nurse who may need to hear his story just as much as he needs to tell it. Once again faced with a reckoning, what will Mate reveal about his past to illuminate his dwindling life, and will he ever see outside of the ward again?

This is an interpretation of the Broadway musical, full of Avett Brothers lyrics, both from the show and from songs not included, its purpose is to flesh out this short and stunning musical through my singular perception of the characters fascinating motivations.
