Work Text:

J slowed his walk to the dorm rooms, trying to remember where Min’s room was. Was it on the right side or the left? Right, right? Oh, haha, that was funny.

It was weird. They’d been best friends since the beginning of their time at Hope’s Peak. They’d gotten all the same classes together, hung out every night...

Well, nearly every night. Min had stopped showing up, and to be fair, J had stopped asking long before that. He either hung out with Alex or went straight to bed.

J shrugs it off, It’s probably just on the tip of my tongue.

But they were particularly confused— why would Min want to talk all of the sudden? J almost brushed it off for a lunch date with Ro until Min said that she needed him there. Needed.

The word told J that it was serious, though he was annoyed. What could be so important? Why couldn’t she tell them after?

J  accidentally walked past Min’s room. The only reason they didn’t walk past it completely was because he recognized her name in big, purple, glittery letters. He smiled to himself, remembering when Arei gave it to Min. She was surprised... and concerned by all the glitter that was spilling on it and onto their cafeteria table.

J didn’t think Min liked it because of her teacher instincts. She did if she was willing to replace her old name tag with it.

He opened Min’s door, not even bothering to knock. He didn’t have to, right? They were best friends.
Min was pacing the width of her room, biting her thumbnail without actually damaging it. When the door opened, she lifted her head and stared at J in shocked silence, “...You came.”

J shrugged, “You asked me to come. Why wouldn’t I?”

Mins face drops into annoyance, but she’s quick to brush it off, “Yes— you’re right. How was your morning, J?”

“Did... you ask me to come all this way for a simple question? It was fine, I guess. I was going to go out for lunch with Ro before you texted me. Can you hurry this up? I can still make it if I text her in five minutes.”

Min ran a hand through her bangs, teeth gritting. What did Min have to be pissed for?! She hated small talk, and knew her and J’s friendship was way beyond it!

“...Fine, I’ll make it quick. I never want you to speak to me again.”

J was shocked, momentarily flailing around as his arms started moving, but his legs didn’t, so he was pressed up against the wall until he could get his mind to think. They try to force out a question, but choke on their spit, “Ack— the fuck? I never took you as an April Fools person, so I’m going to take you seriously. What the hell did I do?! ”

“ What did you do?” Min countered. “Think about that for a minute.”

J racked his brain, but he couldn’t find anything. He threw his hands up in unfairness, “I can’t think of a single thing! Stop playing around.”

Min grinds her teeth. Her body shook with a sob. It took a little away from J’s anger, but— it wasn’t a real answer.

“Min! Stop crying and tell me already!”

“Stop, J! Alex is starting to rub off on you— y- you would have never told someone to stop crying so aggressively...”

“How do you know that?” J counters, taking a step towards her sobbing form. “You don’t know anything about  me.”

Min shakes her head sadly and clutches her stomach like she’s struggling to breathe. After a second J realizes she is. Min is having a panic attack.

“Min, are you— hey, I’m sorry—“

“Don’t... touch... me,” Min says through panicked breaths. “Listen to yourself. You’re turning into him. We bonded over what an asshole he was when we got here, and he hasn’t changed.”

J takes a step away from her, expression hardening again, “Is that why you’re doing this? Because you’re jealous of him.”

Min shakes her head again, laughing breathlessly with hysteria, “Jealous? No. Oh God, no. Haha. What a funny thought. No. I’m doing it because you have changed. You’re selfish, and you’ve been ignoring me.”

“Are you serious?!” J shouts, balling their fists in anger. Selfish? He was selfish?! Min was name-calling! “If you felt ignored, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried! You kept putting this conversation off to hang out with Alex! When we hang out, you only ever talk about your problems, or shit-talk everyone else here! You call me your best friend, but you won’t listen to me! Do you remember when I told you I liked Arei?!”

“Min, slow down—“

“No, because you started complaining about how she took the last of the leftovers! You threw a fit at her and she felt really bad about it. I told you— I told you that I was going ask her out, but you never asked what she ended up saying!”

“Min—“

“She said yes! And you never remembered! You never cared! We’ve been dating for a week and you had no idea!—"

J grabbed Min by the collar of her jacket and pressed his lips to hers in a panic. He wasn’t sure what he was doing— in the back of his mind J knew this was two types of wrong, but he didn’t care. He didn’t like Min that way, but he didn’t care. He wouldn’t be hurt if he and Min had drifted away naturally, but he didn’t care about that either.

Min had hurt his ego. He just needed her to love hi—
Min had shown him something he didn’t see, something he could improve on. And he was so, so sorry.

She shoves him off of her, “Get out.”

“Min, wait. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”

“GET OUT!” Min shrieks, pointing towards the door again.

“NO!” J countered. “Fucking listen to m—“

“GET THE HELL OUT, J, BEFORE I MAKE YOU.”

J immediately stopped. They weren’t scared of her. Pff, Min? No. All he could think of her now was an asshole. An ungrateful bitch. J shakes his head and walks out the door.
