Goodbye, Summer

Summary:

In which I rewrote Dipper’s ending monologue at the end of the finale so it’s Mabel saying it instead, plus a rewrite of the ending bus scene so the goodbye note is to both twins.

Work Text:

“Can it, Soos!”

Mabel snorted, then turned to Pacifica, opening her arms for a hug. Pacifica blinked, surprise breaking her cool facade.

“Really?” Pacifica asked.

“Yeah, girl,” Mabel promised. “You’ve changed.”

Pacifica’s eyes were suddenly very shiny. She sniffed, then threw herself in Mabel’s arms. Mabel squeezed her tight, rocking exaggeratedly back and forth. Pacifica giggled.

“Hey, girl,” Mabel murmured quietly so only Pacifica could hear. “I’m glad you let me in. I’m glad we’re friends now.”

Pacifica pulled away, but kept close to Mabel. She rubbed her eyes on her expensive sleeve. “Yeah. You’re lucky I’m letting you be my friend. Yeah, girl.”

Mabel laughed. “Yeah, girl!”

Nearby, Wendy pulled Dipper over. “Hey,” she said. “You mean a lot to me, man. Like---platonically. Little brother mean a lot to me. But the point is; you mean a lot to me.”

Dipper’s chest felt like it would burst. “You too,” he managed to say.

She pulled him into a hug, and Dipper hugged her back. Not as a crush, not as a potential girlfriend, not as a love interest, but as a friend. As someone he cared about.

Wendy pulled away, and then swapped her and Dipper’s hats. “Something to remember me by,” she grinned, ruffling Dipper’s hair through her Ushanka.

Then she stood up. “Hey, Mabel!” she called. The younger girl looked over, then patted Pacifica’s shoulder before heading over.

Wendy pulled an envelope out of her pocket and handed it to the younger Pines twins. “Read it the next time you two miss Gravity Falls.”

Dipper and Mabel grinned. Mabel and Wendy hugged one last time, and then it was time to leave. Grunkles Stan and Ford threatened the bus driver to let Waddles on the bus, and everyone ran along the road, waving to Dipper and Mabel. They waved back, and then the bus was faster.

They two sat back, leaning on each other.

If you've ever taken a road trip through the Pacific Northwest, you've probably seen a bumper sticker for a place called Gravity Falls.

It’s not on any maps---believe me, I’ve looked. And looked, and looked, and looked! It’s an urban legend, but more, somehow…

It’s like a myth. Most people think it is.

But if you’re curious, don’t just sit on your tush and wonder.

Dipper and Mabel looked at each other.

Take a trip. Explore. Step outside of your comfort zone. You’ll grow, like a seed in the right soil.

Mabel pulled out the envelope. Together, they tore it open and shook the letter out.

Find it.

As they read it, they smiled.

It’s out there somewhere in the woods, waiting for new adventurers.

See you next summer!
