Obi-Wan could never sleep in, he was always up with the sun, or before. Probably his many years of routine as a Jedi. He’d always liked structure, order and stability. Sleeping the morning away was something he was incapable of doing. Even on vacation.
His eyes opened at 5:57 am, and he felt a rush of excitement. One year, it’d gone by so quickly. After the war, all the chaos and heartbreak, he never imagined he could be so happy.
Obi-Wan rolled over and propped himself up on his elbow, the bed was enormous with many fluffy pillows and a thick comforter, despite the mild weather.
“Happy Anniversary,” he pressed a kiss against the side of Anakin’s neck.
“What time is it?” came the grumbly reply. Anakin was able to get up on time if needed, but he loved sleeping in. Obi-Wan felt a bit bad for disturbing him, but he was just so excited.
“Do you want to take a walk with me?” Obi-Wan asked, he wrapped his arm around Anakin’s torso and kissed him again.
“Do I look like I wanna?” he burrowed under the covers dragging Obi-Wan down with him. In the night Anakin had stolen all the blankets, (a common occurrence) Obi-Wan didn’t mind, the sheet was enough for him in the summertime. Anakin sighed and held onto Obi-Wan’s arm, content to lie under the mountain of blankets with Obi-Wan pressed up against his back. He was so warm and Obi-Wan was already starting to overheat.
“The sunrise off the water will be a beautiful sight,” Obi-Wan said, knowing he had very little chance of convincing Anakin out of bed this early. He kissed his neck again and nipped his earlobe.
“I got a beautiful sight right here you can look at,” Anakin mumbled, grinding his butt teasingly against Obi-Wan’s hips.
“Now really Anakin,” Obi-Wan gasped in mock horror, “no need to be uncouth,”
“I’m couth when I need to be, please let me sleep.” he let go of Obi-Wan’s arm and his body went slack. Obi-Wan sat up and stroked Anakin’s hair as he sunk into a deep sleep.
He left Anakin to sleep and spent the morning walking by himself around Varykino Villa. The Naboo sun shone brilliantly but a pleasant cool breeze coming off the water prevented it from being uncomfortably hot.
He walked along the sandy beach, bare feet in the damp sand.
Everyone was here on Naboo with them, staying at Padme’s huge Villa in Lake Country. His one year anniversary with Anakin was also the anniversary of the end of the war and the twins first birthday. Their closest friends had all gathered to celebrate together.
The final battle, they had both thought each other dead. But when the dust settled and they’d found each other drenched in blood and ash, they’d clung like dying men and kissed desperately. Giving in to unspoken desires, finally realizing the depths of their mutual love. They had been together since then, together in every sense of the word. Mind, body and soul.
The year had passed quickly, peace finally settling over the galaxy and Obi-Wan’s heart.
It hadn’t been easy, Anakin still woke up most nights screaming. Nightmares of the past or visions of an alternate future so horrible he could hardly articulate it. Obi-Wan saw glimpses and they were beyond devastating, all he could do was hold his crying lover and tell him everything was ok. It didn’t happen that way. They were ok, they were all alive, everything was ok.
Padme had understood thankfully, and they all saw each other a lot. The three of them watched as the twins grew and changed rapidly, already showing signs of force sensitivity.
They made it work, they had too, anything was better than being apart.
Anakin was up when Obi-Wan returned from his walk, though he did look tired still and only wore his sleep pants. He was in the kitchen with Padme holding Luke and Leia, while she prepared pancakes. Such a domestic scene. Caf was brewing and the sounds of sizzling grease and the babies babbling was almost peaceful.
Until,
“Oww!”
Padme laughed.
“Let me help,” Obi-Wan chuckled, both twins were furiously yanking Anakin’s long hair.
“My savior,” Anakin said, pushing Luke into Obi-Wan’s outstretched arms.
Obi-Wan held the squirming boy out of his beard's reach, Luke looking eager to yank that too. He deposited him in a highchair and turned to help his boyfriend from the other small menace. Leia had both hands gripped tight in Anakin’s long tangled curls.
“Hold still,” Obi-Wan admonished as Anakin jerked and hissed, “you should probably cut your hair darling,” he finally opened both small fists and placed Leia in the highchair next to her brother.
“You like my hair,” Anakin said, he gathered his wild curls and tied them back in a messy ponytail.
“Caf?” he lifted the pitcher,
“Thank you dear one,” Obi-Wan held out his mug and Anakin poured, smiling sweetly. He made Padme one and himself before sitting next to his children.
“I was thinking we could all do a beach day,” Padme said as she set a platter of steaming pancakes on the table, “the weather is so gorgeous and everyone can mingle and relax.”
“Sounds good,” Anakin said, his mouth full of pancake.
“That’s a great idea,” Obi-Wan agreed, as he sipped his caf.
Padme began to cut pancakes and fruit up for the twins,
“I’ll pack a lunch, Ahsoka messaged that she’s almost here,” she said.
Quinlan staggered into the kitchen groaning dramatically wearing only his underwear,
“I’m so hungover,” he announced before opening the fridge and retrieving a bottle of beer.
“Vos put on some clothes in front of the lady,” Obi-Wan admonished, rolling his eyes as Quinlan chugged the whole bottle. He set the empty bottle down and belched loudly, the twins both laughed.
“Anakin’s naked, I can be too.” Quinlan said petulantly, strolling around the kitchen.
“Hey!” Anakin said, Obi-Wan chuckled at how offended he looked, “I’m wearing pants, you are practically spilling out of those! Are those womens underwear?”
“Like what you see?” Quinlan smirked, he took a handful of pancakes and retreated onto the balcony.
“I apologize on his behalf,” Obi-Wan said, sometimes he couldn't fathom how Quinlan was one of his friends, they were so wildly different.
“Don't worry Obi-Wan, it takes more than that to scandalize me,” Padme said as she wiped Luke's sticky face.
“Well speak for yourself, I'm thoroughly scandalized,” Anakin said.
Padme giggled and turned back to the stove and began flipping another batch of pancakes. The twins were quietly eating and Anakin began rubbing a bare foot up Obi-Wan’s leg under the table.
“Behave,” Obi-Wan said quietly, reaching down and swatting the offending appendage away. But he smiled into his caf, he adored seeing this carefree version of Anakin and having everyone here happy.
Cody emerged from the depths of the Villa and yawned,
“Happy Anniversary lovebirds,” he said and sat down beside Obi-Wan, “Thanks,” Obi-Wan said, clapping his shoulder. Anakin blushed and began choking, but quickly recovered, “and happy birthday angels,” Cody continued in a baby voice. He leaned closer to the twins and began pulling faces and wiggling his fingers around.
Quinlan returned from the balcony whistling and grabbed a few more pancakes.
The rest of the guests and staff seemed to be awake now, talking and movement could be heard in the halls and upstairs. The doorbell rang and a few minutes later Rex and Ahsoka were ushered into the kitchen by one of Padme’s handmaids.
“Guys!” Anakin shouted, he sprung up and hugged them both simultaneously as Obi-Wan fondly observed. He loved seeing him happy and excited after all the pain he’d endured over the years. Obi-Wan was doing everything in his power now to shield Anakin, to care for him, he deserved happiness.
Ashoka was excitedly describing their journey, (which seemed to include some very risky piloting). Mace Windu and Yoda both drifted into the kitchen and everyone was chattering amicably.
Padme finally sat down and began to eat herself,
“Dig in while it’s hot,” she said. There was a loud scraping of chairs and dishes clanking as everyone seated themselves and began to eat.
They’d taken a few speeders to the other side of the island where there were long stretches of sandy beach and rolling fields of green grass and wildflowers. The sun was beating down on the calm water and not a cloud marred the wide blue sky.
Anakin and Rex carried the packs of food and drinks. Both of them were wearing black shorts, Anakin’s considerably shorter. Their many scars on display. Obi-Wan smiled to himself watching them jostling and teasing each other as they balanced the heavy packs and waddled through the sand.
Padme carried Leia and several towels, a huge hat obscuring her face. Obi-Wan held Luke who was wiggling and shrieking with glee, he’d managed to yank Obi-Wan’s beard a few times.
It took awhile to set out all the towels and construct some umbrellas for a bit of shade. Obi-Wan had worn a thin long sleeved shirt, his fair skin prone to burning.
Anakin came jogging over and flopped down on Obi-Wan’s towel, kicking up sand and rumpling it.
“Here, Padme said we should put this on,” Anakin said, handing over a tube of SPF 1138 sun shield gel. He lay on his stomach and peered over his shoulder, Obi-Wan squirted the gel into his hands and rubbed them together to warm it up. He began to gently rub it over Anakin’s back, spreading the gel over muscle and raised scars. It would have been sensual, but for Anakin squawking and laughing every time he touched his ribs and the sides of his stomach.
“I’m not trying to tickle you,” he said exasperated, as Anakin thrashed around kicking up sand, “get up.” Anakin sat up, his face red from laughing and Obi-Wan spread the last bit of gel onto his face, smoothing it over his cheekbones.
“I’m getting back at you for that torture,” Anakin said, squirting out way too much and applying it himself to his chest and belly.
“You will try,” Obi-Wan said cheekily as he removed his shirt.
Anakin squatted behind him, “Are you not afraid?” he whispered before sinking down to his knees and pressing his chest tight against Obi-Wan’s back, “You should be.”
He hooked his gloved mechanical forearm over Obi-Wan’s throat pulling him back and began dancing his gel covered fingers over Obi-Wan’s ribs. While it didn’t induce any laughter, Obi-Wan was not ticklish in the least, the position and Anakin’s heavy breathing in his ear began to turn him on.
“Anakin, just put the gel on my back please,”
“Fine,” he grumbled in defeat and released him. Obi-Wan heard some fumbling, then this sound of the cap opening before he felt cool gel being spread over his shoulders and down his back.
When they had sufficiently covered all their exposed skin they sat side by side and watched the water as it soaked in.
Quinlan was already splashing around in the water hooting and showing off. Padme and Ashoka were sitting quietly together with the twins and everyone else was off in the distance looking like they were starting a game of dodgeball.
Obi-Wan leaned over and kissed Anakin, he seemed surprised but enthusiastically participated.
“I love you,” Anakin said when they broke the kiss, staring affectionately.
“I love you, come, let’s walk together,” Obi-Wan stood up and stretched, Anakin got up and Obi-Wan took his hand and they strolled off.
“Ooooh where are you two going?” they heard Quinlan taunting from the water, Anakin laughed and squeezed Obi-Wan’s hand affectionately.
They walked in silence down the beach, the opposite direction of everyone else. Surrounded by the sound of crashing waves, birds and the distant laughing and shouting of their peers.
Anakin seemed a little troubled, Obi-Wan was hoping to have a conversation and make sure he was ok.
But Anakin began to walk into the water,
“Come in with me?” he asked, “I’m getting hot,” he stood with the water lapping around his ankles, his hair gently moving with the wind and tan skin shiny in the bright sunlight.
“Alright, but don’t dunk my head under, I don’t want water in my ears,” Obi-Wan said and followed him in.
The water was warm with cool patches and seaweed occasionally tangling against their legs. They stopped at waist height and Anakin hugged him,
“I love you so much, thank you for putting up with me,” he said quietly.
“Hey, I don’t put up with you. I want to be with you, you know that, I love you,” Obi-Wan said, squeezing him tight. By now he should be used to Anakin’s bouts of insecurity, but it still hurt, he always did his best to reassure him.
Eventually Anakin let go, he smiled and dove underwater. Obi-Wan watched as he resurfaced a distance away flinging his hair back, it sat past his shoulders when wet and was the color of brandy.
Obi-Wan walked over, the water getting deeper, it was at his chest when he reached Anakin. They kissed, Anakin grabbed him underwater and pulled him until they were completely flush together.
“Master,” he moaned as Obi-Wan kissed his neck, Anakin only called him that now when they were intimate. Obi-Wan took his face in his hands and kissed his mouth, long and thorough, sucking at his tongue and nipping his lips. He broke the kiss,
“To be continued, tonight,” he said. Anakin was hard, breathing roughly, mouth open and his eyes half-lidded. He whined in disappointment.
They slowly walked back along the sand where the water lapped lazily at their feet.
Padme and Ahsoka were holding the twin’s hands and letting them splash their feet in the water. Anakin ran up excitedly, he squatted down and began to splash water up at them with a huge smile on his face.
Obi-Wan sat down on his towel and watched. Quinlan was rooting through the packs, finally he retrieved a few beers and took them over to where there was a half built sandcastle.
Rex, Cody, Kix, Appo, Fox and Fives were playing a heated game of dodgeball in the background and Yoda was trying to meditate a distance away, but his ears kept twitching with every noise.
Mace walked over and sat beside Obi-Wan, he looked out of place fully clothed and wearing a scowl (but it seemed to be from the bright sunlight and not a cantankerous mood, thankfully)
“You managed a year together, very impressive,” he said, managing to sound both friendly and condescending.
“Well we’ve navigated a lot more tumultuous things over the years, this is natural, easy,” Obi-Wan said, stroking his beard thoughtfully.
“Well I am glad you are happy my friend,” Mace said. They chatted a bit and Mace joined Yoda and they both attempted to meditate. Obi-Wan did believe in the benefits of meditation, but it seemed out of place on a rowdy beach. The two of them seemed to be putting a holier than thou show on.
The game had disbanded and everyone was staring up at the field, a large herd of Shaak were grazing. One had broken free of the herd and was nibbling the grass directly behind the sand, snorting and glancing warily at all the people with its small red eyes.
Ahsoka was holding the twins and they looked sleepy,
“I can’t believe they can stand, their bodies are so bulbous compared to their legs,” she said.
“They look so stupid,” Quinlan said, draining a beer, “it better stay away from my sand castle.”
“I can’t believe you rode one of those,” Padme said laughing and nudging Anakin with her elbow.
“I bet I still could!” Anakin said, Obi-Wan walked closer.
“If I recall you fell on your ass last time,” Padme said smirking,
“That was planned,” Anakin said, “I’m doing it.”
“Anakin, that’s not a good idea,” Obi-Wan warned, but Anakin was already creeping toward the enormous creature, Obi-Wan sighed.
Everyone watched as Anakin crept closer approaching from the rear before leaping up and straddling the creature. It immediately began to charge and buck. Obi-Wan tensed and watched nervously as Anakin lurched around managing to stay atop the creature. Of course Obi-Wan had seen him partaking in countless more dangerous things then riding an absurdly proportioned herbivore, still he worried.
Eventually it bucked him off, Anakin landing hard in the sand,
“That was harder than I remember,” he said breathlessly.
Obi-Wan helped him up,
“That was really very stupid darling, you could have been hurt,” he admonished, dusting the sand out of Anakin’s hair.
The guys began arguing who was going to try it next, but Padme interrupted.
“Let’s have lunch,” she said, “I’m sure some of you would like a beer or two before Quinlan drinks them all,” she took Luke from Ahsoka and everyone began trudging back to the towels and umbrellas.
It took awhile to unpack the food and portion it out. But eventually everyone had a sandwich, some fruit and a few cold beers.
“I brought these to celebrate, there is a cake at home also, but i’m afraid they got a bit smooshed,” Padme said as she opened a box and began handing out cupcakes.
They were indeed a bit squished, half had pink icing and half had blue. Obi-Wan took a careful bite but Anakin stuffed the whole thing in his mouth, getting frosting all over his nose and chin.
Quinlan was hovering around hoping for a second cupcake or more beer, but Padme was guarding the supplies.
“C’mon, one more,” he whined.
“No, you’ve had enough,” she said stubbornly, folding her arms and looking surprisingly imposing in her huge hat and short dress.
Obi-Wan finished half his cupcake and began to lick the pink frosting off Anakin’s face,
“Eww get a room guys,” Quinlan said, as he passed by. Taking advantage of Obi-Wan being distracted he stole his cupcake and half beer before running back to his sandcastle giggling.
Obi-Wan rolled his eyes,
“Why am I even surprised,” he said. Padme snuck them both another beer and cupcake each.
The twins were sleeping curled up in the shade and Anakin lay in Obi-Wan’s lap, almost everyone was lying quietly in the afternoon sun.
Obi-Wan finished his beer, absently stroking Anakin’s hair, it was crunchy from the saltwater and more wild then normal.
Ahsoka came over and lightly kicked Anakin with her bare foot, obviously pretending he was a corpse she was checking for signs of life.
“Come swim with us Skyguy, you can’t hide with Obi-Wan all day,” she said, Rex appeared behind her,
“C’mon,” he said, "I wanna swim with you guys, “Quinlan is being insufferable.”
Anakin grumbled nuzzling deeper into Obi-Wan’s lap,
“Can’t swim, we just ate.” he said, his voice muffled against Obi-Wan’s shirt.
“Well I said swim, I really mean splash around in the water,” Ahsoka clarified, her eyes wide and hopeful.
“Go on for a bit,” Obi-Wan said, “I’ve got a book,”
“Oh alright, force forbid a guy relax,” Anakin said goodnaturedly, he held his hands out and Rex and Ahsoka lugged him up.
Obi-Wan watched the three of them wander off chatting and laughing and then splashing around in the water.
Two of Padme’s handmaids had come down and were sitting with her and Luke, Leia was still asleep.
Quinlan was guarding his huge sandcastle, he’d incorporated the empty beer bottles into the towers.
Mace and Yoda had gone back to the Villa complaining it was too hot.
Everyone else was lying out on the sand.
Obi-Wan sat back further under his umbrella, he’d probably need another coating of sun shield. He did read a bit, occasionally watching the three figures jumping and splashing around in the water.
Some time later Obi-Wan must have dozed off. He woke to Rex stumbling over, his arm gripping Anakin under the armpits.
“What happened?” Obi-Wan asked, Rex put him down and squatted beside him.
Anakin was pale, hunched over and clutching his chest and stomach.
“Nothing happened, he was fine one minute and then… I’m guessing a panic attack.” Rex said.
Obi-Wan immediately recognized the familiar symptoms, though it had been many years since he’d witnessed Anakin having a full blown attack.
Anakin was breathing heavily and his hands were shaking.
“I'm s-sorry I'm ruining the day,” he gasped.
“It's ok, your not ruining anything, breathe,” Obi-Wan took both of Anakin’s shaking hands, his flesh hand cold and clammy, “breathe with me, you’re ok,”
Anakin was trying to breathe slower along with Obi-Wan but he kept gasping and panting harder,
“Everything is g-going too well,” he choked, “I just feel this dread, something bad is going to happen.” his face was flushed and sweat had broken out on his top lip and forehead.
Padme was throwing concerned glances their way, but she continued playing in the sand with Luke.
Rex kept a hand on Anakin's shoulder and he and Obi-Wan kept talking to him in low gentle voices. Ahsoka was standing a little in the distance looking worried.
After it finally seemed to subside Anakin clung to him and cried quietly for a while. Rex nodded at Obi-Wan and left them be.
“Nothing bad is going to happen, we’re ok, everything is ok,” Obi-Wan soothed, rubbing Anakin’s back.
Eventually Anakin pulled away, scooting further against the back of the umbrella, he looked exhausted.
Padme came over holding sleeping Leia,
“Why don’t you hold her for a bit,” she said, placing the wrapped bundle on Anakin’s chest, “holding them always makes me feel better,”
Anakin carefully cradled his daughter, fresh tears welling up and falling.
“Thanks Padme,” he smiled.
Obi-Wan left Anakin with Padme and walked toward the water, stretching his cramped legs a bit.
Cody came over,
“Is he ok now?” He asked,
Rex and Ahsoka came over as well,
“He’ll be ok,” Obi-Wan said.
“I’ve never seen him like that, he looked so scared,” Ahsoka said, her brow crinkled in worry. Despite all they had been through together, Obi-Wan had to remind himself that she was only seventeen years old.
“Well we’ve all been through a lot, Anakin especially, try not to worry young one,” Obi-Wan said, patting her shoulder.
Rex ushered her away, “I dare you to kick over Quinlan’s sand castle,” he said.
Cody snickered and slung an arm around Obi-Wan’s shoulders,
“Ever get tired of being there for everyone?” he asked.
“Never,” Obi-Wan said and he meant it. They watched the sinking sun over the water, the beautiful moment broken by an enraged howling from Quinlan.
“Oh dear,” Obi-Wan said, shaking his head.
That night they'd showered the sand from their hair and skin, Anakin's tan had deepened and Obi-Wan had a slight burn on his cheeks and shoulders.
He’d made love to Anakin and was now cradling him as he slept.
All in all it was a very enjoyable beach day with their friends, most of them were free to stay the whole summer. It would be good to relax here, they all needed some quiet and recuperation.
