Summary

One, two, three times. It reminded James of dying. Francis proceeded with his speech. ‘I didn’t see you as a burden then, in the sick bay, and my feelings did not change when you were allowed to move to Ross’s cabin. Neither did they in London. I wanted the best for you, hence my assumption the best lay in your family nest. Now I know I was grievously mistaken, you saw to it, my knowing of it, and I ask you here. Would you stay with me?’
‘For today?’
‘For as long as you like. I would take you indefinitely if I knew it was your heart’s desire.’
