    Summary

‘I don’t see it like that, and, please, don’t argue for I was there,’ Francis reached tentatively for James’s hand. James was sure it was clammy and unpleasant to touch, cold to boot as the evening chill began to settle, but Francis covered it nevertheless and stroked the expense of his palm with his thumb. One, two, three times. It reminded James of dying. Francis proceeded with his speech. ‘I didn’t see you as a burden then, in the sick bay, and my feelings did not change when you were allowed to move to Ross’s cabin. Neither did they in London. I wanted the best for you, hence my assumption the best lay in your family nest. Now I know I was grievously mistaken, you saw to it, my knowing of it, and I ask you here. Would you stay with me?’

    ‘For today?’

‘For as long as you like. I would take you indefinitely if I knew it was your heart’s desire.’

    Summary

This is a long shot, but if anyone can help me then I bet it’s this subreddit!

Believe me I have tried everything before posting this. You guys probably recognise me from ghosting around in your notifications — I live on this subreddit but haven’t really had the courage to post here before. But I’ve summoned up all my strength to finally write this (haha) because I — like I said — have tried everything!!!

Okay, so TLDR: I would love a transcript of JFJ’s episode of the UK Who Do You Think You Are, because I can’t find ANY version with subtitles here in Spain (I’m hard of hearing) and it is driving me crazy!

    Summary

“Would it not be best to let the press believe a friendship is afoot, instead of acting one out? These are only written words we’re speaking about, after all. We men know how easy it is to manipulate the tabloids these days.” He tried for a jovial tone that fell flat.

“Teams of photographers will be alerted of your joint whereabouts, and pictures will be taken. We will not be led astray by claims of false reporting.”

“This is false reporting, is it not?” Francis’ tone was bitter. Sir John paid no attention to it.

    Summary

“I would hazard a guess that you are in fact quite good with them–with children,” James says.

Francis makes a harumphing noise but does not disagree, which is as close to a confirmation as James is likely to get.

Something feels as if it clicks, subtly, into place inside him. A delicious, tingly warmth spreads throughout his body.

He emphatically declines to investigate the feeling.

This is a story about families—the ones we find, the ones we choose, and the ones we make.

It is also a story of James Fitzjames absolutely gagging to get knocked up by one Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier

    Summary

Once they stepped ashore, a fey dark-haired man burst through the crowd a few heads down from Jane Franklin. When Fitzjames saw his brother, he startled, and when Will surged forward in the first press of the crowds around the returned—elfin face wet with tears as he swept James into a fierce embrace—only then did Fitzjames release his grip on Francis’s arm.

Only then did Francis feel as if he could step away at last.

    Summary

James knew then, with a devastating certainty, that there was nothing awaiting him in England. This shell of a man he had become, or rather what yolk had run out once the shell was broken, had no friends there. All who once knew him would look at him with this same pity, and excuse themselves from his company. He no longer had anything to offer them to keep them by his side.

A story about longing and belonging.

    Summary

Or, The Convalescence of James Fitzjames

In another timeline, two dozen of Sir John Franklin's men returned from the Arctic. In this timeline, James Fitzjames didn't die. But his great gilded life has collapsed in the wake of the disastrous expedition. Haunted by his failures and the deaths of his men, harrowed by the trauma he has suffered, he takes refuge with his foster-brother's family in Brighton.

    Break, break, break,
On thy cold gray stones, O Sea!
And I would that my tongue could utter
The thoughts that arise in me.

O, well for the fisherman's boy,
That he shouts with his sister at play!
O, well for the sailor lad,
That he sings in his boat on the bay!

And the stately ships go on
         To their haven under the hill;
But O for the touch of a vanish'd hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!

    Break, break, break
At the foot of thy crags, O Sea!
But the tender grace of a day that is dead
Will never come back to me.

“And where is Francis in all this?”

The worry was evident in Ross’s voice and Fitzjames had to make an effort to not grimace. “Ill,” he said at last. “Too ill to command."

    Summary

His inner compass had pointed toward James as its true north since they’d met in China in ’42. It was that selfsame impulse to be near him that had Henry accepting a post as James’ second aboard the Clio. The same impulse that had him following James to the arctic—literally to the ends of the earth. Following him to Brighton hardly signified in the grand scheme of distances he’d traveled for the man.

After his affair with Sophia Cracroft sours and Lady Franklin refuses his offer to captain the recovery expedition of Sir John's remains, Henry impulsively travels to Brighton to see James, whom he hasn't spoken to in months.
