Summary
The court-martial of the survivors of the Franklin Expedition takes place in an atmosphere of oppressive failure. Fairholme, who against the odds did find the walkout party, is essentially untouchable; James is too ill to be tried; Dundy is apparently too loved-up to think. Francis is a convenient scapegoat for everything that the public now know went very, very wrong (as well as what they don't). He faces a death sentence - but not if James can help it. Desperate times call for desperate measures (Victorian newspaper pastiche).

Summary
“I would hazard a guess that you are in fact quite good with them–with children,” James says.
Francis makes a harumphing noise but does not disagree, which is as close to a confirmation as James is likely to get.
Something feels as if it clicks, subtly, into place inside him. A delicious, tingly warmth spreads throughout his body.
He emphatically declines to investigate the feeling.

Summary
Or, The Convalescence of James Fitzjames
In another timeline, two dozen of Sir John Franklin's men returned from the Arctic. In this timeline, James Fitzjames didn't die. But his great gilded life has collapsed in the wake of the disastrous expedition. Haunted by his failures and the deaths of his men, harrowed by the trauma he has suffered, he takes refuge with his foster-brother's family in Brighton.
Break, break, break,
On thy cold gray stones, O Sea!
And I would that my tongue could utter
The thoughts that arise in me.O, well for the fisherman's boy,
That he shouts with his sister at play!
O, well for the sailor lad,
That he sings in his boat on the bay!And the stately ships go on
To their haven under the hill;
But O for the touch of a vanish'd hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!Break, break, break
At the foot of thy crags, O Sea!
But the tender grace of a day that is dead
Will never come back to me.—Alfred, Lord Tennyson
