The Flying Race

Summary:

Sam decides to hang out with Thor and Tony instead of with his best friend, Steve.

Work Text:

One day, Steve Rogers was very excited for some reason.

“Hooray!” he said. “My friend is coming over to visit today!”

“Oh, no!” Tony Stark said. “It isn’t your communist friend, is it?”

"No, it's not Bucky!” Steve said. “It's my other friend, Sam Wilson!"

“Oh, The Falcon! Yeah, I know him. Okay, have fun!”
Tony started to walk away, but stopped when he heard Sam’s voice.

“Steve!” Sam called. “I’m here!”
“Awesome!” Steve said. “Now we can hang out together all day long!”

“Hey! The Falcon! How are you?” Tony said.

"Great! How about you? Would you like to have a flying race with me?"

“Sure!” Tony said. “But I will totally win!”

"Alright! Let's go! First one to reach the park wins!" Sam said.

“WHAT?!” Steve roared. “I thought you were here to hang out with me, Sam!”

“I changed my mind,” Sam said tersely.

"Come on! At least let me join you guys! Please!" Steve whined.

"We're having a flying race!” Sam said. “Unless you can fly, you can't join us!"

“BOO!” Steve said. “You guys are so unfair!”

Thor entered the room.

“I can fly,” he said.

“Cool!” Sam said. “Wanna join us?”

“Sure! I just have to… uh… get my hammer!”
Thor said, running back out of the room.

"What does he need a hammer for?!" Sam asked.

“Ugh… he thinks it will help him fly,” Tony said.
“That’s dumb!” Sam scoffed. “A hammer will only weigh him down!"
“I know!” Tony laughed. “He’s so stupid!”
“Ha!” Sam said. “Now, I will win for sure!”
“What?! Obviously, I'm gonna win! My suit is way faster than your silly little bird wings!"
“What makes you say that?”
“Two words: Rocket Boots.”

Thor returned with his hand behind his back.

"Oh! Hey, big buddy! Are you ready to race now?" Sam asked him.

“Y-yes,” Thor said. “I’m ready.”

Tony laughed.
“Where is your special hammer, dude?”

“It’s… uh… behind my back,” Thor said. It wasn’t.

“Well…okay, then!” Sam said. “Let’s go!”

Sam, Tony, and Thor went up to the roof.

"Okay. We're flying to The Park, on the count of 3....” Sam said. “3, 2, 1, GO!”

Tony and Sam jumped off immediately, but Thor stayed behind.
“Ha! Iron Man laughed. “I’m way ahead of you!”
“And Thor’s nowhere to be seen!” Sam said.

Meanwhile, Steve sat curled up on a couch back at Avengers Tower, staring into space.

"How could this happen to me?” he lamented. “I've been betrayed by my best friend!"

Maybe if I jump, my hammer will come to me, Thor thought.
He jumped and fell straight to the ground, creating a loud thudding noise that sounded just like his name.

THOR!!!

"Whoa!” Steve said. “What was that loud thudding noise?"
He went outside to investigate.

“Ow… that hurt…” Thor groaned.

“Thor!” Steve said. “What happened?”

“I… slipped and fell,” Thor said pitifully.

“Oh, no!” Steve said. “Now what will you do?”

"I'll just stay right here..."

"Okay,” Steve said. “I'm gonna go inside and watch TV alone, because my best friend abandoned me!"

A few minutes after he started watching TV, Steve felt something big and heavy climb onto the couch next to him.

“Huh? Oh! Hi, Thor!”
"I want to watch."
“Aww… you’re joining me?” Steve said.
“Yeah!” Thor said. “I’ll be your friend!”
“Okay.”
