Work Text:
It was a cool, clear night under the stars, and there were two people on a date. They’d gone for a picnic in the forest, due to Penny’s aversion towards the saloon. Penny was satisfied, because Sam was smiling and laughing, clearly having a nice enough time. Penny then mentioned how delicious the sandwiches were, so started talking about the sandwiches, which, as talks like these often do, evolved into something completely different. It eventually had Sam saying:
“I mean, sure. Everyone has gay thoughts. You just balance ‘em out with the straight ones. It’s the natural thing, right?
Penny stared at him, confused. “...I don’t have gay thoughts.”
“You don’t? Never looked at a girl and thought Yoba, she’s beautiful? Or cared about a girl like you’d care for one of your crushes?”
“Well, no,” Penny said with bluntness that surprised even herself.
“Oh,” Sam replied. He thought for a moment, feeling conflicted. “Well, I don’t think I’m gay, because I love you, like, a lot.”
Despite this not being the first time Sam told her that, Penny felt her face heat up. “I love you too. You know you can like both?”
“Yeah… I think I get what you're implying.” Sam sighed. “Hate to admit it, but it makes sense.”
“Really?”
“I mean, I used to kinda hate Abby, and Sebastian had a crush on her. I thought that it was because her joining our group was so sudden, but looking back, I probably liked him. Especially because after I was more… Chill about him, I guess, Abby grew on me pretty quick. So, yeah… I probably, um…. like guys too.”
“...Ah,” Penny replied. She didn’t really know how else to respond. “Are you okay with that? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“I think so. At least, I will be. Everything’s just kinda clicked. And I think the people who matter are gonna be okay with it - Dad might be a little confused, but he’ll be fine, generally. I just wanna be sure I’m, y’know…” He trailed off awkwardly.
After she realised he wasn’t going to finish his sentence, Penny finished it for him. “....Bisexual?” she queried.
Sam nodded sheepishly. “Yep, I-I definitely need time to process that before I tell anyone! For now…” He turned more fully towards his girlfriend. “Us thing?” He asked politely.
Penny smiled and nodded. “Us thing,” she replied. Sam thanked her, before leaning forward and giving her a kiss on the nose.
