Hush Now, Quiet Now (So Sleepy)

Summary:

The author attempts to write one last story for Hypnovember, but can her overtired brain overcome her own character’s sweet siren song of sleep?

No, not really.

Written for Hypnovember 30: So Sleepy

Notes:

Listen I am legit sick and very tired and this isn’t really much of a story at all imo. I end Hypnovember not with a bang, but a honk shoo. I’ll rest on the laurels of my other 70,000+ words of hypnovember content.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Hush now, quiet now, it’s time to lay your sleepy head…” Fluttershy softly sang, breaking through Twilight Sparkle’s concentration as her eyes instinctively drooped. She couldn’t sleep yet, she had to— had to— “Hush now, quiet now, it’s time to go to bed”

It sounded so good, she’d worked so hard already, she could feel the need in the ache of her bones, in the miasma of her brain, in the

Geegee closed her eyes for a moment, savoring the feeling as the darkness and silence enveloped her. She envied Twilight, having someone to take care of her, lull her to sleep when she so desperately needed it. Instead she was alone, pushing ahead to keep writing in spite of the siren’s call for sleep. She was so close now, all she needed to do was write just a bit more and she could nod off in peace. She picked back up her phone and began typing again.

in the way every breath became slower and slower. She was teetering on the edge and Fluttershy, good, caring, kind Fluttershy, was there to bring her down safely. She felt the soft down of Fluttershy’s wing as it settled across her back and looked up from her notes, meeting Fluttershy’s teal eyes. It broke her heart to know she was the cause of such concern filling those beautiful orbs… Guiltily, she looked back down at her notes. She couldn’t give in now, not when she was so close to being done!

“Hush now, quiet now, it’s time to lay your sleepy head…” Fluttershy sang again, this time no more than a whisper. But the whisper wormed its way into Twilight’s brain, multiplying and bouncing through until it was almost all Twilight could think about. She was so sleepy, such a, such a sleepy head…

—————

As she typed away at her phone, putting her image of a drowsy Twilight to words, Geegee once again found herself nearly nodding off. It was a good lullaby, a decent enough trigger focus for mind control too. Something a bit repetitive, soothing, something that could slide around the brain and lull you deeper and deeper because you want it. To lay your sleepy head, to go to bed, to set aside the work and the thoughts and the concerns and self critiques and just sleep. She found herself slowly, almost mindlessly humming the tune into the silence of her darkened bedroom. ‘Hush now, quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head…’

Even as her eyes drooped, she continued typing.

—————

Twilight jolted, having caught herself nearly giving in to the words softly caressing her ears, her mind. It sounded better by the second, each repetition Fluttershy fed into her ears making the weight settling in her bones heavier and heavier.

“Hush now, quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head. Hush now, quiet now it’s time to go to bed.”

Made it harder and harder to concentrate, to force the magic through her horn necessary to keep her quill upright.

“Hush now, quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head. Hush now, quiet now it’s time to go to bed.”

Made it harder to… think, to make any words of images or ideas stand out in the sugar-sweet molasses flowing through her mind.

“Hush now, quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head. Hush now, quiet now it’s time to go to bed.”

Twilight’s head drooped, barely catching herself before she collapsed into her notes. The quill at her side clattered onto the desk, bereft of magic as Teikigt’s horny fiddler out

Geegee’s thumbs felt clumsy against the keys, slow breath in and out filling her slowly grinding mind as it struggled to pull together coherency. It would just be so good to

Hush now, quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head. Hush now, quiet now it’s time to go to bed

It would be so nice to just sink into her bed and drift away. Let Fluttershy’s hypnotic voice carry her away into a peaceful slumber. But Fluttershy wasn’t real, just a figment plastered onto her slapdash muse, her rushed attempt at art.

She dropped her phone, hands drooping down. She picked it back up and typed again, forcing a second wind even as she tried to make her imaginary Twilight submit to the call of sleep.

—————

Twilight could barely keep her head up under the barrage of Fluttershy’s continued religion.

Hush now quiet now it’s time to lay your sleepy head hush now quiet now it’s time to go to bed

The way she said it, whispered it as fact into the world drove her deeper and deeper. It was time to lay her sleepy head. It was time to go to bed. She could? It could wait right? She could finish writing tomorrow, finish researching and quilling and slamming through metaphorical wallls bringing facsimiles of thoughts into textual not-reality. Her muse would be there. Her thoughts her notes her ideas her Fluttershy would all be there tomorrow for her just as tonight so why couldn’t she hush now quiet now? It was time to go to bed. She desperately wanted to, her whole body yelling at her to do any th big and everything Fluttershy told her to do. So easy to just listen and droop and no think and follow and lay her sleepy head

—————

Geegee’s eyes involuntarily drooped to a near close and it took her a few seconds to gather the will to open them again. She didn’t want to. She just wanted to sit in the hush now quiet now and let her sleepy head droop down and down and into her fluffy pillows and plushies waiting patiently for her. It was well past time to go to bed and she so desperately needed it. She could practically imagine it, Fluttershy whispering the repeated couplets into her ear, a slightly magical, commanding quality enhancing its natural efficacy and leading her down into inevitable sleep.

Notes:

All spelling mistakes left in intentionally and either came naturally or happened when I let the siren’s song of sleep get too close and put my thumbs on a drowsy autopilot.

I think I’ll take a few days off from writing. Recover from my cold, regain my bearings, all that. Zzz
