Chapter 1: Roasted Marshmallows
Chapter Text
One of Shadow’s favorite holiday memories started with a little girl and a shrill of excitement.
“Shadow!!!” Maria squealed eagerly, tackling Shadow in a side hug.
The black hedgehog tumbled for a minute, but found his footing. “Maria, what–”
“Look!” Maria shoved a picture book straight in his face. The image displayed some sort of dessert made of chocolate, marshmallows, and crackers. It looked…sweet and strange.
“S’mores!!!” Maria beamed, answering Shadow’s unspoken question. “They’re usually made during the summer for camping, but Mom and Dad always made festive ones with peppermint candies this time of year. Grandfather ordered the supplies brought up from earth, so we can make them.” Her blue eyes gleamed. “Would you like to make one?”
“Of course,” Shadow answered. He’d never had a s’more before, but he was eager for the taste. And it made Maria happy – that was the most important part.
Maria eagerly took his hand. “Alright! But we’d better be quick – Grandfather may be knee-deep in his work, but he somehow knows when we’re up to something.”
Breaking into the kitchens was easy enough. Chaos Control did a bulk of the heavy lifting, with Shadow easily sneaking in and swiping the ingredients. He soon warped back to Maria, clutching the treasures: a box of honey graham crackers, a red and white striped bag of Ghirardelli peppermint bark squares, a bag of marshmallows, and some plain chocolate bars. “Did I get everything?”
“Mhm,” Maria smiled. “Now, all we need is the sticks and a fire–”
Shadow’s eyes widened. “Wait, a fire?”
“Yeah? How else do you–” Maria’s eyes widened in realization. “Dang it! I forgot we’re in space. No fireplaces here to toast the marshmallows with.” She pursed her lips together. “I suppose we’ll have to use the microwave in the kitchen. It won’t be the same, but it’ll work.” She reached for the supplies in Shadow’s hands.
“Hold on,” Shadow started, tapping his air shoes against the metal floor. Ruby eyes gleamed. “You designed my air shoes, right?”
“Right.” Maria’s brows knit together in confusion.
“And they have rocket propulsion, right?” Shadow continued.
“Yes, it’s what helps you move fast.” Maria tilted her head to the side. “So?”
Shadow’s face twisted into a smirk. “Don’t rockets shoot fire when they take off?”
Maria’s face lit up like the sun as the dots connected in her head. “Shadow, you’re a genius! A true Robotnik!” She swept Shadow up into her arms, nearly dropping half of their ingredients. She set him down and rubbed his ears, making the black hedgehog purr. “Now, let’s go make some s’mores.”
They parked themselves in a relatively unused biology lab. Ideally, this room would be used for college biology courses taught on the ARK, if the space colony had any college students or young interns. As of right now, the room was deserted and the lab equipment untouched.
Shadow sat on the counter while Maria laid out the spread of sweets. Next to Shadow, Maria had found some metal tongs in the drawer. “So it’s not going to be just like on earth, but it’s going to be close.” Her eyes met Shadow’s. “Start at a low power. No need to burn the marshmallow on the first try. Burnt marshmallows are more yucky than the protein bars.”
“Good to know.” Shadow extended his left leg, watching Maria kneeling on the floor perpendicular to his position. “Be careful,” he warned her.
“Of course,” Maria answered. “Now, let there be fire.”
Shadow kicked his air shoe on, instantly jutting out a blast of heat. Maria nearly yelped at the sight, but managed to shove the tongs right near the shoes. “Is it at low power?”
“Hold on.” Shadow drew back the power a bit. “Okay, it’s low.”
“Good.” Maria carefully placed the tongs in position, turning them gently. “The key to a great s'more is to rotate the marshmallow slowly, so that it cooks evenly. And when it’s a nice shade of gold, then they’re done.” She lifted her head. “Grab two graham crackers and a peppermint square. We’ll need them soon.”
Shadow obeyed, easily opening the packages and laying the crackers out. “Which side do I put the chocolate on?”
“Doesn’t matter,” Maria answered. “Just pick one and lay it peppermint side up.” Shadow chose the right cracker, patting it down with reverence.
“Tada!” Maria pulled the tongs free, a golden marshmallow cradled in the metal hands. “Nice and golden!” She laid the marshmallow on top of the peppermint and then used the other cracker to slide the marshmallow free. Trapped between the crackers and chocolate, the marshmallow oozed right out.
Maria shoved the tongs back under his air shoes. “Always clean your utensils between s’mores. It’s a good habit.” At her nod, Shadow turned off his air shoes and gasped. Maria’s response echoed behind him.
The cupboard directly across from him was charred from the initial blast. And both he and Maria were so caught up in making their treat that they didn’t notice the smoldering cupboard or the melted contents. Even now, wisps of smoke wafted through the air, mingling with the gooey confection’s aroma.
“Oh, snap,” Maria uttered.
BREEP! BREEEP! BREEP!
Both of them covered their ears as the alarms rang out, signaling a fire. The overhead sprinklers kicked on a second later, dousing them in a rush of cold.
“The s’more!” Maria yelped. Shadow gathered her and their treasures tightly before warping them away, just barely missing the ARK’s fire response team kicking in the door.
“Let me see if I understand this. You and Shadow broke into a lab, set a cupboard on fire, ruined hundreds of dollars worth of equipment, and endangered your lives…..all for a s’more?” Professor Gerald Robotnik inquired, peering over his glasses to stare at the two guilty parties. The evidence of their crimes – the s’more ingredients and the slightly melted tongs – sat next to them.
“It was my fault, professor,” Shadow answered. “I…suggested using my air shoes to cook the marshmallow in such a way that would resemble how Maria made s’mores on earth.”
Maria’s blue eyes shimmered like the ocean below them. “It was my fault for suggesting we make s’mores.”
Professor Robotnik sighed deeply. “Well, considering that neither of you were hurt during your escapade, I suppose some good came out of this. And I’m proud of you for your ingenuity. There is just one thing, though.”
Shadow and Maria traded nervous glances.
“Was it good, Shadow?” The professor asked.
Shadow blinked. “Professor?”
The professor smiled fondly. “Was your s’more delicious?”
Shadow shook his head. “Not yet.” He reached for the s’more and carefully split it in half. He handed one half to Maria. “I want to try it with you.” Maria giggled and accepted her piece. She eagerly bit into her piece, humming at the treat. Shadow followed shortly after.
It was like a party in his mouth. The graham crackers were subtle enough to balance out the toasted sugar and the rich mix of chocolate and peppermint; with the latter flavors harmonizing well with each other. The textures of each piece equaled each other, smooth and rough, sweet and savory. It was the perfect balance.
“It’s good,” he replied, eagerly taking another mouthful. He leaned against Maria, the pieces of their s’more touching. “Thank you so much, Maria.”
“My pleasure!” Maria chirped.
“I’d like to do this again,” Shadow continued. His gaze met the professor’s. “That is, if we can.”
“Oh, I’m sure you could,” the professor hummed. “But there are going to be two conditions. One, no more setting labs on fire. If you make s’mores, do it in the kitchen where it’s safer or do it in a room with more space so you don’t burn anything else. And be sure to do it with some supervision.” Maria and Shadow both nodded.
“And secondly, if you make s’mores,” the professor continued. Then he bent down to their height. “Make one for me, too.”
Shadow smiled. “We will, professor.” He and Maria traded a knowing smile. They were definitely going to do this again.
Chapter 2: Winter Flu
Chapter Text
Tails pulled open the microwave door and pulled out the bright blue mug of hot chocolate. He added a dollop of whipped cream and set it on a tray. Next to him, Amy stirred the pot on the stove. “Soup’s almost ready,” she smiled. “Healing soup.” It was technically chicken and rice soup, but the way Amy made it was akin to a miracle healing.
“Smells good,” Tails agreed, the blend of salt, pepper, chicken, and rice mingling in his nose. Amy carefully ladled out a bowl and set it on the tray. She easily scooped it up, grabbing some crackers on the way. “Knuckles, how’s the patient?”
“He’s okay,” Knuckles mumbled. “But you’d better hurry – Sticks is uttering witchcraft again.”
“The ladybug overlords will not take his soul tonight!” Sticks trilled, dropping a bucket of sand on Amy’s freshly vacuumed carpet. She began uttering gibberish and the occasional voodoo chant, waving her arms madly in the air.
Amy shook her head and turned to the figure wrapped up in a ruffled pink quilt laying on her couch. “Sonic, how are you feeling?”
A wet cough was the answer. Sonic looked pale and tired, despite the flush in his cheeks from fever. “Cold ‘n tired. At least Knux is good as a heating pad.”
Amy’s jade eyes softened with concern. “Any better?”
Sonic shook his head. “Jus’ wanna sleep.”
“I know.” Amy laid her hand against Sonic’s forehead. “Think you can eat something? I made healing soup and Tails made you some hot chocolate.”
Sonic’s ears flicked. “Kay. Knux, give me a hand.” Knuckles tenderly sat Sonic upright, stacking a pillow behind the blue hedgehog. Tails placed the tray in front of him, tails flicking nervously (his big brother and hero was sick, after all). Sonic took a spoonful of soup, smacking his lips together in contentment. “Thanks, Ames. Tastes good.”
Amy chuckled. “Of course! This will knock the illness right out of you.”
“Oh good! A miracle cure! Unless you don’t work miracles, Amy. Then we’ll call you a witch and burn you at the stake!” Sticks chimed in.
Amy shook her head at her eclectic friend. “Sticks, why don’t you go get another blanket for Sonic and something to get rid of the sand?”
Sticks darted down the hall with a nod. “Knuckles, don’t let her poison Sonic with her witchcraft! I'm going to get some ocean to get rid of the sand!”
“But Amy's witchcraft does work,” Knuckles muttered. “For a stubbed toe.” He rotated his ankle, pointing his toes in the air.
Amy sighed before turning to her sick friend. “Do you need any medica-hm?”
Sonic had fallen asleep, his head on her shoulders. Smiling softly, Amy adjusted his position so that Sonic’s head was in her lap. She soothingly carded his quills. “Tails, grab the dishes. Knuckles, grab me a wet washcloth for Sonic’s fever.” Both boys scurried off to do their tasks, leaving the blue and pink hedgehogs alone. Sonic relaxed at once, clearly fine with the silence.
“Sleep well, Sonic. You’ll feel better soon,” she assured him. Sonic, deep within his fevered sleep, smiled back in assurance he would. After all, nothing, not even the flu, could stop Sonic the Hedgehog.
Chapter 3: Snowman
Chapter Text
Cream hummed a merry tune as she rolled her ball of snow. “Gemerl, how’s it going?”
“It’s going well, Cream,” the gizoid reported. “I have gathered the necessary things to build a snowman with, which consist of a hat, gloves, scarf, something for the buttons, eyes, and smile, two sticks, and a carrot.” Metallic blue eyes locked onto her. “Don’t eat it.”
Cream laughed. “I won’t!” She tried to pick up the medium sized ball of snow and grunted, tumbling back into the bank.
Gemerl helped her up. “Scan indicates no injury other than cold skin. Are you well?”
“I’m fine,” Cream answered. “The ball was too heavy.”
“Go sculpt the head. I will lift the torso,” Gemerl stated. Cream nodded and began rolling a second ball of snow.
Floral Forest rarely got snow, but when it did, it was simply wonderful. And this year, Cream was teaching Gemerl how to build a snowman (a less violent snow tradition compared to the snowball war – some of their neighbors still gave them nasty looks). So far, there were no angry phone calls yet.
“Torso established. Is the head prepared?” Gemerl asked.
“Sorry!” Cream yelped. She hastily rolled more snow into a ball the size of her own head. Flapping her ears, she lifted the ball from the ground and then placed it on top of the snowy torso.
Gemerl saluted her. “Is it time to decorate?”
“Yes!” Cream grinned. “Start from the top down.” She placed two gray rocks for the eyes in the head and then added the smile with a handful of pebbles. Gemerl added the arms and the three buttons across the middle. Then he lifted Cream up, causing her to giggle.
“Place the hat,” Gemerl grinned as he wrapped the scarf around the snowman’s neck. Cream obliged, the pink hat sitting prettily on the head. The two friends sat down on the ground, admiring their shared creation.
“Assessing….” Gemerl hummed. “Joy detected.”
“That’s right,” Cream giggled. “Thank you for your help.”
“Anything for you, Cream,” the gizoid answered. “Anything for you.” Be it destroying foes or building snowmen, he’d be there for his charge and friend.
Chapter 4: Christmas Sweater
Summary:
Espio and Charmy go sweater hunting.
Chapter Text
“Oh, c’mon!” Charmy whined. “Espio, we’ve been to five stores today! We’re not going to find a sweater in Vector’s size anywhere! Let’s just get him a jacket and get on with it.”
“Hey, back off and pipe down,” Espio grunted, sifting through the racks. “He needs a new sweater for Amy’s party and I’m not about to walk out of here empty-handed.”
"Well, can I go look at the toys?" Charmy asked.
"No. Santa's already got your list -- you don't need to check it twice for him. And we don't have a lot of time -- we have to be home before Vector gets back with the groceries," Espio replied, tossing aside a black sweatshirt with a group of Christmas dancers in skimpy outfits graphic on it.
“I can’t believe we’re all wearing sweaters to Amy's party,” Charmy groaned. “I love Amy’s gingerbread house parties, but do we have to wear the sweaters?”
“Yes, we do. Firstly, it’s because Amy is our friend and she asked. And secondly, if Rouge can wrangle Shadow into a sweater for this, then you can do the same,” Espio remarked.
Charmy’s eyes got devious. “Oh, I know about Shadow’s sweater. And it’s not even Rouge’s idea. Sonic got him one covered in those Pusheen cats and coffee.”
Espio’s blood froze and his head snapped to the bumblebee. “Hold on, Sonic did what?”
“He got Shadow a Pusheen sweater,” Charmy snickered. “I’m pretty sure it’s the pink knit one with coffees and stars on it. He was telling me about it the other day, how he can't wait to see how he looks in it.”
“Oh, Chaos, Sonic’s going to die,” Espio groaned. What the heck was Sonic thinking? Was he asking for a whooping from Shadow (if not for the sweater, then at least for the flirty comment)?
“Yeah, but it’ll be funny,” Charmy snickered. “Maybe we should get one for Vector.”
“Nonsense. Those are overpriced.” Espio pulled out a tan knit sweater with a snow-covered pine graphic. “Hmm….this looks nice. How’s the price?”
Charmy examined it. “20 rings? Not bad. But it’s not a Vector sweater.”
“What do you think he’d wear?” Espio inquired.
“Something cool and Christmasy,” Charmy answered. “Maybe–ooh!” He buzzed off to a different section of the store.
“Charmy!” Espio shouted, scrambling after him. “I just told you, we don’t have time to look at the toy-”
Espio’s heart stopped as Charmy hovered near a selection of forest green sweaters dotted with snowflakes and music notes, shuffling through the sizes. “He’s a 3x, right?”
“Yeah?”
“Bingo Highway!” Charmy squealed, lifting the sweater off the rack. “What do you think?”
Espio smiled. “I think it’s perfect.” In fact, it was giving him an idea.
“Where the heck have you two been?” Vector grumbled, head deep in the pantry. “I thought you both would be home in time to help me unload groceries. I even bought those Christmas Tree cakes you like, Charmy.”
“Yum!” Charmy grinned. “Lemme at ‘em!” He made a break for the kitchen, but Espio held him back.
“Apologies, Vector, but there’s been a change in plans,” Espio remarked, setting the bags on the desk while keeping a hand on Charmy.
“A change in plans?” Vector pulled his head out. “What plans?”
“Amy’s party. Or at least the sweaters we’re wearing,” Espio explained. Releasing Charmy, he opened up the bag. Inside were three matching green sweaters with music notes in their sizes.
“So…whaddya think?” Charmy hummed, gripping the box of Christmas tree cakes.
Vector glanced at the two of them. “So, we’re doing matching sweaters this year? Like in family photos?”
Espio’s gaze dropped. “Is it not a good idea? We can still return everything.”
“Are you kidding, Espio? It’s a wonderful idea!” Vector scooped up both of his teammates in a hug. “It’s perfect! And I love the designs! We’re going to be the coolest guys at the party! Great work, Espio!”
“I’m sure we will,” Espio smiled. “And thank you for the compliment.”
“Anything for my buddy!” Vector grinned. “Now, wait until you see all the sprinkles I got for our houses. I’m thinking about using some of those tree cakes for details and–”
“Wait, what?” Charmy’s voice drifted through the kitchen, mouth stuffed with sugar, yellow cake, and icing. “I thought they were for me.”
Vector groaned, but Espio laid a hand on green scaly shoulders. “I’ll go get another box of cakes.”
"Maybe his sweater should've been one with cakes on it," Vector quipped.
"With his snacking habits?" Espio smirked. "That's not out of the realm of possibility ten minutes into Amy's party."
"True," Vector laughed.
Chapter 5: Northern Lights

Chapter Text
Shadow hefted his body over the ledge of ice and lifted his gaze to the sky. Stars beamed brightly overhead, the familiar pictures in his mind from years of study and reflection.
No matter how often he did it, it still felt weird looking upwards at the stars and not in all directions without special glass. And most notably, without his dearest companion. Especially on a night like this.
The Holoskan villagers down below had said that this was the year when the lights touched the planet. Spirits could use the lights as bridges to the mortal world, spend time with those they loved, and then return. A good night for Shadow to see the lights as one was meant to experience them, with the spirits swirling about him.
Although Shadow believed in spirits, the idea of them crossing sounded a little ludicrous. After all, the Aurora Borealis was an atmospheric phenomenon that reacted with the earth’s magnetosphere. Not a spirit bridge in any shape or form.
He shook his head. He had to stay focused. He came to watch the lights, not ponder the supernatural. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on who was asking, the universe liked making him rethink his choices.
At that moment, the sky exploded with color. The waves of light danced about, undulating in every color of the rainbow imaginable. And if he squinted right, Mobians, animals, and people ran about these colors in merriment, singing a tune Shadow could not place as they danced, the tune echoing off of the ice as they whirled around and above the black hedgehog. It was almost dizzying as Shadow craned his head, trying to see it all.
The experience was akin to a carnival ride in terms of colors and sights, a natural electrical parade as each spirit pranced and twirled about like a performer, from lumbering polar bears to the most graceful ballerina dancers to the staunchest soldiers and even the most beautiful eagles from Soleanna. Each spirit moved as if it knew they were on display, their eagerness reflected in their bright eyes and smiles. A few of them even waved at Shadow as they hurried to their destination, former scientists and researchers on the ARK.
Wave after wave of color and spirits flew past Shadow at a blistering rate. And to think he was only seeing part of the display. The view from the ARK would’ve been just as outstanding.
“You can only see them from certain latitudes down there, but up here, we can see the whole….”
Shadow hummed at the sight of the colors. They were bright as they danced through, faint glimmers of various animals and creatures. Had his sister been here, she might’ve waved at each mighty spirit as it passed them by and bidding them a safe trip.
And then, as if he’d conjured her in his mind, she skipped through the scores of spirits and touched his cheeks, officially exiting the traffic. Her voice echoed merrily with the other singers as she waved them onwards. But Shadow paid her no mind as he smiled. “Welcome to earth, Maria. It’s beautiful here.” As beautiful as his sister.
She beamed like the sun as she embraced him. “Shadow! I missed you!” She kissed his head and took his hands, bouncing on her toes in a miniature dance. Shadow easily followed her lead, their celebration a welcome sight for many spirits as they traveled on.
It was a moment Shadow knew was real. No matter who said it wasn’t or that it was supernatural, Shadow knew that this breathtaking display of lights and music was real. Absolutely real.
Notes:
So I finished this chapter while listening to the "Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth" soundtrack, more specifically "The Gold Saucer" track. That is really what motivated me to finish this prompt, since it had the energy I was looking for in the latter half of the prompt.
Chapter 6: Gingerbread Houses
Chapter Text
Amy hummed along with Bing Crosby as she laid out individual dishes of candies and bowls of frosting. The party guests would be arriving soon and Amy wanted to have as much of her things established. Hence why she laid out her tables each with a premade gingerbread kit and various dishes of candy and frosting.
“As much as I am unfamiliar with such customs, I’m eager for your party, Amy,” Blaze smiled as she sashayed into the room, her pink and purple sweater looking warm and fuzzy.
Amy giggled. “Oh, trust me. You’ll love it! It’s not Christmas without a good gingerbread house!” She smoothed out a crease in her red and white striped long-sleeve sweater dress with pom-poms. “And ask any of our friends – these parties are a tradition.”
“I’m quite certain of that,” Blaze agreed. “Now, where are you placing the Twizzler candies?”
“Split them up evenly and place them next to each individual tray,” Amy answered. “I’ll go grab the powdered sugar for the imitation snow. By that point, we can start setting up the snack table.” She hurried into the kitchen and set it up. When she returned, Blaze was laying out the charcuterie board of cheeses, crackers, and meats. Amy set up the hot chocolate bar in a hurry, finishing just as the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it,” Blaze started.
“I’ll grab it. Grab the Christmas cookies,” Amy ordered. “As the hostess, greeting guests is my job.”
“Alright then, dear,” Blaze remarked with a smile. Amy grinned back and opened her door.
Sonic, as expected, was the first to arrive, adorned in a festive red sweater with a chili dog on it. Tails was with him in an orange sweater. Knuckles was not far behind, sporting a green sweater with grapes on it. “Hey Ames!” Sonic beamed. “We brought chocolate covered pretzels for snacking or for decorating!” Tails held up a red snowman container stuffed with said pretzels.
“Cool! Put them on the snack table,” Amy grinned. Sonic winked at her and obliged. Then he zipped back to her. "No mistletoe shenanigans this year. Got it?"
Amy laughed. "Of course, Sonic." In a lower voice, she added, "Blaze said yes, by the way." The pink hedgehog would never stop loving Sonic, but after the Starfall Islands and her own adventure, Amy had found a new love in the more reserved princess of the Sol Dimension. They were still in that sweet phase, but hopefully, things would carry on. Love conquered everything, after all.
"Good on you!" Sonic beamed. "Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta make sure Tails doesn't eat all the mint candies before we start decorating." He then zipped off, the pink hedgehog smiling at the sight before turning to greet the new arrivals.
Team Dark was next, led by Shadow, adorned in a pink cat sweater. At Amy’s look, he growled out, “Damn that stupid blue fool.”
Rouge laughed, carrying a tray of checkerboard cookies. "Come on, hun. Go find your seat." At Amy's quizzical expression, she added, "Sonic bought him the sweater."
Amy's eyes got round. "No, he didn't!" She exclaimed.
"Oh, yes he did," Rouge beamed. "Fifty rings says they'll be a couple by Christmas, what with the way they've been flirting with each other."
Amy glanced at Sonic, the latter loading his plate with snacks and laughing. Then she gazed at Shadow, the black hedgehog's gaze meeting hers briefly before returning to glare at Sonic. The tension was oozing over, a classic rivals to lovers if Amy played it right. There was nothing straight about their behavior during the last Twitter Takeover....
"Make it a hundred," Amy smirked. "I've watched the both of them dance around this enough." She'd always wanted to do some holiday matchmaking -- here was her chance.
"I'll hold you to that," Rouge winked. "Snack table?" She inquired, holding up the cookies.
"Yes. Omega, don't break my glass unicorn while you're sitting down," Amy replied.
"I WILL NOT BREAK YOUR FRAGILE HORNED HORSE," Omega beeped, adorned in a black and red sweater. He sat down next to the outlets and waited for Rouge to join him and Shadow.
One by one, more of their friends arrived, each armed with a festive snack or something to decorate with and in good spirits. Everyone, from her self-proclaimed baby sister Cream to new allies, such as Tangle and Whisper. The last to arrive was Team Chaotix. They all had matching festive sweaters and each carried a box of Christmas tree cakes (though Charmy’s was already half-empty, given the crumbs on his sweater). Everyone took five minutes to find their seats and get their snacks before plunging into their work.
Amy smiled, watching all of her friends happily decorate their houses. Cream’s hands were steady as they came with her mother supervising. Sonic and Tails were playfully scuffing over candy. Shadow had a faint smile as he decorated his house, each candy being placed with care. Rouge dug her fingers into everyone’s cups full of jolly ranchers, the gem-like candies shining in the light. Tangle and Whisper carefully dotted frosting across their houses and sprinkled snow on their roofs while playfully feeding each other some caramel popcorn. Silver levitated some of the uneaten Christmas Tree cakes over to his section and handed one to Blaze. The cat took it with a soft thank you. She then lifted her mug of hot chocolate to Amy in an appreciative toast. “To Amy, for putting together such a wonderful party.”
“To Amy!” Everyone chanted. Amy smiled back, dipping into a small curtsy as she began work on her own gingerbread house. The conversation flowed about her, full of laughter and merriment. Sonic and Shadow traded quips every so often while Tangle and Cream swapped decorating tips. Tails rattled off some history about gingerbread while Blaze and Silver chimed in occasionally. Vector and Espio spoke of their sweater mission while trying to keep Charmy from stuffing his face. Every now and then, Blaze bumped Amy's knee under the table with her own, keeping Amy grounded as they worked. There was a sense of liveliness and home that hadn't been felt since the war and the Metal Virus. It was rather nice.
In short, it was perfect. And nothing could go wrong.
“Charmy!” Vector barked, cutting into Amy's reverie. “Quit eating the candy, you’re gonna–”
Charmy’s wings buzzed crazily before he rocketed off his chair.
Chapter 7: Condensed Breath
Summary:
Movie universe family fluff.
Chapter Text
When did this planet get so cold?
Sonic, huddled in his cave with little more than his fur and quills to keep him warm, shivered. If Longclaw knew how cold this planet would be, she never would’ve sent him here, regardless of if it was to keep him safe.
Longclaw….the very thought sent a cold pang through Sonic. Whenever he got cold, he used to roll into Longclaw’s hold, her massive wings akin to a giant blanket. It was very soothing and relaxing.
Earlier attempts to light a fire had failed when his rock smashing abilities failed. And so, here he was, lying on the cold cave floor away from the holes in the cave while he struggled to stay warm.
He blew out a breath, watching it rise like a puff of smoke. Immediately, he raised his hands to his snout and blew out another breath. His hands were warmed. He needed to stay warm.
He’d seen so many people about Green Hill bundled in thicker clothing or in their warm homes with roaring fires and fuzzy-looking blankets, arms loaded with cups of a thick brown beverage topped with white fluffy things eagerly feeding each other sweet treats. Sonic envied those people a bit. He had no one. Nothing.
Sonic curled into a ball, tears sticking to his cheeks as his breath puffed in frantic bursts.
He was alone. All alone. And if he died here, frozen to death, no one would miss him.
But that was fine. No big deal. He would survive, one way or another. Longclaw had sacrificed to get him here – the least he could do was live.
Sonic glanced at his feet, paws starting to peek through the brown booties. First thing tomorrow, he was going to get some shoes and something to warm himself with. He would survive. He would.
Sonic huffed and puffed up the driveway to his home. Breath puffed out from under his scarf. “Fastest thing alive and I’m nearly frozen solid,” he huffed, breath rising in the air in droves.
Okay, so walking to his old stomping grounds was a bad idea. He just…wasn’t expecting to spend so much time out there reminiscing and all that. So now he was cold and frostbitten. Any more time out here and his breath would freeze to his jaw.
No sooner did he open up the front door than Maddie was there. “Somebody’s as blue as ice,” she giggled. She helped him out of his coat and hat, shaking some snow out from both. “I made you some hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies. Wrap yourself up in a blanket and sit in front of the fire,” she smiled, handing Sonic a tray with two items on it: one, a mug topped with marshmallows and whipped cream, and two, a plate with three freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. The combined aromas warmed Sonic's nose immediately.
"Yes, mom," Sonic smiled as he accepted the festive tray and trundled into the living room, where a roaring fire awaited. He sat down in front of it, sighing deeply at the warmth. Maddie returned to the kitchen, singing along with something on the radio. Sonic briefly closed his eyes, the warmth seeping into his body for a moment.
“Hedgehog!” Knuckles bellowed as he and Tails hurried into the room. “We have obtained fresh socks and comic books as per mother’s request. Are you warming?”
“Uh huh. Thanks, Knux.” Sonic shyly stuck his feet out, letting Tails slide a pair of red and white slipper socks on his feet. Knuckles sat beside Sonic, one arm easily fixing the blanket. Tails sat on Sonic’s other side, tails lying close to Sonic’s feet to keep them warm. Knuckles opened up a comic book and held the pages out so Sonic could read while he sipped his hot chocolate and ate his cookies. Maddie popped in briefly to fill up their mugs and gave them more cookies. Even Ozzie lumbered over and lay down, keeping his hedgehog brother warm. Snuggled between his two brothers, Sonic smiled, casting a slight grin out at the snowfall outside.
He would never freeze out there again, socially and literally.
Chapter 8: Sparkling Snow
Summary:
What can go wrong with Silver and Sonic shoveling snow?
Chapter Text
“Whoa.”
Sonic laughed. “C’mon, Silver, you’ve seen snow before!”
“Yeah, but not this pretty!” Silver exclaimed. “It’s beautiful!” And indeed it was. The snowfall from the night before had buried everything in a thick blanket of light that glistened in the morning sun. It was akin to a fresh canvas, eagerly awaiting someone to play in it.
Sonic saw Silver’s eagerness and put a hand to his shoulder. “We have to shovel the Restoration HQ walkway first. Then we can do whatever in the snow.”
Silver smirked and jerked his hand upwards. Instantly, a three foot section of snow jerked into the air, enfolded in a cyan hold. “Like this?”
Sonic, arms laden with a pair of shovels, stood silent for a minute before smirking. “So, it’s a race, huh? Alright, then.” His shovel hit the ice with a clang. “Then let’s race!” He zipped off in a blur of blue. Silver followed, gathering snow behind him. Smirking, he tried pelting Sonic with a snowball.
“Hey! No cheat codes!” Sonic yelled, deflecting one with his shovel. He threw a massive scoop at Silver, the albino hedgehog dodging the attack. Both hedgehogs whipped around, hurling the snow all around them, their task forgotten in the adrenaline of a snowball fight. Both boys laughed as the snow flew wildly, no malice in their attacks as they neared each other for another strike.
Silver finally mustered a giant snowball, holding it high above his head. “It’s no use, Sonic! Take this!” He hurled the ball at Sonic, the blue hedgehog leaping aside.
“Too slow, Silver!” He taunted. “Now I’ll show you!” He revved up, gathering more snow in his hands, ready to pelt Silver to bits akin to a machine gun.
“Sonic! Silver!” Both hedgehogs spun around, eyes wide at the sight.
Lanolin, buried in snow up to her chin courtesy of Silver’s massive snowball, glared at them. “What are you doing?!”
“We got the walk shoveled,” Silver smiled bashfully, scratching his head.
Lanolin shook her head. “Just get me unburied.”
“I don’t know,” Sonic giggled, nudging Silver. “Restoration HQ does look more festive with the snowsheep, doesn’t it?”
Silver caught on. “Yeah! I’ll go get some decorati-”
BONG!!!!
Both hedgehogs were buried in an onslaught of snow. Lanolin pocketed her Wispon with a glare before hurrying inside.
Sonic and Silver traded grins. “Do you want a rematch?”
“It’s no use to try and beat me!” Silver laughed, gathering the snow around them. Sonic grabbed the shovel and the pair raced down the walkway, leaving waves of white and peals of laughter in their wake.

Amy's Gingerbread Party Part 2.
Chapter Text
“Somebody get him!!!!” Vector shouted, leaping to his feet.
"I got him!" Silver reacted first, slinging a blanket around the sugar-crazed bee with his telekinesis. But Charmy broke through, his buzzing roaring like an angry hive. Shadow was next, trying and failing to land one of his signature smackdowns, crashing into the wall and making her pictures rattle.
“I’ll get him!” Knuckles hopped up to get him alongside Espio. The pair collided with each other and slammed into the hot chocolate display. Hot chocolate and toppings spilled out all over the floor.
“WHHEEEEEEEEEHEEEEHEEEHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!” Charmy squealed. “Can’t catch me! Can’t catch me!”
“Chaos Control!” Shadow hollered, lifting the emerald high. Time slowed briefly as he lunged for Charmy and wrapped his arms about the middle. As time unfroze, Charmy zipped off, dragging Shadow behind him up the stairs and then back down. Vector launched into the air and landed on the table, splitting it in half and shattering more dishes and decorations. The powdered sugar bowl flipped into the air and blanketed Amy in white. Cream, Cheese, and Chocola yelped, darting behind the armchair in the living room.
"Charmy, let's settle down, dear," Vanilla gently suggested.
"No! No!" Charmy laughed. "I'm a free bee! Free bee! Free bee! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" He buzzed in loops and corkscrews, face manic with sugar.
“Omega! No blasters!” Rouge hollered, spreading her wings. At that moment, both Sonic and Shadow charged into Charmy, the three of them crashing into her shelf where a certain collectible was.
CRASH!
The glass unicorn lay in splinters.
Silence reigned in the room. Amy, covered in powdered sugar, stared at the ruins of her gingerbread party. Candies smashed to bits amidst the broken houses and dishes. Hot chocolate puddled on her nice new rug. Frosting painted her walls in a haphazard display. Her shelf was utterly wrecked, its treasures spewed amidst the sugary disaster and the three caught in the rubble. Everything was ruined. Everything, down to her glass unicorn. The pink hedgehog’s breathing quickened as her eyes narrowed at the culprits.
“Ames–” Sonic started, putting a hand out for her as he got to his feet. Cream peeked back into the dining room. All of the guests stared at Amy in a mix of fear and concern. Even Shadow looked a little concerned for Amy.
"Amy?" Tails started. "Are you okay?"
“Get out,” Amy hissed. “All of you.”
“Amy, I’m sure–” Blaze started.
“OUT!” Amy drew her hammer. “All of you! All I wanted was for us to have a good time with my friends and celebrate this holiday season and you all wrecked it!” She pointed her hammer at Charmy. “Especially you!” She gripped her hammer tightly. “Now everyone has five minutes to get their things and get out of my house before I flatten you like you flattened my party. Time starts now.”
Now, nobody wanted to get walloped on the head, so everyone scattered in a furious display of scarves and hats before dashing out the door, arms laden with what little of their houses they could salvage. Except for Blaze, who gathered up a broom and dustpan.
“Blaze, just–” Amy started.
“Amy, dear,” Blaze interrupted. “Let me help you.”
Amy’s jade eyes were full of tears as she put her hammer away. “I wanted this to be perfect. You often can’t come to the gingerbread parties, so I wanted to make sure this one was special.”
“And I appreciate that,” Blaze replied. “But I had a wonderful time despite the hiccups. I miss my friends. I miss you.”
Amy’s eyes widened at that, her gaze snapping to the fiery princess’. The purple feline laid her hands on Amy's continued, “I am sure that Charmy, Silver, and the others did not intend to wreck your party. And I’m equally sure that they are sorry that they did. But threatening to wallop their heads will not solve the problem nor will it make you feel better.”
“You’re right,” Amy sighed. “I’m sorry, Blaze.”
“I forgive you. And don’t worry – after I help you clean up, I’ll make sure the men make it up to you. I promise,” Blaze smiled.
“Oh, I’ll take care of that,” Amy smirked. “I’ve got ways to make the men squirm.”
Chapter 10: Carols
Chapter Text
Shadow pushed through the elementary doors and sighed. He had no business being at an elementary school concert, but he could not pass up Cream’s humble invitation.
“Please come to my choir concert, Mr. Shadow!”
He only agreed because it was Cream, perhaps the least annoying of those he acquainted himself with. Had it been anyone else, he’d have punched them in the face and said "no". As such, he maneuvered through the crowd of eager parents and disinterested older siblings and entered the auditorium while snagging a green program on the way in, which was little more than a miniature amphitheater with plastic multicolored chairs. He sat down in the back on a bright yellow one.
He tried to remember what Cream was wearing tonight. She’d said she was wearing her brand new dress, the one her mama picked out for her. She would be wearing it again to the Christmas party in a few weeks, but tonight was the debut.
A flock of festive kids tumbled into the room, whispering and giggling as they climbed onto the risers. Every single one of them had something festive, be it a hat or a Christmas shirt (one kid, the reindeer in the blue jeans and plaid shirt, actually had a light-up red nose).
Ah, there she was, right on the edge at top of the riser on his right. And she did have a pretty dress. It was a black and plaid knee-high one with short puffy sleeves and a black bow about the waist. She had a shiny red bow on her head. She beamed from ear to ear, eyes darting amidst the audience as if she was looking for someone. Her mother, perhaps. Cream had never told Vanilla Shadow was coming.
And then the kids started singing.
Shadow felt his heart clench at the angelic voices singing sweetly. It reminded him of how Maria used to sing along with the record player, blessing the ears of many scientists while they labored on the ARK. Christmas songs were her favorite to sing along with and he remembered her roping him into caroling from laboratory to laboratory.
The kids went through “Rudolph” first (good thing, because Shadow had heard that song enough to warrant him grabbing a glock to ice that deer). Then they went into “Jingle bells”. “Sleigh ride”. “Frosty”. Song after song. Shadow casually glanced at the program, curious as to how many songs were left. Ruby eyes snapped wide, catching the name of the last song.
“Ding dong merrily” had been Maria’s favorite. And it was the last song they’d be singing.
Shadow’s gaze snapped up to Cream, who smiled as the choir picked up the final song's melody, their voices swirling in harmony with the elegant song. It sounded beautiful, enchanting even. This was clearly the song the choir put the most effort in, given how strong it sounded compared to some of the other pieces. It was almost enough to bring Shadow to tears. Almost.
When it was over, Shadow stood up and applauded alongside the other parents. Of course he would – he wasn’t a monster. The kids were beaming from ear to ear, eyes darting about to find their parents and relatives in the crowd for the obligatory pictures.
Cream’s eyes met Shadow’s. She waved at him happily. Shadow waved too, smiling back at her. Once the kids were dismissed, she ran right up to him and wrapped her arms around his middle. “Thank you for coming, Mr. Shadow!”
Still smiling, Shadow wrapped his arms around her. “You’re welcome, Cream. You sounded beautiful.” Just as beautiful as his sister, if not more so.
Chapter 11: Slippery/Fallen Through the Ice
Chapter Text
“Chaos, you make it look so easy,” Sonic grumbled, legs jerking underneath him as he scrambled to stay upright.
Shadow tsked, gliding about the ice. “Are you telling me you can’t skate?” His hand lightly grazed the handcrafted barrier before he pivoted around elegantly, one leg extended in front of him. The pond was frozen enough for the two hedgehogs to skate while their friends retired back at the resort, prepping for the next days’ events.
“I can skate too!” Sonic huffed. “I skated in the Winter Olympics last year!”
“And need I remind you who took first in figure skating?” Shadow taunted, gliding past Sonic.
“Peach only took second because my skate came undone,” Sonic grumbled, sliding clumsily along the ice.
“Tch. Excuses.” Shadow launched into a triple axel, sticking the landing. “I’ve been skating since I was awakened. And I’m the Ultimate Lifeform – of course I’m the best skater.”
“Can it, Shadow!” Sonic huffed, speeding up his clumsy movements. He was sick of Shadow being a jerk and flexing his title as if it was something actually worth value. “Look at me! I can skaahhhhhhhhhhh!” Sonic yelped as he fell hard on his rear, skidding over a little berg, sailing in the air for a moment, and smashing through the ice into the water below.
Shadow immediately stopped on a dime, eyes fixated on the cracking ice and the hole it came from, the dark blue water ebbing gently. Everyone knew the rivalry between the two hedgehogs was strong. But even Shadow wouldn’t let his rival drown in a sudden polar plunge.
“Sonic!” Shadow yelped and rushed over to the hole. With nary a second thought, he plunged into the water. He could barely see Sonic flailing about in the water. Gripping Sonic by the quills, Shadow warped the pair of them back to the surface and on solid ground. Noticing Sonic still shivering violently, Shadow warped them again to the ski resort, startling many of the guests in the lobby. He sat Sonic down in front of the lobby's fireplace, wrapped him up in a blanket, and got him a mug of steaming hot chocolate.
“Thanks, Sh-Shadow,” Sonic smiled despite his shivering, causing his hot chocolate to slosh dangerously. “Guess it was a little sl-slippery.”
“Watch yourself next time,” Shadow grunted. "You're lucky I could teleport us out of that water."
“Heh. Yeah.” Sonic sipped his hot chocolate and scooted closer to Shadow, the black hedgehog bristling at the initial contact. “Hey, I know what winter sport I could beat you in that's not skating.”
At Shadow’s silence, Sonic smirked. “I could beat you in a downhill ski race.”
“Warm up,” Shadow ordered. “And then we’ll see how that goes. Besides, I can beat you any day of the week regardless of if you get hypothermia.”
“Prove it,” Sonic taunted. “Once I get warm, of course. I'll make you eat those words.”
"We'll see about that," Shadow replied coolly.
Chapter 12: Christmas Tree

Nudging this prompt up for the special occasion.

Chapter Text
A poem by Shadow the Hedgehog, found in an old G.U.N. data file:
Shining green, festive and bright
A beacon in winter’s bitter fright.
Our tree stands high above
Decorated with many things laid in love.
Every decoration placed just right
To guide Santa through the night.
It might be hard to bring our gifts up here
High above the atmosphere,
But such concerns do not disrupt our cheer.
My sister has spoke often of this tree,
How this tradition came to be,
And what she dreams will be there
When the morning light begins to fair.
She’s asked me what I want most this year
What can Santa fit on his reindeer
That would please my deepest desire?
Something that would fuel my fire?
Yet little does she see
That the only thing I could want she’s already given me:
A chance for her to be happy.
I have no care for toys or books
Or things that give me second looks.
No, I long for her smile at her rebirth,
The day she returns to Earth.
And there we’ll decorate the tallest tree
In memory of the events that we
Laughed and hoped for long ago
With dreams of hopes and snow
And a Christmas tree that ever so brightly glows.
Notes:
Merry Christmas, everyone.🎄

Bursts of color lit up the sky, echoing back the merrymaking of those below. Station Square had wasted no time in preparing the spectacle, ranging from banners to the massive countdown clock.
And high above it all, Shadow watched with absolute disinterest. At least, until a blur of blue caught his attention as it zipped up the side of the building and stopped right next to him.
“Heya, Shads!” Sonic grinned.
“Hmph.” Shadow grunted.
“Something bugging you?” Sonic inquired, eyeridge narrowed. “Besides me?”
“You’re part of it,” Shadow snorted. But then he gazed up at the fireworks. “I’m not fond of celebrating the final day of the year. Especially this year.”
“Ah, someone’s a little salty about losing his marketing campaign, huh?” Sonic teased. Shadow shot him a glare that could easily be translated as I’m going to kill you and then kill you again.
“Seriously, though,” Sonic smiled, “I know you’re happy with this year. Sure, it was a little flimsy, but we got a banger remaster and an even more epic movie! Heck, we stood toe to toe with the Mouse this year! And the merch! We had an amazing year, I agree!” Then his eyes softened. “But all good things come to an end. That’s why we have to make the most of the time we have.” Then he grinned. “Besides, it’s not over yet. We’ve still got other things coming next year! We’ve got our comic crossover. Our movie’s still in theaters. And we’ve got more coming, Shadow. The best is still to come.”
“I suppose you’re right,” Shadow smiled faintly. Then his brow furrowed. “Was your resolution to be more insightful?”
“Hey, I have my moments!” Sonic exclaimed. Then he shook his head. “No, my resolution is to keep on running and to spend more time with my friends. The important stuff.” He grinned. “Did you make one?”
“Well–” Shadow started when something caught his eye.
At that moment, a red firework and a blue firework erupted at the same time, capturing the hedgehog’s silhouettes along with a worded one that said #Fearless. Ruby and emerald eyes sparkled with joy. Down below, the crowd was chanting one number after another.
“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” The crowd screamed wildly as the clock chimed with midnight's arrival. Noisemakers rang out across the sky, punctuated by cannons of confetti billowing across the square. The noise was so gratuitous that both hedgehogs covered their ears briefly from the overstimulation.
Sonic uncovered his ears slowly, adjusting to the noise rather quickly. "Whew! What a party!" He turned back to Shadow. "Now, what were you saying? Were you answering my question?"
“Actually,” Shadow said slowly, “I did make a resolution.” He turned to Sonic with a smile. “I resolved to keep honoring Maria’s wish.”
“Don’t you do that every year?” Sonic asked.
“It’s…been a while,” Shadow admitted slowly. “But recent experiences have…reminded me to keep what matters most to me first and foremost. There’s more to me than being your rival and I’ve neglected that for years. This year, I’m going to keep my promises first and foremost, along with my team.” His gaze met Sonic’s. “And I’ve also resolved to treat you a little better as well. You are my rival, but there’s more to our relationship than that.”
The two rivals looked at each other with a look of understanding. Sonic put out his hand. “Happy New Year, Shadow.”
Shadow shook it back. “Happy New Year, Sonic.”

Chapter Text
“I’m excited for next week,” Shadow grunted, pushing a shopping cart down the baking aisle.
“Really?” Charmy asked, leaning in really close.
“No, damn you,” Shadow huffed, flicking the bee away and off.
“Hey, Shads, I know you’re ticked off about us dragging you away from your brooding spot, but we’ve got to make this up to Amy,” Sonic replied, examining a tub of buttercream frosting before tossing it in the cart. “We wrecked her party, so we’ve got to set things right.”
“I’m not the one who went on a rampage,” Shadow replied, gripping the cart so hard the metal started to warp under his hand.
“Dude, you put a dent in her wall,” Sonic snarked.
“Why are you accusing me of all the damage?” Shadow asked. “Vector broke her dining room table in half!”
“Yeah, I know,” Vector sighed. “But Sonic’s right. We’re going to throw Amy an apologetic gingerbread house party!”
“Can I get extra chocolate?” Charmy asked, picking up a tub of chocolate frosting. “For the houses?”
“You need more chocolate like I need another horn,” Espio calmly replied. He carefully laid out an armful of pre-made house kits on the bottom of the cart, overtop the frosting tubs and festive cookies. “I’m afraid there might not be enough to make the houses with,” he added. “I grabbed what was there.”
“No sweat, Espio!” Vector reached up and pulled out four boxes of gingerbread cake mix. “We can always make our own!”
“With chocolate!” Charmy grinned.
“One more word out of you and I’ll buy duct tape for your mouth!” Shadow barked. Charmy’s lips sealed shut like someone had superglued them together.
“Shads, chill,” Sonic growled. “I told you we were doing this whether you liked it or not. The least you could do is be polite. Besides, would Maria like the fact you threatened a kid?”
“Don’t rope Maria into this,” Shadow snapped.
“Then don’t threaten our friend,” Sonic stated, laying down the ultimatum.
“Fine,” Shadow sighed. He turned to Charmy. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s cool!” Charmy beamed with all the ready forgiveness of a six-year-old. “As long as we get lots of candy and chocolate!” He buzzed around, smiling as he snatched bags of stocking-stuffer sized treats.
“Get back here!” Vector yelped, grabbing the kid with both hands. The bags of candies landed in the cart with musical thumps.
Sonic chuckled and grabbed a bag of Ghirardelli chocolates off the shelf and examined it. Mint cookie flavor. He tossed the bag into the cart. “Tails, no touchie.”
“Awww….” the fox kit protested sadly, retracting his paws.
“Here, fox,” Knuckles chimed in, snatching a second bag and tossing it to Tails. The kit clapped his hands eagerly.
“Remember, we’re doing this for Amy,” Sonic grinned. “She’s going to be thrilled when she sees this.”
“Indeed,” Shadow answered softly, his earlier malice forgotten as he plucked a bag of dark chocolate bars off the shelf. He examined it before holding it up. “I’m getting this and those chocolate covered espresso beans.”
“Fine by me,” Sonic agreed, snatching a bag of holiday gummies.
“Alright, boys,” Amy sighed as she entered Tails’ workshop, a plate of cookies with sliced strawberries pressed into the buttercream frosting to resemble trees. “Sonic, what was so urgent that you insisted-” Her eyes widened at the sight.
The workshop was decorated like the holiday season it was for. Trees and string lights decorated the scene. Bing Crosby softly played on the stereo. The main workshop table was finely decorated with battery-operated candles. Candies, cookies, and gingerbread sat at plenty of places, enough for everyone. A side table full of snacks sat against the wall with a fully-stocked hot chocolate bar. Everyone who’d been at her party was there, all of them wearing festive sweaters. And in the center of the table was a familiar glass unicorn.
“I-” Amy started. “What is this?”
“A do-over,” Sonic explained. “We’re sorry for wrecking your party, so we made you a new one.”
Blaze, from her spot at the end of the table, smiled and lifted her mug of chocolate truffle hot chocolate. “I had nothing to do with this, Amy. This was all their idea.”
Amy’s gaze darted to all of them, searching their expressions for the trick. The moment when they would burst out laughing, teasing her for her foolish hopes. But there was no malice.
“Rose,” Shadow spoke, coming forward with a box of homemade chocolate-covered strawberries. “I’m sorry for destroying your previous party.”
Vector came forward next, holding out a bag of gumdrops. “Sorry about wrecking things.”
Charmy buzzed forward softly, tears spilling over his cheeks as he offered a box of snowflake brownies. “I’m sorry,” he whimpered, eyes already red and puffy. “I’m so sorry.”
Amy cooed as she pulled Charmy into a hug, passing her treats to Vector. “Charmy, it’s okay,” she soothed. “It’s okay. I’m not angry anymore.” She motioned for Vector and Shadow to join her. Sonic came over and hugged her too. Everyone did. Amy felt tears fill her eyes. The boys didn’t have to do this, but the fact that they went to all the trouble to give her a brand new gingerbread party almost exactly as she planned it.
“Does this mean we’re off the hook for punishment?” Charmy hiccupped.
“No,” Amy answered. “You’re all getting my hammer later. But for now, I want to enjoy the party with my friends.”
“Okay,” Sonic agreed. They all gathered around the table again, but this time, there was an air of merriment. Laughter echoed throughout the workshop, even from Shadow. Everyone worked on their houses together, passing frosting from one end to another. Everyone had brought treats and decorative material and shared accordingly. No one consumed more sugar than was needed. And of course, Amy had first dibs on any special items, such as the petite fours Blaze decorated to look like presents or the candy gems that Rouge painstakingly crafted together.
“Say party!” Tails grinned, holding up the Miles Electric in camera mode. The lens focused on the table loaded with everyone’s decorated houses.
“Party!” Everyone hollered. The camera captured everyone’s smiles, but no one was smiling more than Amy.
