The soft hum of Christmas music drifted through the room, spilling from a small speaker perched on Megumi’s desk. The familiar jingles mingled with the faint scent of candy cane candles, their warm glow flickering on the nearby shelf. The scent of freshly baked holiday cookies and rich, warm hot cocoa filled the room, wafting over from the tray of snacks resting on the bedside table. The sweetness of chocolate and the spiced aroma of gingerbread blended perfectly with the faint scent of the candy cane candles, creating a cozy holiday haven.
Yuuji stood precariously, one foot planted firmly on the desk while the other balanced on the edge of Megumi’s swiveling office chair. His brow furrowed in concentration as he stretched upward, the colorful string of Christmas lights dangling between his fingers like a cascade of captured starlight.
Behind him, Megumi hovered anxiously, his hands fidgeting with the hem of Yuuji’s matching Christmas pajamas. The fabric was soft beneath his fingertips, patterned with snowflakes and tiny reindeer that danced across the crimson flannel. His knuckles whitened as he tugged at it, a mixture of nervousness and protective instinct bubbling up inside him. “Yuuji, honey, please be careful,” he pleaded, his voice tinged with a worry he couldn’t mask.
Yuuji glanced down, his lips curving into a reassuring grin that caught the glow of the lights. “I am being careful Megs,” he said lightly, though the slight wobble of the chair beneath him betrayed his confidence. His pink hair caught the reflection of the twinkling lights, making it look almost iridescent in the room's cozy warmth.
Megumi wasn’t convinced. His dark eyes flicked from the wobbling chair to Yuuji’s outstretched arm. Every time the chair shifted, his heart leapt into his throat. “You’re going to fall,” he mumbled, his voice softer now, edged with a vulnerability that made Yuuji pause.
“I’m not going to fall sweetheart,” Yuuji replied gently, his tone steady as he leaned back just enough to look at Megumi fully. “But even if I did, you’d catch me, wouldn’t you?” His words were playful, but the warmth in his gaze melted Megumi’s worry just a little.
Megumi sighed, his fingers releasing their grip on the pajama bottoms only to hover uncertainty at his sides. He bit his lip, his worry lingering but softened by the trust he saw in Yuuji’s expression. “You’re ridiculous,” he muttered, though there was no bite in his words.
Yuuji’s grin widened as he turned back to his task, the lights catching on his wrist as he looped the string around the hook above the desk. The bulbs, once plugged in, would flicker to life, casting a soft rainbow of colors that painted the walls with warmth and life. “See? Now everything's perfect! Just like you,” Yuuji teased, a triumphant laugh escaping him as he hopped down from the chair.
The chair spun wildly, causing Megumi to flinch and grab it to steady it. He glared at Yuuji, though the effect was ruined by the faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “One day, you’re going to give me a heart attack,” he grumbled, his arms instinctively wrapping around Yuuji’s waist as the latter stepped closer.
Yuuji pulled him in with ease, pressing a soft kiss to Megumi’s temple. “But not today,” he whispered against his skin, his voice carrying the same warmth as the Christmas lights now glowing brightly in their little sanctuary.
Megumi let out a reluctant laugh, his arms tightening around Yuuji. The music swelled, a familiar carol wrapping around them like a cozy blanket. For a moment, all the worry and tension melted away, leaving only the soft hum of the lights, the gentle crackle of the candle, and the steady beat of Yuuji’s heart beneath Megumi’s cheek.
Yuuji pressed another soft kiss to Megumi’s temple, the warmth of his lips lingering like a fleeting spark. His voice, tender and coaxing, broke the quiet moment. “Now, go lay down,” he murmured, his hands gently nudging Megumi toward his own twin bed tucked against the corner of the room.
Megumi hesitated for a heartbeat, a playful pout crossing his face before he relented. He crossed the room, the familiar creak of the floorboards beneath his steps blending with the gentle strains of music still spilling from the speaker. The bed welcomed him with its soft, worn-in comfort, the Christmas blankets cool against his skin as he settled into his usual side. He tugged the edge of the comforter up to his chest, the faint scent of pine clinging to the fabric reminding him of Yuuji’s earlier insistence on spraying the room with “holiday spirit.”
Yuuji moved with practiced ease, his steps quiet as he flipped the switch on the main light. The sudden absence of its yellow glow left the room in a hushed semi-darkness, the faint flicker of the candy cane candle providing a soft, warm backdrop. He turned, his silhouette illuminated faintly by the remaining light. His pink hair, tousled from the evening’s antics, glowed softly, catching hints of orange and red from the candle.
Walking back toward the string of lights now wrapped around the room, Yuuji glanced over his shoulder, his lips curving into a lopsided grin. “You ready, Megs?” he asked, his voice carrying a teasing lilt.
Megumi couldn’t help the small smile that pulled at his lips. Yuuji’s enthusiasm was infectious, and despite the ridiculousness of the past hour, he found himself nodding. “Yeah,” he replied softly, the word barely audible over the quiet hum of the music.
Yuuji crouched by the string of lights, his fingers fumbling with the cord as he reached for the outlet. He glanced over his shoulder at Megumi, who was now bundled under the Christmas blankets, his dark hair spilling across the pillow. Yuuji offered a hopeful smile as he plugged the lights in.
Nothing happened.
The room went silent. Even the music seemed to fade into the background as they both stared at the lifeless string of lights. Yuuji let out a small, nervous laugh, scratching the back of his neck. “Uh... hang on,” he said, quickly pulling the plug out and plugging it back in, his motions a little more frantic this time. He sat back on his heels, waiting for the glow that didn’t come. Still, the lights refused to cooperate.
He unplugged them again, this time letting the cord slip from his fingers to the floor. Yuuji’s shoulders slumped, his head dropping forward, pink hair shadowing his eyes. “I’m sorry, Megs,” he murmured, his voice thick with disappointment.
Before he could say another word, Megumi was out of the bed in an instant, crossing the room in a few quick steps. Without hesitation, he wrapped himself around Yuuji, his arms looping tightly across Yuuji’s broad shoulders. Megumi pressed his face into Yuuji’s neck, his voice soft but filled with warmth as he whispered, “Oh, honey.”
Yuuji let out a shaky exhale, leaning into the embrace as his arms found their way around Megumi’s waist. He held on tightly, burying his face in Megumi’s shoulder. “This was supposed to be perfect for you,” he admitted, his voice muffled and tinged with frustration.
Megumi pulled back just enough to look at him, their foreheads nearly touching. His dark eyes softened, a faint smile curving his lips. “It is perfect,” he said, his tone quiet but firm. “The lights don’t matter.”
Yuuji shook his head, clearly unconvinced. “I worked so hard on those stupid lights,” he muttered, his voice cracking just slightly. “I wanted it to feel magical.”
Megumi’s hands cupped Yuuji’s face, his thumbs brushing gently across his cheeks. “Yuuji my love,” he said, his voice filled with quiet affection. “Lights or no lights, we can still watch the movie. Come on.”
Yuuji blinked, his gaze meeting Megumi’s. For a moment, he looked like he might protest, but then he let out a small, breathy laugh and nodded. “Okay,” he murmured, his grip on Megumi’s waist tightening briefly before he let go.
Megumi tugged him gently toward the bed, the blankets cool and soft as they settled in. The faint scent of pine lingered in the air, mingling with the warm flicker of the candy cane candle. Megumi grabbed Yuuji’s laptop from the bedside table, its surface smooth and cool beneath his fingers as he set it up.
Yuuji nestled closer, their legs brushing beneath the covers as Megumi flipped through the options on the screen. He paused, turning to Yuuji with a small smirk. “Home Alone ?” he asked, raising a brow.
Yuuji chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Classic choice,” he agreed, his earlier disappointment fading as he leaned his head against Megumi’s shoulder.
The movie began, the familiar jingle of the opening music filling the room. Yuuji reached for Megumi’s hand under the blankets, their fingers intertwining as they sank into the cozy warmth of the bed. The world outside disappeared, leaving only the glow of the candlelight, the soft hum of the music, and the quiet comfort of being wrapped up in each other.
The hours slipped by in a warm haze, the sound of Christmas movies blending with soft laughter and the occasional shared kiss. Yuuji’s energy seemed boundless, his voice animated as he quoted lines from The Grinch and enthusiastically hummed along to the soundtrack of Elf. Megumi chuckled quietly at his antics, his heart swelling every time Yuuji leaned in to plant a quick kiss on his cheek or press their foreheads together, his amber eyes twinkling with a joy that was infectious.
Eventually, though, the boundless energy began to wane. By the time they reached A Charlie Brown Christmas, Yuuji’s movements had slowed, his voice growing softer. His head found its way to Megumi’s shoulder, his body sinking deeper into the blankets draped around them. The room was steeped in quiet, save for the faint rustle of fabric and the occasional creak of the bed as Yuuji adjusted his position.
It didn’t take long before Yuuji fell asleep. His pink hair, already disheveled from the hours spent lounging in bed, was now a tousled mess, sticking up in all directions. Soft snores escaped his slightly parted lips, his breaths steady and rhythmic. One arm was draped lazily across Megumi’s chest, while the rest of his body sprawled over Megumi as if to ensure not a single inch of him would be cold. His warmth was a soothing weight, his presence grounding.
Megumi watched him for a moment, his own breathing slow and steady. The soft flicker of the candlelight cast a golden glow across Yuuji’s peaceful face, making the faint freckles on his nose stand out just a little more. The air smelled faintly of pine and peppermint, a cozy blend that made the world outside their room feel far away.
Carefully, so as not to disturb Yuuji, Megumi slipped his phone out of his pocket. The screen illuminated faintly, casting a pale light over his hands as he navigated to the booking site. His fingers moved with precision, typing in their destination and selecting two seats for the train to Yomiuriland.
The quiet tap of the screen was almost inaudible beneath the soft hum of the movie credits rolling in the background. As the tickets confirmed, Megumi let out a barely perceptible sigh of relief. He turned off his phone and set it aside, his gaze drifting back to Yuuji.
Gently, he adjusted the blanket around them, tucking it securely over Yuuji’s shoulders. Yuuji stirred slightly, murmuring something incoherent, but his breathing remained steady, his face still serene. Megumi pressed a kiss to Yuuji’s temple, his lips lingering for a moment against the soft, warm skin before he settled back into the pillows.
The glow of the candle was starting to dim, but the warmth in the room—between them—felt endless. Megumi closed his eyes, letting the steady weight of Yuuji against him and the quiet stillness of the moment lull him into a rare, unguarded peace.
The next evening rolled around faster than Megumi expected. The warm glow of the previous night lingered in his mind as he glanced at the clock. Before he knew it, 4:30 PM had arrived, and both he and Yuuji were dressed in their warmest clothing, ready for the evening ahead. Megumi had taken his time picking out layers that would keep him snug against the December chill: a thick black coat over his sweater, a knit scarf wrapped snugly around his neck, and gloves to ward off the bite of the cold. Yuuji, as always, had opted for something a little brighter—a red scarf tucked neatly into a beige coat, his cheerful energy radiating even in his choice of attire.
Hand in hand, they boarded the train, their fingers interwoven beneath the soft fabric of their gloves. Yuuji had no idea where Megumi was taking him, and Megumi intended to keep it that way. It was hard not to give in to Yuuji’s honey-brown eyes, wide and questioning, or the way his voice turned soft and pleading as he asked, “Can you at least give me a hint?” But Megumi held his ground, managing to resist the pull of Yuuji’s pout and the subtle sway of his shoulders as he begged.
The train rocked gently as it sped through the city, the windows fogging slightly from the heat inside clashing with the frosty air outside. Christmas lights twinkled in the distance, visible even from the tracks, casting colorful glows over the snowy streets below. Megumi smiled faintly to himself, grateful for moments like this—just the two of them, wrapped in the kind of quiet intimacy that felt as natural as breathing.
Yuuji leaned his head against Megumi’s shoulder, one earbud from Megumi’s headphones resting in his ear. The soft strains of Christmas music played between them, shared through the cord that linked them together. Yuuji hummed along faintly, his breath warm against Megumi’s cheek whenever he turned his head to murmur something about the songs. Megumi’s lips twitched upward, barely resisting the urge to press a kiss to Yuuji’s hair. The scent of his shampoo—fresh and citrusy, like the orange peels Yuuji always left on the counter—lingered in the air between them, grounding Megumi in the present moment.
After another half-hour of gentle swaying and shared warmth, the train slowed to a stop. Yuuji looked up, his eyes bright and curious, the corners of his mouth twitching in barely contained excitement. “Are we there yet?” he asked, his voice lilting with anticipation.
Megumi shook his head slightly, his expression as calm as ever. “Just a little walk left,” he said simply, standing and offering Yuuji his hand. Yuuji took it without hesitation, letting Megumi guide him out onto the platform.
The cold air hit them immediately, crisp and biting against their exposed skin. Megumi’s cheeks flushed slightly from the sudden chill, and he noticed Yuuji’s nose turn a faint shade of pink as they stepped onto the snowy pavement. The sun was almost entirely hidden behind the horizon now, the last streaks of orange and purple fading into a darkening sky. The world felt quieter, wrapped in the hush of winter as their breath misted in the air.
“It’s even colder than last night,” Yuuji commented, his voice muffled slightly by the scarf he had pulled up over his mouth. He tucked himself closer to Megumi’s side, their shoulders brushing as they walked toward their destination. The faint crunch of snow underfoot filled the silence between them, a soothing rhythm that matched their steps.
When they finally arrived, it was 5:10 PM. Megumi paused at the entrance, letting Yuuji take in the sight before them. The entrance to Yomiuriland was adorned with strings of glowing lights, each one twinkling like a star against the deep blue of the evening sky. The air smelled faintly of roasted chestnuts and caramel, the sweet scents mingling with the sharpness of the winter breeze. Beyond the gates, the amusement park was a wonderland of shimmering decorations, the paths lined with illuminated arches and colorful displays that seemed to stretch endlessly.
Yuuji’s eyes widened, his mouth falling open slightly as he turned to Megumi. “Lights! There's lights! ” he squealed, his voice tinged with awe.
Megumi’s lips quirked into a soft smile. “Now everythings perfect, just like you,” he said simply, his tone playfully mocking despite the warmth in his eyes.
Yuuji beamed, his excitement spilling over as he squeezed Megumi’s hand. “You’re the best,” he said earnestly, his grin so wide it made Megumi’s chest ache with affection. Yuuji practically bounced on his toes, his earlier grogginess replaced with boundless energy once more.
As they stepped through the gates, hand in hand, Megumi couldn’t help but glance at Yuuji’s face, now glowing with childlike wonder under the golden light of the park. The chill in the air seemed to vanish, replaced by the warmth radiating between them, and for the first time in a long while, Megumi felt like everything was exactly as it should be.
