Whose Goddamn White Baby is That?

Summary:

“Sign “Hi Daddy!” Isha.” Jinx told Isha, giggling into the little girls hair. Isha did so with a smirk matching the one Jinx had on her face.

“Jinx, I’m going to ask one more time, whose goddamn white baby is that?” Ekko pointed at Isha. “Did you steal her from someone? You can’t just go around taking kids!”

Jinx rolled her eyes, crossing her arms as Isha hopped off her lap. “Is that any way to talk about your daughter? Look at her, she looks just like us! Besides, she’s just light skinned.” Isha ran up to Ekko and hugged his leg, giving him her best puppy dog eyes, just like Jinx had taught her.

Chapter Text

“Remember, when we get to Ekko, just follow my lead,” Jinx said, grabbing her hand as they made their way towards the Firelight base. Jinx and Ekko had made amends a few months prior, but she had yet to tell him about Isha. Besides, it was more fun this way.

After Vi had talked Jinx out of bombing the council tower, Jinx had taken in Isha, the little mute girl who had begun to follow her around after she’d saved her from the lackeys of whatever Chem baron had been after her.

Isha reminded Jinx a lot of herself, or of who she used to be, Powder. She had believed so vehemently that the scared little girl in her was gone, that she wasn’t weak anymore, but Isha barreled into her life and made her see things a different way.

Now she was just confused, lost, unsure. She only knew three things, she was going to protect Isha, she would commit her life to it, and she was going to make sure Isha had some fun, Jinx style-which was what they were on their way to do.

Jinx knocked on the entrance of the Firelight base, following the pattern Ekko had taught her. The Firelights were weary of her at first, some of them even wanted to see her dead, but after she began to help with the repairs to build up the City of Zaun, now independent from Piltover, they had warmed up to her a bit.

Jinx winced at the sudden light as the entrance of the base opened, blinking to let her eyes adjust. She glanced down at Isha who was too busy oohing and ahhing at the beauty of the base. Jinx felt a sudden surge of warmth course through her body at the sight. How could someone be so pure, so adorable?

Jinx pulled Isha along as they made their way towards Ekko’s workshop. She’d been there enough times that nobody batted an eye at the sight of her. Now usually, Jinx wasn’t one to knock, preferring to just barge in and make herself comfortable, but if she was going to commit to the bit, she had to make it seem at least a little realistic.

Jinx knocked rapidly on the door three times, shushing Isha when she let out a small giggle. Jinx was holding in a laugh herself.

“I told you I didn’t want to-” Ekko cut himself off as he finally took in who was at the door. He didn’t have his signature white hourglass painted on. Jinx hadn’t seen his face without it in years. He looked handsome stupid.

“Hey, Spaceboy! Mind if we come in for a little chat?” Jinx asked, trying to hide her mischievous grin.

“We…?” Ekko trailed off as he finally seemed to notice Isha standing beside Jinx, who gave him a little wave.

Ekko’s eyes shot up to Jinx, a look of uneasiness on his face. “Jinx, whose kid is that?”

Jinx gave him an unimpressed look. “She’s ours, silly!”

Ekko’s mouth dropped open, he was at a loss for words. Jinx took the opportunity to lightly shove him aside and make her way to Ekko’s workbench, plopping herself down on his chair. Isha followed suit, climbing onto Jinx’s lap.

Jinx looked up at Ekko expectantly. He was still standing by the door, his facial expression seeming to constantly switch between both confusion and fear.

Jinx twisted Isha in her lap so she was facing Ekko, who was eyeing them with a weary expression.

“Sign “Hi Daddy!” Isha.” Jinx told Isha, giggling into the little girl's hair.

Jinx wasn’t aware someone’s jaw could drop that low, but Ekko’s did, if it dropped any lower, it would hit the floor. Ekko rapidly looked between Jinx and Isha, unsure what to say to the pair.

Jinx giggled. “Close your mouth, silly. You’re going to catch flies. I didn’t think you’d be the deadbeat father type, you know? You should really step up to be in Isha’s life.”

Ekko finally shut his mouth, looking at Isha who’d made her way back to Jinx, tinkering with a little glitter bomb. “Jinx, you can’t seriously say she’s ours. We haven’t even kissed! How could we have a kid? And she’s like eight years old, we didn’t have a kid at eleven.”

Jinx sighed, shifting her focus to Isha. “Your father doesn’t want you, what are we going to do! I guess I’m going to be a single mother.” Isha let out a little giggle, sticking her tongue out at Ekko.

Ekko looked like he wanted to scream. Jinx decided to finally stop toying with him and burst out in laughter. Ekko’s face morphed into one of tiredness. Jinx almost felt bad. Almost. Seeing his reaction had been so worth it.

“Relax, Little Man, I was just joking around. Thought you guys should finally meet, you know? Ekko, this is Isha, she started following me around one day and now she’s my problem. And also yours, by extension. Isha, this is Ekko. Also known as, the Boy Saviour, The Leader of the Firelights, and Little Man! He’s your father, he just doesn’t know it yet.” Jinx whispered that last part, but she made sure it was loud enough so Ekko would also hear it.

Ekko let out a sigh, but he walked closer to Isha, giving the girl a little handshake. “Nice to meet you, Isha. Say, would you like to go play with the other kids? Heimerdinger set up some really cool bubble machines I’m sure you’d like to see.” Isha nodded enthusiastically, and Ekko gave her a smile. He made his way to the door, beckoning Isha to follow. Isha looked at Jinx and Jinx gave her a small nod, communicating without words that she was right behind them.

Jinx couldn’t have been happier in that moment, seeing two of her favourite people in the world take a liking to each other. Life wasn’t always the best, but she knew it was going to be fine.

Now she just had to convince Ekko to help her pull the same prank on Vi.

Chapter 2

Chapter Text

Ekko wasn’t sure why he’d agreed to this. After Isha had worn herself out playing with the other kids, she’d fallen asleep in Jinx’s lap, Ekko taking a seat beside the two girls. Jinx had given him her puppy dog eyes with the request, the same ones she’d taught Isha how to do, and Ekko knew he was a goner. He couldn’t have said no to her, no matter what she’d asked.

He was beginning to regret that, he was such a fool for that girl. That was how he ended up on his way to some too fancy Piltie restaurant that probably sold that god awful tea he would be forced to drink to meet Vi and Caitlyn with Jinx and Isha.

He was a bit early, so he hopped off his hoverboard, waiting for Jinx and Isha to arrive so he could go in with them. The plan was initially for the three of them to make their way to the restaurant together, but Jinx had changed her mind last minute saying she and Isha “had stuff to do”. Knowing them, they were probably off stealing from some rich Councillor or vandalizing public property, not that he minded much to be fair.

Ekko leaned against the outside of the restaurant, ignoring the looks he was getting from all the Pilties. It was pretty obvious by his attire and general demeanor that he was a Zaunite, and it was getting him some pretty nasty reactions.

But if there was one thing he knew about Topsiders, they were all bark and no bite.

“Ekko!” His head snapped towards the source of his name, coming from Vi. He smiled seeing her as she pulled him into a hug. Her girlfriend, the giraffe enforcer, was also there.

Ekko pulled away from Vi, giving Caitlyn a little nod to acknowledge her presence which she returned.

“Where’s Jinx? She’s the one who wanted us all to meet. Kind of out of the blue if you ask me, and she asked me to bring Caitlyn! She hates Caitlyn!” Vi shot her girlfriend an apologetic look.

“She’s on her way, I think. She told me she had “business to attend to”,” Ekko made little finger quotes with the words. “Who knows what she’s up to.”

Vi sighed, but Ekko could see the fondness behind the action.

“We should probably head in, our reservation is for 7,” Caitlyn cut in.

“Alright,” Ekko agreed. As they headed in, Ekko couldn’t resist the feeling of contempt that washed over him seeing the opulence of the restaurant. Topsiders were living so luxuriously while the people of the undercity starved, rarely having enough food for more than a meal a day, oftentimes even less than that.

Who determined that their lives were worth more than those of the people in Zaun? Ekko almost felt like a traitor just being in the restaurant without doing anything about it.

It got even worse, there was a whole person whose job was just directing them to their seats. Ekko felt sick. That person probably got paid more than the most hardworking Zaunites.

Ekko was pulled out of his thoughts as Caitlyn tried to start some small talk. She and Vi were sitting across from him, the seat next to him was empty for Jinx.

“So how have you been doing, Ekko? I hear the reparations in Zaun are going well.” Vi nodded along as Caitlyn spoke.

“Yeah it's been going well. Jinx has been a real help, you know. It’s amazing what she can do when she puts her mind to something other than weapons…”

Ekko trailed off, narrowing his eyes at Vi. “Why are you looking at me like that?” She was staring at him with the most amused expression he’d ever seen. It wasn't a look he was new to, she’d often given him the same look when they were kids, but he’d never figured out why.

Caitlyn looked like she wanted to laugh.

Vi waved her hand around, gesturing to something he couldn’t understand. “It’s nothing, go on.”

Ekko looked at her suspiciously. “No. What was that look for?”

Vi grinned. “I just think it’s cute how you’re still pining after my sister the same way you did when you were twelve years old.”

“I’m not pining!” Ekko sputtered out.

Vi raised an eyebrow. “So you don’t like her?”

Ekko looked away. “I didn’t say that either.”

Vi laughed as Ekko scowled at her. He’d changed his mind, Vi definitely deserved what Jinx was about to do.

Speak of the devil, or think of her, Jinx chose that exact moment to plop into her seat next to Ekko. None of them had noticed her arrival. Ekko looked around for signs of Isha, but couldn’t spot her. She was probably hiding somewhere.

“Hey, Ekko. Vi.” She nodded to them both. “And Top Hat Lady.” Jinx giggled a bit at the nickname, and Ekko let out the tiniest laugh, looking away as Caitlyn glared at him.

“Jinx, stop calling her that.” Vi warned.

“I wouldn’t call her that if she didn’t have such bad taste in hats.” Jinx quipped. “Anyways, that’s not what we’re here for! I need to get something out of the way before we eat.”

Ekko sat on the edge of his seat. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was excited, or scared that Vi was going to attack him. She could throw a mean punch, and as good as fighting as he’d gotten, he had no chance of beating her without his hoverboard and crystal bombs.

“Well, go on.” Vi urged.

“Isha, you can come out now.” Jinx called out. A few seconds later, a head of blue and brown hair popped out, dragging a chair to sit at their table with them.

Vi stared at the kid, her face scrunching up in confusion. Caitlyn’s eyes widened, looking between Jinx and Isha, but she remained quiet.

“You’re introducing me to a kid? I don’t understand.” Vi frowned. Isha giggled, looking at Jinx, signing something he couldn’t fully understand yet. He caught one word, stupid .

Yeah, Vi could be a little dense at times. Jinx sighed, but Ekko saw the glimmer of mischief in her pink eyes.

“What, you don’t recognize family when you see it?” Jinx pulled Isha in, ruffling her fluffy hair.

Ekko watched as her jaw dropped, eyes widening. She actually believed it.

“What-when-how?” Vi managed to push out. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Vi, I don’t think-” Caitlyn began to speak but Vi cut her off, barely hearing her words.

“Wait, who's the father? Is he in the picture? I’m so confused, what is going on? I’m an aunt?” Vi’s gasped. “Oh my gods, I’m an aunt!”

Jinx giggled, letting Isha head over to Vi and give her a hug. Was that-Vi was crying. Ekko was trying his absolute hardest to hold back his laugh, he wasn't going to ruin this.

Suddenly, Vi let go of Isha, slowly rising from where she’d crouched down to look up at Ekko. Uh oh. “Jinx, please don’t tell me you had a kid with Little Man.”

Ekko shrugged. “Surprise?” He asked slowly. Vi lunged at him, and he shot backwards, but Caitlyn caught her around the waist, whispering something in her ear that seemed to calm her down. Just a bit.

Jinx was having the time of her life. Her eyes were filled with happiness, Isha’s expression matching hers almost identically. Huh. She really could pass for Jinx’s daughter, if it weren’t for her age.

“And here I was teasing Little Man about his crush on you!” Vi threw her arms up. “The whole time you guys had a kid together? And why isn’t she talking?”

Jinx narrowed her eyes at Vi. “She’s mute! Be nice!” Then, something seemed to register. “Wait did you say crush-”

Ekko hoped his face didn’t give anything away. As Jinx’s head snapped to him. Isha giggled and Jinx lightly slapped her over the head. “What are you laughing at missy?”

Isha signed something back and Jinx blushed, looking away and muttering something back he couldn’t hear.

Vi was just staring at Isha and Jinx interacting, her shock still evident. Caitlyn pinched her nose bridge.

“Alright, I’ve had enough of this! Vi, Isha is not Jinx and Ekko’s child! Not biologically anyway.” Caitlyn said exasperated.

Jinx glared at her and crossed her arms. “Way to ruin my fun,” She muttered so only he and Isha could hear.

Vi looked at Caitlyn, then to Jinx, Isha, and finally to Ekko. “Wait, how could you know that?”

Caitlyn shot Vi an unimpressed look. “Isha looks to be 8 or 9 years old, Vi.”

“So what?”

“So, how old is Jinx?”

“She’s 19, almost 20…Oh.” Jinx cackled as it finally dawned on Vi that she couldn’t have possibly had a kid at the age of ten.

“Yeah, oh.” Caitlyn said sarcastically.

“Jinx! Wait, where did you get the kid if she’s not yours? Did you kidnap her?” Vi’s eyes widened once more. “Oh god, please don’t tell me you kidnapped her.”

Jinx rolled her eyes, blowing her bangs out of her face as she huffed. “Why does everyone always think I’m kidnapping kids? Sheesh, I’m not that crazy, right kid?” Jinx said that last part directly to Isha, who nodded.

Ekko finally spoke up. “You’re definitely that crazy.”

Jinx whipped around to glare at him. “Don’t think I’m done with you, buster. I heard Vi’s comment about that crush of yours.” Ah shit.

Vi interrupted, to Ekko’s relief. “Okay but can we get back to the kid? Where did she come from?”

“Well…"
