The Gods can bear no children.
None at all.
If they cannot bypass a curse that winds tighter every year, then the only possible solution is to find the root of its cause. And, like every other problem, the seeds were planted in their father's palace, hundreds of millenia ago.
Poseidon is chosen to travel back with a mission to hide from the Crooked One's eye and watch for anything at all that could help lift the curse.

A hand covered his mouth.
“SHHHH!” She was being not much quieter than he was but at least she removed her hand once she saw the side eye he gave her, “Some of these trees have been extinct since around the latest centuries of Ancient Greece.”
He looked around. It didn’t seem that different to him. He wouldn’t know though, it’s not like he knew every type of tree that went extinct. He could hardly tell spruce from pine, and pine trees were his father’s trees!
But there was one thing he did know: Annabeth knows everything.
Bile was building, he refused to acknowledge it, didn’t want to. Didn’t want to face the deep churning of unwelcome truth in his gut, “So…what does that mean?”
Knowing full well what it meant, but needing to hear it anyway, he braced for impact.
“We’re in Ancient Greece.”
