Chapter Text

Nunnally vi Britannia

Nunnally the Tranquil, the 100th Emperor of the Holy Empire of Britannia, ushered a new era of peace into the world. She ascended the throne at the young age of 15, succeeding her brother Lelouch the Tyrant, after his assassination mere months into his violent reign. The youngest monarch in Britannian history without a regent, Emperor Nunnally immediately set to work righting the wrongs Emperor Lelouch had inflicted upon the world. She soon gained the support of independent peacekeeping organisation the Black Knights, particularly the Knight of Justice Zero, who would often accompany Emperor Nunnally to public events as security against warmongering terrorists.

Dismissing her father Charles the Conqueror’s aggressive foreign policy, Emperor Nunnally sought to rebuild Britannia’s relationship with the rest of the world through diplomacy rather than war. She oversaw Britannia’s admission into the United Federal Nations, and was instrumental in establishing the International Judicial Court where disputes between countries can be settled peacefully. Despite the loss of Britannia’s Areas during Emperor Lelouch’s reign, Britannia soon returned to prosperity through Emperor Nunnally’s promotion of free trade and other socioeconomic policies.

Throughout her 50 years of rule, Emperor Nunnally contributed significantly to UFN humanitarian work, addressing in particular the issues of forced displacement and children in armed conflicts. She advocated strongly against the use of child soldiers, abolishing conscription in the Britannian military and increasing the enlistment age from 14 to 20. She also directed the reformation of the prison system in Britannia, most significantly the abolition of the death penalty. Much of this can be attributed to Emperor Nunnally’s turbulent childhood, which she has claimed to be her motivation during numerous speeches.

Emperor Nunnally was most well-known for transforming Britannia into a constitutional monarchy, with a prime minister and parliament elected from the general public. She abdicated her throne to her niece Eudora li Britannia at the age of 65, and has since retired from the public eye.

That was how history remembered her—and her brother, all the blood he spilled in the name of peace. Nunnally was fine with it. Really, she was.

Notes:

obviously Nunnally didn’t personally accomplish ALL the things accredited to her, she had plenty of help, but the in-universe author of the biography omitted a lot of details. to be fair that was meant to be a summary of Nunnally’s life, but I wanted to make a point about history oversimplifying things to create a narrative where Nunnally is Good while Lelouch is Evil. the biography wasn’t exactly propaganda but it (like most of the history books about Nunnally) ignored all the complicated minutiae. for example most people don’t know Nunnally held the button to launch the FLEIJA and agreed to the plan to nuke the world :D

I don’t think Britannia emperors have epithets in canon, but epithets are cool so it’s canon to me now;) I debated between Lelouch the Tyrant and Lelouch the Dictator, but decided to have Lelouch and Nunnally’s epithets alliterate while having opposite meanings:) for poetic reasons:):) also I wanted to contrast Lelouch the Tyrant with Charles the Conqueror, which has considerably less negative connotations and is sometimes even used positively to describe historical figures. Lelouch is remembered even less fondly than his father :):):)

as for Nunnally’s abdication, I feel like Nunnally would retire once she has accomplished everything she wanted to achieve as emperor. she probably finished all her work at year forty-something of her reign, then waited for a few more years to reach her 50th anniversary before retiring

Eudora is Cornelia’s daughter. she’s named after Euphemia, which google says stands for “well-spoken” in ancient Greek. as much as Cornelia wants to, she won’t name her daughter Euphemia or Euphie because even though Lelouch’s atrocities overshadow Euphie’s in people’s minds, Euphemia still went down in history as a name associated with massacre and betrayal. Cornelia isn’t stupid enough to inflict such a legacy on her child for sentimentality’s sake. hence Eudora, which means “good gift” in ancient Greek and shares roots with Euphemia’s name, but is still different enough that Cornelia has plausible deniability. Eudora has pink hair too;)
