i guess i'm just difficult

Summary:

annabeth chase had grown up wearing the word "difficult" like an ill-fitting hand-me-down sweater. it never quite felt right, but she couldn’t seem to shed it, no matter how much she tried.

her father had said it first, his tone clipped and weary after a long day of work. she’d been five, maybe six, sitting at the edge of his office chair and tugging on his sleeve, desperate for his attention. she had just learned about the parthenon and couldn’t stop herself from sharing every fact she could remember.

Work Text:

annabeth chase had grown up wearing the word "difficult" like an ill-fitting hand-me-down sweater. it never quite felt right, but she couldn’t seem to shed it, no matter how much she tried.

her father had said it first, his tone clipped and weary after a long day of work. she’d been five, maybe six, sitting at the edge of his office chair and tugging on his sleeve, desperate for his attention. she had just learned about the parthenon and couldn’t stop herself from sharing every fact she could remember.

“annabeth, please,” he’d sighed, rubbing his temples. “i’m busy. can’t you go play somewhere else? you’re being difficult.”

she didn’t understand the word at the time, but the sting in his voice lodged itself in her memory.

her stepmother wasn’t any kinder. annabeth tried, at first, to fit into the mold her stepmother wanted. she put away her books when she was asked, kept her comments to herself during dinner, and even let her half-brothers borrow her crayons—until they broke every single one.

but it was never enough.

“why can’t you just be like other kids?” her stepmother would ask, exasperation heavy in her voice. “you’re so stubborn, annabeth. so difficult.”

annabeth tried harder. she stopped asking questions altogether, retreating into her books and sketchpads, drawing towers that stretched to the heavens and labyrinths no one else could navigate. but silence didn’t help. if anything, it made her invisible.

by the time she ran away at seven, she’d started to believe the problem wasn’t her circumstances—it was her. she was too much. too loud. too smart. too broken.

she thought she’d left all that behind when she found luke and thalia. for a while, it felt true. luke called her “smart” and “brave,” words that felt like gold coins after years of being called “difficult.” he treated her like her plans mattered, like her voice deserved to be heard.

but even luke had his limits.

“don’t be like that, annabeth,” he’d say when she challenged one of his decisions. “you don’t have to make everything so hard.”

it didn’t happen often, but it happened enough to remind her that even here, with the people she trusted most, she still had to tread carefully.

when she arrived at camp half-blood, annabeth was ready to prove her worth all over again. she threw herself into training, learning, building. she mastered her dagger before most kids her age had even chosen their weapons, sketched out new blueprints for the cabins, and memorized every greek myth in chiron’s library. she was determined to be indispensable—to be something other than “difficult.”

then percy jackson showed up, and everything shifted.

at first, he annoyed her. he didn’t seem to take anything seriously, stumbling through camp with a mix of confusion and bravado that made her roll her eyes. she didn’t expect him to last more than a week.

and then he survived the quest to the underworld.

and somewhere along the way, annabeth realized there was more to percy than met the eye.

he wasn’t like the others. he didn’t try to fix her or mold her into something easier to deal with. he didn’t flinch when she snapped at him, didn’t look at her like she was a problem to be solved. he just... listened.

one day, they were sitting by the lake after sparring practice. annabeth had been frustrated with herself for losing her temper during a fight, her words coming out sharper than she intended. she was

expecting percy to make some sarcastic comment, but instead, he tilted his head and asked, “why do you get so mad at yourself when you mess up?”

annabeth froze, caught off guard. no one had ever asked her that before.

“i don’t know,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “i guess i just... don’t want to be a disappointment.”

percy frowned, like the idea of her being a disappointment didn’t make any sense to him. “you’re not a disappointment, wise girl. you’re the smartest person i know. you just care too much about everything, and that’s not a bad thing.”

it wasn’t a grand declaration, but it stuck with her.

percy didn’t treat her like she was difficult. he treated her like she was worth understanding. like her sharp edges didn’t need to be smoothed out, just held carefully.
when she snapped at him for holding a nail wrong while they fixed a cabin roof, he didn’t take it personally. “got it, wise girl. i’ll just hold the ladder and keep my opinions to myself.”

when she got frustrated during strategy meetings and started pacing in circles, he didn’t tell her to calm down. he just waited, his expression calm and patient, until she worked through her thoughts.
and when she couldn’t sleep, haunted by memories of monsters and betrayals, percy didn’t try to give her advice. he just sat with her, his presence steady and grounding, until the nightmares seemed smaller.

for the first time, annabeth began to wonder if being “difficult” wasn’t the curse she’d always believed it to be. maybe it wasn’t about being too much—too intense, too demanding, too sharp—but about finding someone who saw her exactly as she was and didn’t want her to change.

she wasn’t ready to admit it then, not even to herself. but in the quiet moments they shared, when percy was just percy and she could let her guard down for a little while, annabeth felt something unfamiliar bloom in her chest.

acceptance.

and, though she wouldn’t have dared to call it that yet, hope.
