Story 6 of 12

Day 7- Hot Chocolate

Notes:

I can't get the Hot Chocolate song out of my head from Polar Express. Was singing it the entire time I wrote this story.

Title inspo came from these lyrics
Hot! Hot!
Oh, we got it!
Hot! Hot!
So, we got it!
Hot! Hot!
Yo, we got it!
Hot chocolate!

Here, we've only got one rule:
Never ever let it cool!
Keep it cookin in the pot,
You've got-
Hot choc-o-lat!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tommy walked through the door; phone held to his ear. “I don’t know Howie, I’ve barley stepped in the door. I haven’t even given my husband and daughter a kiss, I have no clue if we’re bring your kids with us tomorrow.”

Evan caught his end of the conversation and frantically shook his head at Tommy reaching for his phone and pulling it from his ear. “Wait, Evan, Howie. Okay bye.”

“No, Chim. I told Maddie we need a Kinard family date. I love my niece and nephew, but we’ll take them another time. And you can blame Uncle Buck that’s fine.” Evan smiled as he wrapped his arm around Tommy’s waste. Leaning into him. “Now, excuse me while I go spend some time with my husband. I haven’t seen him in forty-eight hours. No, you don’t want to know what I am talking about, Chim. Our daughter is taking a nap. Do with that what you will.”

Tommy chuckled as Evan brought the phone away from his ear and ended the call. “Hi.” Tommy smiled at Evan and leaned in to give him a kiss.

“Hi. Evie is taking a nap, and I really, REALLY need my husband’s attention right now.”

Tommy groaned, “You have it baby. Lead the way.” Evan smiled and reached his hands up, running them down Tommy’s chest as he pushed him back toward their bedroom.

Tommy groaned as he collapsed next to Evan. Both men breathing heavy. “That…has… to be… some… sort of record… for us.” Tommy panted out.

“No. We’ve gone longer before.”

“Since becoming parents?” Tommy asked reaching up and running his hand along Evan’s thigh.

“Well, no. Our baby girl seems to monopolize our time, doesn’t she?”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way.” Tommy smiled.

“Neither would I.” Evan rolled toward Tommy and planted a kiss on his lips, just as the very subject of their conversation made her presence known.

“I got her.” Tommy said, rolling out of bed and pulling on Evan’s discarded sweats.

“Hey! What am I supposed to put on?” Evan called after him and Tommy just laughed.

Tommy came back in a few minutes later. Evie clutched in his arms babbling away.

“You don’t say, daddy said that did he?” Tommy loved to talk to Evie like he understood her. “Tell me more baby girl.” Evan smiled as Tommy sat down crossed legged on their bed, Evie nestled in his lap.

“Well, thank you for asking. Dada had to fly over a lot of trees today.” Evie babbled. “I know it’s unbelievable, but I did. I swear it.” Evan just laughed at the one-sided conversation Tommy was having with their daughter.

“What are you going to do if she wants to fly over the trees one day?”

“Oh hell no. My daughter will be safe on the ground.” Evan smiled; he knew Tommy didn’t mean it. They had both agreed that they would never discourage their kids from pursuing whatever their heart desired.

“Yeah, just like she’s never allowed to date.”

“Exactly. You hear that, Evie Mae? No boys. Boys are icky.”

“Hey, she may be into girls. And in case you forgot, we’re boys. I for one don’t think you’re icky.” Evan corrected him.

“Alright, fine. But no dating until you’re thirty.”

“That’s better.”

Tommy sat and played with Evie as Evan got up and went in to clean up. “What do you want for dinner?” Evan called from the bathroom.

“I just want to sit at home and order something. I need tonight with my baby girl and my husband.” Tommy replied.

Evan came out and kissed Tommy on top of his head. “My thoughts exactly. I’ll see what we have in the kitchen.” Tommy smiled and stood from the bed pulling Evie into his arms as they all left the bedroom. Tommy didn’t want to be away from either of them for a second.

Tommy looked at Evan in the passenger seat, something was on his mind. “You’re fidgeting. You, okay?”

“I’m fine. Just excited.” Evan smiled at Tommy, but it was missing his eyes.

Tommy reached over and linked his hand with Evan’s as they pulled into the parking lot of their destination. When the got out and started walking toward the entrance, Tommy looked over at Evan and narrowed his eyes.

“You okay, Ev? You look like you’re about to be sick.” Tommy watched his face closely.

“I’m, uh. I’m fine. Just, god what is that smell?” Tommy looked at Evan, something was up.

“What smell?”

“It’s smells like pure tooth achily sweet sugar. Just making me a little nauseous.” Tommy looked at him, concern growing on his face.

Once they were inside the gates, and Evan finally promised Tommy, he would tell him immediately if they needed to leave, Evan pulled Tommy over to the ‘Polar Express Café’

“This is cute.” Tommy said looking around.

“I want Hot Chocolate. Grab us a table? I’ll go order.”

Tommy nodded his head and found a relatively clean table, pulling Evie’s stroller close.  Evan walked up behind Tommy and kissed his head, wrapping his arms around Tommy from behind.

“I love you.” Evan whispered and Tommy stiffened.

“Are you really Okay, Evan?” Tommy asked grabbing hold of Evan’s arm to pull Evan in front of him.

“Yes. I can’t say I love you to my husband anymore?” Evan tried to laugh.

“No. I mean, yes you can. But baby, you’re shaking. And you’ve been fidgeting all morning. What happened the other day? Did everything really go okay at your appointment?” Tommy asked, and he could feel the panic rising in his chest. “Do we need to see a specialist? Like, Evan my mind is going a hundred miles a minute here with worry.”

Evan placed his hands on Tommy’s face, forcing him to focus only on Evan. “Whoa, baby. Calm down. I’m fine.” Evan was about to tell him they’d talk more later, Tommy felt it.

“No, we’re talking about it now. Please Evan, please. I’m freaking out.” Tommy grabbed Evan by the back of his thighs and pulled him close as he felt hot tears in his eyes and Evan reached up to wipe them away.

“Baby, Okay, okay. Just. I’m fine I promise. Just take Evie’s jacket off. Okay, just take her jacket off. I’m going to get the drinks.” And Evan turned to walk away but Tommy caught his hand, making him stay put.

Tommy did as he asked, and he started to straighten the shirt she had on underneath. Tommy’s eyes widened and he gasped. “Evan? Really?” He asked. A smile coming to his face.

“Really.” Evan smiled, handing Tommy a gift bag.

Tommy reached in and pulled out a line of ultrasound pictures and a white onesie with a little yellow helicopter on it that read “Dada’s co-pilot”

Tommy laughed and pulled Evan close. Resting his forehead against Evan’s belly. “You’re pregnant again?” He asked, barley above a whisper. Evan was running his fingers through the back of Tommy’s hair as he answered.

“Yeah. About ten weeks, almost eleven. Total surprise. Probably happened in Hershey. When…”

“You forgot your birth control.” Tommy looked up at him. Eyes beaming with pride. “Wow.” Tommy wanted to say more, but Evan pulled from his arms stating he really wanted that hot Chocolate. Tommy laughed and told Evan to sit down, he walked up and retrieved their order.

“Are you okay, babe? Happy?” Evan asked. And if Tommy knew his husband, a little nervous.

“Of course I am. I can’t wait.” Tommy beamed at Evan; he really was excited about this. “When are you due?” He asked looking at the pictures of their baby.

“Estimated August eleventh. Roughly. You know how it goes.”

“Yup. Wow.”

“Yeah, I need you to have a conversation with your little swimmers and tell them, if we decide to do this again, no more summer pregnancies. I barely made it through Evie’s.”

Tommy laughed and nodded his head. “Yeah, I’ll get right on that.”

Tommy reached over and grabbed hold of Evan’s hand. Smiling at him. As they sat and drank their hot chocolate Tommy couldn’t help but imagine what their future held. With a new baby on the way, the thought made him feel almost giddy inside.
