I'm Not The Problem

Summary:

San needs space. Wooyoung needs a better look at social cues.

Notes:

This is based on Ateez's interview on Radio Idol. This is something to be ready as before and after the show. You don't need to watch it to understand, just now there was some tension between the boys and we don't know why.

Have fun and check out my other works in this series, plus the others!

Work Text:

Everyday. It was the same everyday. Wooyoung would without a doubt find his way into San’s bubble. Now San had no problem with it. He was used to the broken boundaries. But lately, San has had about enough.

San would wake up and there’s Wooyoung. San would eat breakfast and there's Wooyoung. San would relax in the dorm and there’s Wooyoung. It was aggravating. San loved Wooyoung. He was a precious band member, friend, platonic lover as some would say. However, that did not make up as an excuse for them to be around each other every second of their on screen and off screen time.

“San-ahhh!” A shrill pitched voice made its way through San’s ears.

“Wooyoung.” San deadpanned the younger member.

San and Wooyoung were known for their cute ways of addressing each other and their members. The past few days San has given up, in hopes Wooyoung will get the hint.

Hope is dead.

Wooyoung hopped his way over to San, who was seated on the edge of the couch scrolling on his phone. He wrapped his arms around the older and nuzzled his face in their neck.

“You smell nice. Did you change shampoo? Perfume?” Wooyoung sniffed a couple times.

San dropped his hand, holding the phone in his lap. “Stop, please.”

“Mhmm. Someone’s grumpy this morning.” Wooyoung squeezed tighter and giggled.

“Wooyoung I mean it. I am not in the mood.” San wiggled out of Wooyoung’s grip and stood up, walking away.

Wooyoung stayed put, confused by the other’s actions. He noticed Hongjoong and Mingi hovering in the kitchen observing.

“What’s his problem?” He mumbled to no one in particular.

The day went on as it normally would after that. They had a small scheduled meeting with their manager about their interview later and were released after that. It was only 11 o’clock, so a couple of the members had ideas to go out.

“I want to go shopping. I need some new shoes. These are losing their colour.” Seonghwa chimed up first.

“Shoes don’t lose colour, they get dirty.” Jongho side eyed his hyung.
“Either way, I still need new shoes. Who wants to come?” He turned to look at the group.

“Eh why not. I could use a new coat.” Yunho fiddled with the coat he was wearing.

“I will too. Someone has to make sure you two don’t go overboard with shopping for one thing.” Jonho snickered.

“Remember to meet at the dorm at 4 o’clock so we can head out together.” Hongjoong reminded.

The three of them nodded and popped in the elevator and left the building with a manager in tow.

“I think I’m gonna head up to the studio to look over some tracks with Maddox.” Honjoonged stated, which surprised no one.

“Oh can I join? I wanted to show you guys some of my new ideas from last time.” Yeosang piped up.

Honjoong nodded and they both headed upstairs to the studio.

“I am going to practice something me and Yunho were working on, so I’ll see you guys later.” Mingi smiled and left for the dance studio.

San moved his head and set his gaze on Wooyoung. Could he possibly get some alone time, or is he kidding himself?

“I’m gonna head back to the dorm. I’m kinda tired.” San treaded carefully, focusing on Wooyoung's face.

“Okay! I’ll join.” Wooyoung slid his arm around San’s and dragged San downstairs and out the doors, then into the car.

San sighed, but let Wooyoung drag him. Once they got home and he went to his room, Wooyoung would leave him alone and play games or something.

Once the car made it to their dorm, they exited and their manager let them be. San jumped out and quickly made his way to the door, punching in the code and entering the dorm. Wooyoung was, of course, not far behind. The door was pushed back open when Wooyoung came through.

“Sannie, wanna play a game? Or watch a movie? We have the whole dorm to ourselves for like hours.” San felt a familiar presence on his waist. Wooyoung had yet again wrapped his arms around the older.

“Wooyoung I want to lie down while there is peace and quiet.” San pried Wooyoung's hands off of him and walked towards his bedroom.

“Come on. You really want to spend your time sleeping. Just sleep after the interview and spend time with me.” Wooyoung pouted and opened his arms, coming at Wooyoung.

“No! Wooyoung please. Stop touching me for 5 minutes!” San couldn’t help it. He was tired. He was done with being nice and expecting Wooyoung to pick up on context clues.

“What?” Wooyoung paused in front of San and let his arms fall to his sides.

“I just… need a minute okay? Please.” San gave Wooyoung a begging look and walked into his bedroom, shutting the door.

Wooyoung stood in place, shocked at San’s outburst.

‘Stop touching me for 5 minutes.’

It replayed in Wooyoung's head. No matter how many times it did, he still didn’t understand it. They were Woosan. They were soulmates. A matching tattoo and being the most popular ship might be a bit misleading, but they knew what they had. Their friendship was precious. So why does it feel like San just stabbed him straight through the heart?

Wooyoung shook his head and went to his own room. San was just tired, like he said. He had been grumpy earlier and he barely spoke during the meeting. Wooyoung should have seen the signs. He just needs to sleep it off and then they can have their usual fun during the interview.

San bowed his head and sighed when he noticed his door stayed shut and there wasn’t any sound from the other side. He tossed his phone onto his desk and sat down on his bed. A nap would help. He flung the blanket over him and closed his eyes, drifting off.

A couple hours passed by and eventually the rest of the members made there way back into the dorm. Seonghwa and Yunho came in carrying a few bags with Jongho behind them on his phone. Then Hongjoong and Yesoang entered laughing over some sort of joke the manager said. Then lastly, Mingi stumbled in running straight for the bathroom. Wooyoung heard the ruckus and exited his room.

“What did you by hyung?” Wooyoung looked to Seonghwa.

“Just a pair of shoes… and a bit of jewelry.” He chuckled. “There was a sale.”

“Be glad that’s all he got. I had to swerve him away from the legos.” Jongho rolled his eyes.

“Well San can’t eat what you don’t have.” Wooyoung remarked.
Seonghwa and Yunho went and put away their items, while Hongjoong came over with a cup of coffee. “What did the rest of you do?”

“Mingi was in the practice room and San took a nap while I played some games.” Wooyoung recalled.

“Better go wake San up. We have to leave in about 30 minutes so we won’t be late.” Wooyoung nodded and skipped to San’s room, knocking on the door.

“Sannie-ah!” He called out when there was no answer.

Hearing no response, Wooyoung opened the door and waltzed in. San was lying on his side, facing away from the door. Wooyoung approached and put his hand on the older shoulder.

“Sannie. You have to get up.” He said gently.

San stirred a bit and groaned. Wooyoung smiled and sat down, petting the others hair.

“Your such a baby.” Wooyoung giggle and leaned down, throwing his arm around San and rolling him over onto his back. “Up! Lets go.”

San groaned again and opened his eyes. He glanced to Wooyoung and sat up, shaking the others arms off.

“I’ll be out in a minute.” He stood up and went to his closet to change.

Wooyoung, clearly missing signals, went up behind San and squeezed him tightly.

“Wooyoung I have to change.” San did not have the energy to fight the other off.

“Oh come on. I’ve missed you and your cuddled all day. You just slept, stop being grumpy.” He pouted.

“Later.” San enunciated and Wooyoung reluctantly let go.

“Fine. Come eat before we leave.” Wooyoung left with that.

San sighed deeply and changed quickly before leaving the room. The others were all scattered around the kitchen and the living room. He made his way to the coffee pot, where Hongjoong had just finished brewing more. He poured himself a cup and grabbed an apple off the counter.

“Are you feeling okay, San? You normally don’t take morning naps.” Mingi asked, taking up the space next to him.

“Yeah, just been a…” How could he describe it without being an a-hole? “Frustrating day.” He took a bite of the apple and moved to sit on the couch.

That was a mistake.

San had apparently not noticed Wooyoung sitting on the other end, past Yeosang, who was originally being snuggled up too. However, now Wooyoung has a new target. A target that regrets his mistake, but in the nicest way possible.

“Are you in a better mood now, Sannie?” Wooyoung scooted over and snuggled up to San.

San tensed up, really wanting any sorts of peace. He had it for a bit with his nap, but he wished it would continue. He just really wanted Wooyoung to understand boundaries.

“Wooyoung. Please go back to Yeosang. I’m sure he misses you already.” He tried to smile and gesture to Yeosang, but Yeosang was far gone.

San lolled his head back and tried to lift his arm out of the strong grip. Wooyoung didn’t budge. San tried to lean forward and get his arm out again, but Wooyoung just sat up with him, eyes starting at whatever was on the TV. San looked over the youngers figure and saw everyone had migrated towards the kitchen to clean up and get ready to clean. He was alone in this.

“Wooyoung, let go.” San stated and closed his eyes.

“Sannie~” Wooyoung whined.

“Wooyoung. Let. Go.” San let his voice raise just a bit.

“Mhmhmm~” Wooyoung wiggled over, causing San to just snap.

“Jung Wooyoung! Let me the fuck go!”

San stood up abruptly and Wooyoung arms slowly fell down. San felt guilty for cursing, so he turned to apologize, but before he could he heard a small sniffle.

“Wooy-”

“Let’s go boys! The others are already in the car.” Their manager peaked over the door.

How had he not noticed it was time to go? Did anyone else notice their argument?

“We’re coming.” A small voice said.

Wooyoung. San wanted to apologize, but the other had already up and went out the door. San let it go and followed. He will apologize later.

The car ride was more silent than usual. Everyone seemed to noticed. Hongjoong was at the front as usual with the manager. Seonghwa, Yunho, and Wooyoung had taken the back row. Mingi and Jongho were in the third row. Then Yeosang and San were in the second row.

Most the time, there was a little bickering or a short game, but today it was almost silent. Wooyoung kept to himself on his phone. San glanced at him every now and then, while the others seemed to be confused.

Once they made it, they filed out and into the building, evading most the press. They were guided to a studio room where they greeted the host of the This Idol Radio and took their seats. The show ran as normal with questions and funny antics. Even the dance section was fun. Wooyoung and San had a dance to Fake Love prepared, and it went as anyone would normally expect. Wooyoung laughed the whole time and San smiled at him. It was after that surprised the members. As soon as the dance ended, their energy seems to deplete. Wooyoung went straight back to his seat and San stood and watched him before going to his.

The rest of the interview went fine and they finished up quickly, They were loaded back into the van and taken back to their dorm to rest before tomorrow. Hongjoong hopped out first and went inside, followed by the rest. San and Wooyoung were the last ones in.

“Both of you. Sit.” Hongjoong stood waiting by the couch. The two complied and sat. Wooyoung purposefully scooted away from San.

“Explain to me what is going on with you two? And don’t try to deny it. It was clear there was some tension.” Hongjoong crosses his arms.

“Um we just had an argument before we left. I accidentally shouted and cursed, but I didn’t get to apologize before we had to leave.” San stated and looked over to Wooyoung.

Wooyoung kept his head down and made no reaction. Hongjoong turned to him.

“Wooyoung? Is that it?” Wooyoung finally lifted his head. Tear tracks could be clearly seen and his eyes were turning red.

“Yeah that’s it. Nothing else. Can I go to bed now?” Wooyoung glared at San before standing up and attempting to head to his bedroom.

Something caught his wrist. He looked down to see San staring up at him, gently. He just scoffed and glared before ripping his had away.

“I thought you didn’t to be fucking touched.” He spat and tried to walk away again, before he was stopped by Hongjoong.

“Wooyoung. Stop.”

“What? Am I wrong?” Wooyoung’s tears threatend to fall as he looked to San. “Don’t forget the way you’ve treated me all day. No nicknames. No cuddles. No nothing! You’ve been pushing me away no matter how hard I try! What is your stupid problem?!”

That was San’s final straw.

“I’m not the problem!” San interupted Wooyoung. He stood up and went to face Wooyoung.

“YOU are. You can’t pick up on anything! Do you not think there would be a reason that I wanted you to stop touching me? To stop using nicknames hoping you would understand I needed a minute? To just take a nap because I needed some little time to myself? You are right here every second. I have boundaries Wooyoung, just like everyone else. If Yeosang tells you to stop, you normally do if you tell he’s getting tired. Why not with me? Why should I have to tell you more than 3 times to stop doing something when I’m uncomfortable? Tell me please because I do not understand.” San’s voice cracked towards the end and stepped back.

Wooyoung stood silent, so San continued when no one else butted in either.

“I love you, Youngie. I just need space sometimes. I can’t express what I think like you. I just snap when it’s too much. I need you to listen to me when I say things. I love you so much, and I still love your hugs, but some days there just too much for me.” A few tears dripped down and he leaned back looking to the others.

They were a little surprised, but knew this could only be fixed by the two of them. Hongjoong gave San a small smile and whispered for the others to go to their rooms. Once they were gone, San turned back to Wooyoung. He could see the the boy’s shoulder slightly shaking.

San moved forward and watched Wooyoungs fist clench. “Wooyoung. I am not mad and I don’t hate you. Do you hate me?” Wooyoung shook his head.

“Are you mad at me?” He shook his head again.

“Then tell me what I can? I promise if you hug me now I won’t make you let go.” San tried to smile and chuckle, but Wooyoung stayed silent. San was about to give up when…

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to be sorry.”
“I do. I was a horrible friend. I overwhelmed you all day to the point you had to yell at me for your point to get across.” His voice was small, but he finally lifted his head. “So I am sorry.”

San opened his arms up. “I forgive you.”

At that, Wooyoung threw himself into San’s arms and let San tug him closer. They stood like for a few moments before San spoke up.

“Want to sleep with me tonight?” Wooyoung nodded furiously and San chuckled.

“Do you promise to respect my wished on boundaries, if I do my best to explain my feelings a little clearer?” San asked.

“I promise.” Wooyoung smiled.

San took the younger’s hand and led the both of them the bedroom.

Everything was fine. Nothing was heard from the room after that. Seonghwa even took it upon himself to crack open the door to check in on the two. They were curled up on San’s bed snuggled up under the blankets, sleeping peacefully. Seonghwa grinned at the sight and shut the door.

No one could split up Woosan. Not even Woosan themeselves.
