Work Text:
The day Bob finished school because of Thanksgiving break, he and Phoenix packed their bags and started to drive a little over eight hours up north to the Bay Area. Since they went back to North Carolina for Thanksgiving last year and Pheonix wasn’t able to fly because of how pregnant she was, they decided to drive up to San Francisco to spend it with Pheonix’s family. When they arrived and relaxed after checking into their hotel, they grabbed a quick bite to eat with Phoenix’s family before resigning for the evening.
Now they’re getting ready to head to the house where Pheonix grew up where many of Pheonix’s family members are there. Phoenix was already dreading this Thanksgiving not because she was entering her third trimester, more like some of the family members that already irritate her.
“Remember just give me the signal when you want to leave,” Bob told his wife as they pulled up to the house.
“Oh, I will,” Natasha said before leaving the car.
Bringing the boxes of cookies and pies out of the car, they headed into the house. Being greeted by Toby, the family dog, Bob, and Pheonix smelt the food cooking in the kitchen.
“Ah, Natasha, Robert,” Yvonne, Phoenix’s mother, stepped away from the stove and greeted them.
“Where is everyone?” Phoenix asked.
“Your brothers and father are getting some last-minute ingredients,” Yvonne rolled her eyes at her sons’ and husband’s forgetfulness.
“We can help you,” Phoenix offered as she rubbed her bump.
“You can help with the sides,” Yvonne told her daughter. “Don’t overdo it. If you need to rest, please rest. You’re in your third trimester, get as much rest as possible. Robert, you can also help until my husband and sons return from the grocery store.”
Nodding their heads, Phoenix and Bob helped Phoenix’s mom with all the sides she was making. Soon Phoenix’s father and brothers came back with bags in their hands.
“When you said to get a few things?” Phoenix questioned her mom.
“Oh, a majority of things,” Yvonne sighed and chuckled.
Shaking her head, Phoenix went over to her brothers and father to greet them. Bob did the same thing before returning to help with the food. Soon more members of the Trace family entered the house bearing drinks, snacks, and other dishes for dinner. They have also brought the soon-to-be parents presents which thankfully the couple has enough room in the car.
Bob and Phoenix were relieved from their cooking duties so they headed to the living room to sit on one of the couches. More like Phoenix was sitting on the couch while Bob was playing games with their nieces and nephews. Phoenix admired the view before her knowing that her husband would be a great father once their daughter entered the world.
“Alright, dinner is ready! Go grab a plate,” Victor, Phoenix’s older brother, announced.
Soon everyone got up from their seats and went to fill up their plates.
Six hours south of the Bay Area, Mav, his husband, and the rest of their kids were at Bob and Phoenix’s house getting their nursery set up. Even though it’s Thanksgiving and they still had plans to celebrate with takeout Goose and Carole are bringing over since nobody wanted to cook.
As the walls were almost dry from the paint, everyone started to assemble the pieces of furniture Bob and Phoenix recently bought. Well minus the crib since all of the dads in the group think it’s a rite of passage for the soon-to-be father to struggle building his daughter’s crib.
“They’re gonna like it right?” Frtiz asked.
“Yeah, Phoenix sent me the nursery theme she and Bob wanted,” Halo reassured everyone. “Alright.”
Halo wiped her hands and stepped away from the changing table with a satisfied look on her face, she and Coyote moved it to where it was going to be. After an hour or so of building and rearranging the furniture, the nursery was complete minus the crib. Right on time, Carole and Goose arrived at the house with boxes of Chinese takeout in hand. Thanking the couple, everyone dived into the food they ordered.
*Few Days Later*
After spending a few more days in San Fransico, Sunday Phoenix and Bob packed up their bags and checked out their hotel before starting the eight-hour drive back to Miramar. They had some rest stops to use the bathroom and to get food for the ride. They enjoyed the time with Phoenix’s family knowing the next time they would see them is when their daughter would be born.
“Home sweet home,” Phoenix said as Bob helped her out of the car.
Unlocking the door, the couple placed their bags down on the floor before going back to the car to get the gifts everyone got for them and Baby Floyd. Taking the bags of baby clothes and plushies to the nursery, Phoenix’s eyes widened as she saw what was inside.
“Bob!” She called her husband.
Rushing to his wife, he paused in his steps as he entered the nursery.
“Did they?” Bob looked around the nursery to see everything built
“I think so,” Phoenix chuckled as she saw the box which contained the crib.
Walking up to the box, Bob ripped off the note and read it.
It’s a rite of passage for the father to build his child’s crib- The Fathers of the Flyboy Squadron
Chuckling, Bob handed his wife the note and they let out a laugh. Placing the gifts away, Phoenix and Bob texted the group chat thanking them for setting up the nursery.
Decompressing from the long travel day, the couple decided to order pizza and put on a movie.
“Crazy that she’s coming soon,” Phoenix said as she rubbed her bump.
“Just two more months,” Bob smiled as he touched Phoenix’s bump. “We still don’t have a name.”
“It’s gonna come to us,” Phoenix said. “Now let’s start this movie.”
Chuckling at his wife’s response, he grabbed a slice of pizza and they started watching the movie together.
