Work Text:

Relationship: Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter
Prompt: (Object) Wand

Neville Longbottom watched as Ron Weasley ranted and raved about Harry Potter and his name coming out of the Goblet of Fire, making himself the fourth Champion in The Triwizard Tournament. It took a lot of self-control for Neville to sit back and listen to the redhead.

Harry should be Neville’s best friend – not Ron’s. Neville won’t be jealous, like Ron. instead, Neville would be a loyal and supportive best friend and he would understand that Harry wasn’t a willing participate.

His eyes widened as he realized this would be a perfect opportunity to befriend Harry. If he was lucky, he would take his rightful place as Harry’s best friend and convince Harry to complete their bond as godbrothers.

Standing up from his bed, Neville grabbed his wand and his cloak before leaving the dorm and heading down to the common room. His mind was racing as he quickly pieced a plan together.

He needed to start by checking on Harry. While they weren’t close, Neville knew Harry. Harry disliked the attention and he loathed his fame – and Neville knew Harry well enough to know that he didn’t enter the tournament.

Neville frowned as he looked around the common room. The party was crowded with butterbeers and food being passed around, and more Gryffindors gathered around. Most of the gathered crowd was watching the entrance or shooting glances around.

Frowning, Neville decided it would be best to wait for Harry in the hallway.

He quickly exited the common room, watching the portrait close behind him. The hallway was empty – minus the numerous portraits. Neville frowned, noticing there were extra figures hanging around the portraits. Uncertain where to find Harry, Neville leaned back against the wall near the Fat Lady.

As he waited, Neville thought about what he wanted to say. This was his chance to earn Harry’s loyalty and friendship, and he needed to be careful. It wouldn’t do to denounce Ron as much as he wanted.

He needed to let Harry come to his own conclusions about the redhead. Neville needed to think about how to phrase things. Neville wanted to be open and friendly without being too eager or pushy. Basically, he needed to find a way to let Harry knew he supported him and believed he hadn’t entered himself in the tournament, and Neville was there if Harry needed someone.

A few minutes later, Neville pushed himself off the wall and he approached the portrait. Harry was slowly walking down the hallway.

Harry looked uncertain as he stopped in front of Neville.

“They’re, ah,” Neville began, nervously shifting from foot to foot. “The Weasley twins organized a party, and a lot of the House is waiting around.”

Harry sighed, his shoulders slumping.

“Opinion is divided,” Neville continued. “Most believe you either entered yourself or you got an older student to do it for you.”

Harry nodded, his expression closed off.

Neville thought about what to say next. “I believe you didn’t enter,” he stated. “If you need anything, let me know.” He offered a small smile.

Harry met Neville’s eyes and he nodded before turning to the Fat Lady. He muttered the password.

The portrait opened.

Harry entered the common room with Neville a few steps behind.
