What’s In A Name?

Summary:

Hermione is very picky about her tea, and she might have found the perfect cuppa at a coffee shop around the corner from her DC flat. If only the cute owner could spell her name correctly.

Work Text:

The bell above the door chimed cheerfully as she entered the cosy coffee shop. Hermione took a deep breath as the smell of freshly ground beans mingled with the faint scent of rain from the damp street outside. Letting the door close behind her, she took a moment to peel off her raincoat, which caused droplets of rain to cascade onto the worn wooden floor. She stepped towards the counter and nodded to the barista, a man a few years her senior with shoulder-length brunette hair pulled back into his usual low ponytail, who was busy with a steaming espresso machine.

“The usual, Minnie?” he called out as he finished the order he was working on. It was nearly an identical greeting she’d heard almost every morning for the past three months, even though she had corrected him more than once.

She started to correct him again, but the smile that played on his lips made her chuckle. “Yes, please. And no rush, I don’t have to be in the office until ten today.”

“Sounds good.”

“Do you have any new flavours of scones today?” Hermione asked as she peeked at his bakery case.

“How does dark chocolate orange sound?”

Her eyes lit up as she glanced back up at him. “Oh, yes, please. You are a man after my own heart, aren’t you?”

“Maybe.” He winked. He had the most amazing blue eyes she had ever seen, and she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement. The two of them had been playfully bantering back and forth since her first day walking in. As a teenager, she would’ve blushed at his flirting, but now, she enjoyed the older man’s attention, even if she figured nothing would come of it.

The barista, whose name she had discovered was James, had a playful streak that she found surprisingly charming. A few weeks after learning his name, he told her his friends called him Bucky, to which Hermione said she would call him Bucky as soon as he stopped using the ridiculous nicknames he’d taken to calling her.

She sat at her favourite table by the window to wait for her order and watched the pedestrians hurry by as they tried to dodge the intermittent raindrops. The café was a warm sanctuary in the bustling heart of Washington, D.C., and she had grown to cherish her morning ritual here.

As she sat there, her mind wandered a bit.

James was not your typical coffee shop owner because he had a passion for tea that nearly rivalled her own. He sourced exotic blends from far-off lands, and he knew the exact temperature and brewing time of every single one. The tea menu was a testament to his dedication and was something she had never seen before. Still, he also had a fair amount of options available for those who enjoyed the bitter brew of coffee or even creamy hot chocolate. Hermione had tried many items from his menu, most of which were from his tea collection, but she had taken a chance on a couple of his coffee items. Nevertheless, she always ended up returning to his teas; her favourite was a rather delightful blend of Earl Grey that she ordered with a splash of milk and a spoonful or two of sugar, depending on the day. It was perfect, and she found herself looking forward to their little dance of names every morning. It was a small price to pay for the perfect cup of tea.

Hermione was pulled from her thoughts as the bell chimed again when the door opened. A gust of wind sent a swirl of rain into the shop ahead of a young woman. She had wet hair, wore a tired expression as if she was finishing her day, and shivered as another gust of wind followed her. Hermione felt a pang of sympathy for the young nurse. She knew all too well the feeling of being caught in a downpour without an umbrella.

“Just the usual,” the woman murmured to James, who nodded knowingly. “You got it, Liz,” he said, starting on her order.

The whir of the milk frother grew louder as James crafted Liz’s drink as Hermione’s finished brewing. When he finally placed her items before her, Hermione realised they were alone in the shop again as Liz had left to go home. Looking down, she first noticed the delicious-smelling scone.

“I cannot wait to try that. It looks amazing.”

James beamed. “Thank you.”

Reaching for the steaming cup next to the plate, she was surprised to see something written on the side. She picked up the mug for a closer look. It said one word: “Hermione.” She grinned up at him.

“You got it right!”

He smirked as the bell over the door jingled again. “Took me long enough, right? This is for you.” He handed her a folded napkin before turning to the newcomer. “Steve, buddy! How are you?”

Hermione watched as James greeted his longtime friend and took a sip of her tea, the taste soothing her like a warm blanket.

Opening the napkin to dig into her scone, Hermione found a number written on it. She grinned. It was his mobile number.

She enjoyed her tea and scone as a steady stream of customers came in from the outside elements.

As she was preparing to leave for work, his voice called out, “See you tomorrow, Hermione.”

Slipping into her coat, she shivered as her name had never sounded so delicious. “Have a good day, Bucky.”

The smile he gave her had her heart racing as she stepped back into the rain. Maybe something might come of their flirting after all.
Her cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and a strange warmth that was becoming all too familiar. She stepped out into the now-cleared street, the rain retreating to a gentle drizzle. The cool air was refreshing after the warm embrace of the café. Hermione took her time walking back to her office, savoring the Earl Grey that seemed to hold the essence of comfort itself. As she approached the imposing building that housed her workplace, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement. It was a new day, and she had a surprise waiting for her.

The previous evening, she had decided to take a page out of James's book. She had spent hours researching a rare and exotic tea blend, something she hoped would intrigue him. The result was a small package that had arrived early that morning, all the way from the misty mountains of China. The scent of the leaves alone had been intoxicating, promising a taste that would challenge even his refined palate.

As she entered the lobby, the echo of her heels on the marble floor seemed to carry a hint of anticipation. She took the elevator up to the 15th floor, her heart beating a little faster with each ascending ding. The office was a blur of cubicles and chatter, but she had a mission that transcended the mundane. She set her tea gift on her desk, a silent declaration to the universe that she was ready for whatever the day had in store for her.

Her morning flew by in a whirlwind of emails and deadlines. It was only when the sun began to set, casting a warm glow through the office windows, that she remembered her mission. Gathering her courage, she grabbed the small package and made her way to the café, her heart thumping in her chest. The rain had returned, a gentle rhythm that matched her quickened steps.

James looked up as she entered, his blue eyes lighting up in recognition. The café was quieter now, the after-work crowd replaced by a few lingering regulars. She approached the counter, feeling the weight of his gaze on her, and placed the package before him.

"For you," she said, her voice a little shakier than she had intended. "A little something to expand your tea horizons."

He cocked an eyebrow, a smile playing on his lips. "I see you've been busy," he said, his tone teasing. "What's the occasion?"

"No occasion," she replied, hoping she sounded casual. "Just thought you might like it."

James carefully unwrapped the paper, revealing the delicate leaves nestled within. He inhaled deeply, his eyes closing in appreciation. "This," he said, looking at her with a newfound respect, "is quite the gesture."

The air between them grew charged, and Hermione felt her cheeks burn. She had never done anything so bold before, but something about James brought it out in her. He studied the package for a moment longer before looking back at her, a question in his eyes.

"Would you like to stay and have a cup with me?" he asked, holding up the leaves.

Her heart skipped a beat. "I'd love to," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

And so, they sat in the dimly lit café, sharing stories and sips of the exotic tea. The rain outside painted a serene backdrop to their conversation, which grew deeper and more intimate as the night went on. Hermione felt something stir within her that she hadn't felt in a long time: a connection that went beyond the superficial, a spark that hinted at something more.

As they talked, the tea leaves whispered secrets of distant lands, and she found herself lost in the warmth of his smile and the depth of his knowledge. With each shared experience, she felt a bond forming, a thread weaving through the fabric of their lives, drawing them closer together.

The café emptied, the rain outside growing heavier, until it was just the two of them and the gentle patter of raindrops on the windowsill. James leaned closer, his hand brushing hers on the table. The moment hung suspended in time, charged with potential.

And just like that, their friendship took a turn she had never expected. The realization hit her with the force of a thunderclap: James wasn't just a charming barista with a knack for teasing her.
