Chapter 1: Never Ever Getting Rid of Me (Waitress)

Chapter Text

It was a nice day at Hogwarts, the sun was out, there were barely any clouds, and there was a slight breeze, dusting a light snow over the campus. Harry enjoyed days like these. Sometimes when Ron and Hermione were busy or it was a weekend he’d come out by the great lake and sit, just enjoying nature.

He, Ron, and Hermione were walking in the hallway, on their way to transfiguration class because it was just Harry's luck that on one of the nicest days of the year there's class. They were about to turn a corner when all of a sudden yelling could be heard from down the hall.

A Hufflepuff boy was soapboxing to Malfoy, who looked unimpressed and frankly, bored. In the end, the boy gave up, stomping away while muttering less than child-friendly words as Malfoy rolled his eyes. The girl next to him, whom Harry identified as Pansy, laughed.

“Having fun? This must be the fifth time the same guy has pestered you about why you should free your house elves, honestly Draco with that amount of passion you would think it’s a love confession” she teased, pushing his shoulder playfully.

“Oh please,” Malfoy scoffed, “I get no satisfaction witnessing his acts of ‘passion’.” he said, walking away.

Pansy’s eyebrows furrowed as she followed him down the hall, “odd wording but okay…”

Harry turned to Hermione, who had a puzzled expression on her face, “what’s up ‘Mione?”

“I’ve heard that line before. I think it was with my parents in New York…” her eyes widened, “I didn’t know Malfoy was a fan of Hamilton”

“Whats’a hamilfgn?” Ron asked, chocolate frog in his mouth

Hermione sighed, rolling her eyes, “nevermind”

~~~
Hermione was deep in thought, unable to focus on professor Mcgonagall’s lesson.
If she was correct and this wasn’t some weird coincidence, Malfoy liked Hamilton. If Malfoy liked Hamilton then what other muggle things did he like? That is, if he even knew Hamilton was a muggle musical.
If he did know, and still liked it, then that only posed more questions. Why would a bloodpurist who hates muggles like muggle things?
Did he even hate muggles?
Sure, Malfoy called her a mudblood but he hadn’t done that since third year. In fact, she hadn’t heard him say anything bloodpurest at all recently.
Had Malfoy really changed?
Hermione was so lost in thought that for the first time ever, she didn’t have an answer when Mcgonagall called on her out of the blue in class.
~~~

Walking back to the Gryffindor dorms after classes, Harry turned to Hermoine, “Are you okay? You looked distracted the whole period and even got a question wrong.”

“Yeah ‘Mione, you okay?” Ron asked, concerned

Hermione snapped out of her thoughts, “I’ve just been thinking about Malfoy”

Ron looked a mix of worried, horrified, and disgusted, “oh no, my best friend’s got a crush on Malfoy of all people, are you mad?”

“I mean, he does have pretty eyes” Harry offhandedly remarked, only to stop when Ron shot him a dirty look.

“Honestly Hermione, Malfoy of all people?” Ron whined

Hermione scoffed, “I don’t have a crush on him dimwit.” she looked around and once she saw the coast was clear stopped, “I’ve been thinking about that thing he said this morning”

The boys gave her a look that said they had no clue what she was talking about.

Hermione sighed, “the muggle reference. He made a comment that happened to be a lyric from a muggle musical. I’ve been wondering if it was deliberate or not. If so, then maybe Malfoy isn’t as anti-muggle as we thought, if not-”

“-then you’re just overthinking, as always.” Ron finished

“Malfoy not a bloodpurist?” Harry asked, a slight hopeful tone in his voice.

“We don’t know yet, it’s just wishful thinking.” Hermione said

Ron impatiently tapped his foot on the floor, “Guys, as much as I would love to talk about the possibility that Malfoy isn’t a total bloodpurist, dinner’s starting in an hour and I would like to drop my books off at the dorms.”

“You guys go ahead, I’m going to catch up on some studying in the library… unless you’d like to join me?” Hermione offered

Ron, looking absolutely horrified, dragged Harry away, “nope, see you ‘Mione”

~~~
As she entered the library, Hermione saw Malfoy sitting alone at a corner table, reading a book. She decided to approach him.
“Hey Malfoy.” she said, sitting down across from him at the table.
Malfoy looked up at Hermione sceptically, “Need something, Granger?”
“Actually, yes. I didn’t know you were a Hamilton fan”
Malfoy’s face paled slightly, before he regained his composure, “I have no clue what you’re talking about”
“You made a Hamilton reference this morning.” She pointed out.
“No i didn’t”
“Yes you did. You literally quoted Washington on your side”
“Or maybe I just spoke?” Draco said, bored
“I know what I heard”
Draco groaned, "you're just non stop" he muttered, “You obviously don’t. Now leave me alone, Granger”
“...look, Malfoy, if you change your mind and want my help… all you gotta do is say my name” Hermione said before getting up and leaving the library
Malfoy sat, dumbstruck for a moment, before his eyes widened and he scoffed, going back to his book and muttering “Beetlejuice, really Granger?”
~~~

Hermione may not have gotten Malfoy to admit it then, but she promised herself that eventually she’d get him to admit that he wasn't as much of a bloodpurist prick as he said he was.

~~~
Hermione spent the rest of the night laying in her bed, wide awake and contemplating how to get Malfoy to admit that he at least liked Hamilton.
Hermione decided to stay the winter break — which started that weakened — at Hogwarts since she heard Malfoy was too. Harry was going to stay too as things with Ginny were getting rocky and he thought it best not to bring their relationship problems into the burrow.
Eventually, having come up with the perfect idea, she drifted asleep.
Chapter Text
It was the Sunday before winter break, Hermione had decided to give Malfoy some space before then to make him think she had forgotten about his not-Hamilton references.
She hadn’t.
~ ~ ~
“Are you sure you can’t come back to the burrow? You and Ginny will work everything out, you always do” Ron said, it was his fifth time trying to convince Harry to come to the burrow for the holidays.
“Ron, mate, I’ve already made up my mind. I'm staying here.” Harry said, sighing.
Ron tended to be a bit pushy sometimes, he was used to getting his way with Harry, as the other boy had only recently learned how to say no. Hermione stepped between them,
“Ron, we’ll see you after break. It’s only two weeks” Hermione reasoned.
Ron sighed, “I know, I guess I’m just gonna miss you guys.”
“We’ll write to you” Harry said as the trio began walking to platform 9¾ to drop Ron off.
Once they arrived, Hermione spotted Malfoy saying goodbye to his friends, Parkison and Zabini.
“Are you sure you’d like to stay? My mother would always be glad to host you at our home for the holidays” Parkinson offered Malfoy taking his hands in hers
Behind Hermione, Harry made a noise somewhere between a gag and a scoff.
“I’ll be fine, Pans, really. I gotta go my own way” Malfoy said reassuringly
“There! Right There!” Hermione said, walking up to Malfoy and his friends in what was perhaps the most impulsive decision of her life.
“What?” said Zabini, more confused than irritated
“lLegally Blonde? Really-” Malfoy scoffed, before stopped himself
“I knew it!” Hermione exclaimed, “you like musicals!”
“I told you before, Granger, I have no clue what you’re talking about”
“Hermione-” Harry said, “Lets not start a conflict right before break”
“Yeah Granger, stop before someone gets hurt.” Malfoy smirked
Was he serious?
“Really Malfoy? Mean Girls? What’s next? You’re going to dance in a sexy Santa outfit?” she said, how did nobody get that these were obviously references?
“I wouldn’t mind that” Harry mumbled, earring an odd look from Parkinson and an elbow from Ron.
“Just leave him alone, Granger. He has no clue what you’re talking about” Zabini glared.
“Are we just going to ignore-” Parkinson started, before Ron cut her off.
“For once I agree. This is out of hand ‘Mione” he said, and with that, the conversation was over.
~ ~ ~
As Harry and Hermione waved goodbye to Ron, Harry turned to Hermione, “do you think Malfoy might actually dance in a-”
“No, Harry! It was a reference towards-” she sighed, “never mind”
Hermione walked away, a mildly disappointed Harry following close behind her.
~ ~ ~
With no more classes and no more Ron, Harry spent the following Monday in his room thinking.
About what? Hermione couldn’t care less, she had bigger issues to focus on.
Malfoy was sitting alone at lunch in his usual spot, though since it was break the house tables were disbanded, meaning you could sit wherever,
And sit wherever she did
“I’d like to apologize for yesterday.” she said, sitting next to Malfoy.
“...It’s fine, I suppose. All I ask of you is that at the end of the day-”
“Phantom Of the Opera and Les Mis.” Hermione deadpanned
Malfoy smirked, “or I was just talking? Ever think of that Sherlock”
“See now you’re just making muggle book references.”
“I have no clue what you’re talking about”
“You just-” she sighed, “you know i wouldn’t judge you”
“Why do you even care, Granger?” He asked, more curious than mocking.
Hermione shrugged, “if you like musicals then you don't hate muggles, if you don’t hate muggles then I have no reason to hate you.”
Malfoy paused, seeming to consider this.
“...well, I don’t like musicals. But if I did, nobody could find out– which is why you wont go blabbing your suspicions”
Hermione, deciding that she probably wasn't gonna get anything else out of this conversation, nodded and got up, “Okay, see you around, Malfoy”
~ ~ ~
Back in the Gryffindor dorms,  Hermione knocked on Harry’s room (as all his dorm-mates had gone home for the holidays)
There was loud banging, clashing, and the sound of someone falling before Harry opened the door.
“Hi” he said, out of breath
“Hi… I just talked with Malfoy.”
Harry’s eyes widened before he dragged her into his room, which was a mess.
“Is he okay? Hurt? Sick? Did something happen?” he asked, worried
“No, Harry- he’s fine.” Hermione sighed, “Though I’m now almost 100% positive that he likes musicals.”
Harry looked confused, “Why do you care if he likes musicals or not? I mean, I guess it’s always good for a man to appreciate the arts, and even better if he can sing…” Harry sighed dreamily, before turning to Hermione at full attention, “You don’t have a crush on Malfoy, do you?”
“No I do not have a crush on Malfoy” —Harry let out a breath of relief — “It’s just if he likes musicals then he likes a muggle form of media, if he likes a form of muggle media then he can’t hate muggles. If Malfoy doesn’t hate muggles….” Hermione said, prompting harry to finish the sentence.
Harry’s eyes widened and he smiled, “Then he’s literally perfect-” Harry stopped talking when he saw Hermione’s face, “..what?”
“I… nothing, Harry.” Hermione sighed, “but, yes, it would be good if Malfoy wasn’t a blood purest for a variety of reasons.”
Hermione, noticing that Harry was no longer listening, shook her head and left the room. Knowing him he was probably fantasizing about the possibility that Malfoy would marry a halfblood without knowing why.
It both amazed and saddened her how oblivious her friend could be.
Notes:
harry is so me in this fic, oblivious 'till the end 😞
