Work Text:
Even before his brothers came knocking at his door, Jason was having a shitty day. His favourite copy of The Outsiders got damaged by the rain this morning while he was rushing to a lecture, He found out his next clinical placement was post-surgical recovery again, and he was running late because his roommate walked into him and spilled coffee down his shirt and he had to change. The final straw was seeing his siblings at his door.
“Hey B’s out on a mission and he hasn’t been home or checked in for a couple days”
That was all that stopped Jason closing the door in Dicks face.
What the Fuck?
“Dick. What the fuck do you mean he hasn't even checked in?” Jason's first thought was that this was some kind of ploy or prank to make him go home for the holidays this year but he could see the exhaustion on Dicks face, and the messy tired look in his siblings and he knew this wasn't a joke. Bruce Always checked in at least once a day when he was gone for more than a week if only to make sure his kids hadn't killed each other.
Dick sent all but Tim to go find a diner or cafe they could get breakfast at. Damian looked like he wanted to argue but one look from Carrie and the two followed the others out of the room.
“All he told us is that he has some big case. He was working with the league and they needed his input. He's been gone for a couple weeks and he stopped checking in four days ago, we thought it might be a loss of reception or incognito work, but…” Tim's voice trailed off, and he lost the calculating look that he'd had before, now just looking drained.
Dick finished Tim's explanation
“He always lets us know if his missions would require radio silence, and he said something in his last check-in that doesn't sit right with any of us.” Dick pulled out his phone, pulling up the JLA message box that Jason had kept muted for the past year.
“He said something about ghost stories and these two brothers he'd read about who caused a lot of fuss a couple decades back when they went on a spree around America supposedly getting rid of demons and ghosts. It didn't make any sense to me, but he sounded sure that the brothers might have been tied to this case and if he was right then this really isn't good.”
Before he knew it, Jason’s bag was packed and he was out the door.
