Summary
At the end of the hall, the door was slightly ajar, voices spilling out from inside. Thomas hesitated, just for a moment, his hand hovering over the handle. He had spent the ride rehearsing what he’d say—something polite but distant, to keep himself safe. But now, standing at the threshold, he couldn’t think of the words. He pushed the door open.
“…And I’m just saying, if you’re going to eat six burritos, you better commit to the consequences.”
“Six? That’s restraint for me,” came another voice, dry but amused.
Two boys looked up at him. One was sprawled on the lower bunk, his dark hair messily falling into his eyes, his posture too comfortable, too confident for Thomas to fully trust. The other was sitting cross-legged on a desk chair, with ruffled blond hair and a soft, approachable grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“You must be Thomas,” the blond one said, standing and offering his hand.
Thomas hesitated for a second before shaking it. “Yeah. I’m Thomas.” His voice came out.
