The door swung open as the bell chimed, signaling everyone to turn their heads. Everyone turned to see a shivering Dazai entering, sweeping snow off his shoulders and taking his coat off and earmuffs.
“It is damn cold around this time!” He complained, huffing.
Kunikida rolled his eyes while he greeted Dazai, who promptly handed the blonde a case of alcohol to put up. Kunikida went to set it up on the table walking away while Ranpo approached.
“I’m going to try eating twelve grapes this year!” Ranpo exclaimed cheerily, which made Dazai snort.
A flushed Yosano laughed, already too drunk to make sense of it all.
Kiyoko and Kenji had been off in a room to the side watching cartoons and colouring, oblivious to the party happening in the common room.
Atsushi was sitting tensely in the corner, sipping awkwardly on a can of beer.
The young adult shuddered as Dazai went up to greet him, to which Dazai giggled.
“So tense, Atsu-shi! You have got to chill~” He joked, earning him a glare.
He waved as he went to grab a can himself, walking towards the table Kunikida had gone off to.
He leaned against the table as he sipped, observing what was a party. Dazai was not your typical party person, but he figured it wouldn’t hurt him to show up and make some small talk. Plus the free alcohol wasn’t that bad of a thing either.
The party for the most part was small; The Tanizaki siblings had not attended, Yosano was drunk, Kunikida was keeping things going smoothly, Atsushi was anxious, and Ranpo was Ranpo. He slumped, feeling the alcohol now. Slowly he slipped away to the exit, He had enough of the luke-warm party (no offense to his coworkers!) He also had a few others in mind to visit, he had 3 hours left before the years changed, and he was determined to make it work.
He approached the familiar area, in the farther ends of the graveyard stood a lone tomb. His dear friend, Odasaku. Dazai kneeled, placing a can of beer he had brought with him, a small offering to his friend. “Happy New Year's Eve, Odasaku.” He muttered, smiling. He sat for a bit, talking to the stone, about whatever crossed his mind. Before he knew it an hour had passed and he was saying his goodbyes to him, until the next time.
He still had one more person to see.
His boots left wet snow marks as he walked the halls, entering the elevator, the warm smell familiar and welcoming.
The levels raised, bringing him home.
He opened those doors, holding a bouquet he had quickly bought from a store running a new years deal. “I’m home, chibi!” He shouted.
“Shut it! Don’t call me that!” Chuuya Nakahara complained, walking into the kitchen before stalling.
“Flowers?” Dazai extended his hand, offering them to the man.
“Thanks.” Chuuya said, accepting the offer while blushing red.
He floated them to the table, to be handled later as he ran to hug his boyfriend.
As the hug dissipated, he looked up towards him.
“Do you want to go watch the fireworks go up in 30 minutes?” Chuuya asked.
Dazai smiled, nodding as he followed Chuuya onto his balcony.
The snow had cleared by now, and his balcony plowed. The wind had a chill but as they laid on the outside couch together they found warmth not to be a problem.
Chuuya played with something residing in his pocket.
As the time approached, Chuuya had gotten up, Dazai following.
“You know Dazai, Kissing on New Years is an old tradition, started by ancient Rome. Did you know that?” He asked.
Dazai admitted that he did not, actually know. The two made an awkward silence before being broken as Chuuya had brought Dazai closer, Dazai leaned as the two met lips, the soft warmth being pleasant, the sky lit up with colours as the fireworks started, the kiss was perfect and time felt still.
Before they knew it, the kiss was parted.
“Happy New Years Dazai.”
“Happy New Years Chuuya.”
Chuuya hesitated, which Dazai picked up on.
When questioned what was wrong, He knelt down, reaching his hand into his pocket.
“Osamu, We’ve been together since we were 17. Now at 23 I am sure of what I want.” He started, presenting the ring to the now teary-eyed Dazai, smiling.
“I want to be your Husband. I want to get married. I can get the papers forged.” Chuuya asked.
Proposed.
Dazai wasn’t sure he was worthy of this love, the love Chuuya provided,
But in this moment he didn’t have it in his heart to be selfless.
He made, in his opinion, one of the most selfish options he could have.
“Yes. Chuuya- yes. I want this so much.” Dazai accepted, He knew by doing this would only inevitably cause harm to Chuuya, he shouldn’t be doing this, but he couldn’t bring himself to fix this.
He hugged the ginger, before embracing for another quick kiss.
Chuuya spent a long 3 seconds putting on the ring.
It was a beautiful ring, a gold frame with 2 small diamonds, intertwined.
Dazai thought it couldn’t be any more perfect than this.
Maybe life was bad,
Maybe life took alot from him,
Dazai wasn’t a god-fearing man, but in this moment
He found himself hoping to god this would last, that he for once in his life, could keep this.
Dazai couldn’t ask for much more.

“OH MY GOD!?” Yosano screamed, smiling as she grabbed Dazai’s hand, staring at the ring splayed out on his finger.
“You got engaged??” She said, giggling. Her and Ranpo were the only ones who knew whom though.
“Yeah, he asked me over the weekend!” He chirped.
Kunikida scoffed, “as if anyone would marry this lunatic. I’m convinced he’s playing a prank!” he exclaimed.
Atsushi sighed, “I’ll give Dazai the benefit of the doubt.” Atsushi turned to look at Dazai before smiling. “Congratulations Dazai! I’m happy for you.” He said, sounding genuine.
Dazai grinned. “See! Thank you Atsushi!”
Kyouka spoke up.
“Chuuya Nakahara?” She asked, She had put two and two together, after the reveal of Dazai being the demon prodigy, and the two diamonds-? It was a barely hidden secret!
Pen drop.
“Dazai.” Kunikida said, grim.
“Please don’t tell me..” He said.
..
He got his answer from Dazai’s expression alone.
“Damnit Dazai! He’s from the Port!” Kunikida argued.
Ranpo spoke up, “Well technically we are in a truce right now.” He defended Dazai.
Dazai looked at him appreciatively.
Kunikida went quiet, before sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose, hand on his hip.

It was a nice day at the agency.
