A Sadly Needed Necessity

Summary:

Basically they go camping and Impulse makes an oopsy and Tango has to help make it right.

RANCHERS

BLAZE TANGO MY BELOVED

Notes:

This little series? (At this point it could be one fic, or I could make like a few different fic in a series) Is a college AU in which the Lifers met through mutual friends and eventually became quite close with each other and they decide to go on a joint camping trip.

TW: Kisses and gay men

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tango and Jimmy and most of the other campers sat at a few little picnic tables, in the middle of a clearing. His rancher (that’s what they called each other) was giggling, letting out a few very much birdlike twitters and tweets, at something Tango had said. Tango felt himself titter along with Jimmy. When their laughter subsided they stared at each other, Tango observed a faint blush that dusted Jimmy’s cheeks, his eyes drifted down to where Jimmy’s lips were parted slightly, he thought about how Jimmy’s and his lips had slotted together the night before, Tango felt his own face heat up.

“Gah!” Jimmy and Tango both turned towards the sudden noise. Impulse stood there staring down frustratedly at the sad excuse of a fire that he was trying to light. Skizz was currently doing something at that moment, so Tango decided to go comfort his discouraged friend. Tango saw out of the corner of his eye as he stood up, Jimmy had that birdish look of confusion before turning to the rest of their table (Lizzie and Joel) and chatting to them.

As Tango neared he saw, quite clearly, that the wood that Impulse was currently trying to light, was damp. Oh that simply wasn't going to light. It had rained the day before they had gotten there, so their tents were safe, but the ground and leaves and grass and wood were still wet. Surely Impulse knew that that wasn’t going to light?

“Hey, buddy!” Tango said cheerily with a bounce in his step. “What’s the matter?”

“This stupid fire won’t light!” Impulse said exasperatedly.

“Did you not bring any dry wood, Impy?” At his question Impulse looked to the side and avoided Tango’s gaze. “Oh, you didn’t!” Material to poke fun of, perfect. “Really, Impy, the one who plans for absolutely everything, forgot one of the most important things?”

“Oh stop rubbing it in my face.” Impulse said, his voice was low but there was really no bite to it, he turned back to Tango and suddenly there was a bit of panic on his face. “Tango, your hair!”

Tango glanced up and tried to push the flames down as they grew. When he looked back to Impulse there was a large smile on his face and Tango could almost see the gears turning in his head. “What?” Tango asked nervously.

“I know how to solve this problem.”

Impulse then proceeded to ask Tango to sit on the ground and let him use his hair to cook their breakfast. Tango was very against it, at first. There was a little shouting (mostly from Tango), which caused Jimmy and Skizz to both come over to see what all the commotion was about. Jimmy’s presence settled Tango’s offence, but he was still reluctant.

Until Jimmy turned to him after hearing out Impulse’s idea. “Tango, if you do it, I’ll give you kisses.” Tango thought it over, the pros outweigh the cons.

“Fine, I’ll do it… On one condition though,” he turned to Jimmy. “I require one kiss before I make such a sacrifice, from you, my rancher.”

Jimmy blushed at the name before he nodded and leaned down to Tango, he kissed him and Tango osculated back. It was nice until it was broken by a shout of, “Get a room!” That was most definitely Joel’s voice, leave it up to Joel to ruin a moment, and at the same time there were a couple wolf whistles.

The two men broke apart to see their peers staring at them, Tango and Jimmy both flushed. They stepped apart and Jimmy rushed back to their picnic table, and Impulse’s hands were on his shoulders guiding him to kneel on the ground and he felt the flames of his hair lick up at a pan that Impulse held above his head.

When Impulse was finally done cooking everyone’s breakfast, Tango stumbled to the table he was previously sitting at. Impulse walked him to the table and patted his back sympathetically, even though Impulse was the jerk that made him sit on the ground and be his campfire. Tango checked out for a moment and put his head on the table and encompassed his head with his arms. He distantly hears Impulse’s voice then Joel’s and Jimmy’s. When he sits up again he and Lizzie are alone at their little table. They chat with one another when suddenly a shriek rips through the air.

“Tango!” His rancher was calling his name. Tango jumped up and sprinted off in the direction of Jimmy’s voice.

TBC…

Notes:

You'll get the next part of this series in a couple of days, hopefully I finish it before I have to go back to school.

I didn't realize until the very last minute that copying a fic from my docs to Ao3 does not include italics. I'm heartbroken. If anyone knows how to make it so I can have italics, please tell me.
