Work Text:

Bittersweet - Pleasant memories marked by suffering or regret.

Key has a headache. His mind splitting - between Divinity and Earth. The strength awarded to him is more than he’s ever needed to kill.

His heart breaking, splitting between devotion and loathing.

Everything in the Ravine is double. Two sided. One side calling out for war, revenge. Overturn everything in the city. Everything out of Key’s reach as a child, will never be withheld again. The undead will carry out the consequences of his neglect. Anger will reign in his kingdom to come.

The other side is calling for peace. Love. Key’s father believed there was good in the world, he wanted to believe too. He wants to be good in the way his father hoped he would be. It’s so hard to believe. Key thought he found his group of people - that also saw the way Eyam was corrupted. They were going to fix it. He had hope. Key still hopes, despite what he saw with his own eyes. The words she said, what she did.

Each side of Key that the pit splits open just crashes right back into each other. Key doesn’t know if his body exists anymore, but he can feel the crashing. In his bones, his blood, his heart.

The anger caused by the kingdom leads to hope he will be back. The hope of being back leads to anger of everyone he will face - everybody who left him, everybody who offered nothing but led him to become the Villain of the Cauldron. Hope that that he will see his… people, the ones who understood him. The one who led him. He hopes to see Rahela. And that hope is destroyed by his anger, thinking of all the ways he could get her back. He could kill her. He’s capable.

This anger overwhelms him. It’s so much he becomes numb, because there is nothing he can do here, in the Ravine. He doesn’t know how to get out - yet. It’s painful, being stuck with only anger and hope as comfort. He thinks of Her to distract himself. Her eyes, Her room. How different she is compared to her reputation, and how she never considered his. He falls asleep the memory of her kiss.
And wakes up with rage.
