Work Text:

‘Cold.’

Was all Thoma thought as he patted the space next to him in their bed. Ayato had come to bed with him that night, which was already unusual, and it wasn’t as if Thoma didn’t understand how important Ayato’s work was both to him and his nation, but it still hurt sometimes, Ayato was his husband after all.

Thoma had often wondered how different their lives could be if he and Ayato were two different people. They had a quiet wedding a few years ago, inviting only close family and a few friends, a sacrifice on Thoma’a part as he had always wanted a wedding as grand as his love for his partner. But again, he understood Ayato had to sacrifice a lot to marry him in the first place and his desire for a bigger wedding didn’t change much for him, his love never wavered.

Thoma thought about dragging himself out of bed to go drag Ayato from his desk, but he was tired, not only because he’d woken up and didn’t even know what time it was, but because he felt ignored in his own marriage, he felt like an observer of his own life. Thoma was by no means a selfish person and would sacrifice the world if it meant saving those close to him but he felt as though he was left to sleep alone more than usual and while nothing on earth could make him love Ayato any less, he felt as though his husband had been consumed by responsibility, forgetting his husband in the process.

Thoma decided it was best to just leave Ayato alone. ‘If he’s working on it so much it must be important.’ He thought to himself as he flopped onto Ayato’s side of the bed in an attempt to be closer to his absent lover. He didn’t even notice the tears rolling down his face before he heard the door gently creak open, warm light flooding in from the doorway Ayato stood in.

Ayato had been completely swamped with work these past few weeks and was completely exhausted, yet he still noticed his husbands gentle sniffling, the way Thoma curled into his pillow, and the way he quickly wiped his tears once he realised Ayato was standing in the doorway.

“You’ve finished working?” Thoma asked with a smile, attempting to conceal the shake in his voice

“For now, but what about you, my dear? Why are you up this late? And why are you crying?” Ayato asked softly as he walked over to their bed, cupping Thoma’s face in his hands and wiping his tears with his thumb

Thoma just looked into his eyes, he was smiling but his eyes were filled with a loneliness even a child could spot, “It’s nothing,” he hesitated a moment before mumbling “just stay with me for tonight.”

Ayato knew his partner well, he knew Thoma must’ve been lonely, he’d been working a lot recently and hadn’t spent proper time together in months, most importantly he knew Thoma was not the type of person to want to burden his loved ones.

“I’m sorry I’ve been busy, my dear. But the paperwork was finalised today, which means it’s all back to normal after tonight.” He pressed a chaste kiss to his husband’s lips in an attempt to soothe him, resting Thoma’s hands in his.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to rush you- I understand you’re busy, I don’t know what’s wrong with me today.” Thoma began tearing up again, wiping them faster than they could appear.
He wasn’t an emotional person usually but his loneliness had festered for months, and being with Ayato now felt like a huge burden had been banished from his mind.

Thoma surged forward and wrapped his arms around Ayato, pressing his face to Ayato’s neck as he mumbled, “It’s silly, but I truly did miss you.” His tone slightly more chipper as his husband finally held him close for the first time in months.

“Don’t speak of yourself that way, dearest. I should be ashamed for making you feel this way.” Ayato said softly as he held Thoma as tightly as he could manage.

They stayed in that tight embrace for a few minutes. Thoma finally let go, pulled back and, looking softly into violet eyes he whispered, “will you finally come to bed with me?” He smiled as he was already pulling his husband into their bed.

“You’ll never have to ask that again, dearest.” He paused as he wrapped Thoma in a loving embrace, “I’ll already be here.” He whispered into their darkened room as a peaceful sleep engulfed them.
