“So, Ultimate student, huh?” Toshi asked, throwing himself onto Ken's bed.It was pretty late somewhere past 10 PM, since the nighttime announcement went off. It was the third day of being stuck in this “killing game”. Three days, none of them had any way of leaving the school. Well, there was a way. If you killed someone and got away with it, you'd be allowed to leave. But also the rules stated all killers would be punished, so- that was useless. The only somewhat useful bit of information they had is they were all Ultimates. And even that wasn't too useful—
“A- ah, yeah. I- it's not that big of a deal.” Ken mumbled softly, sitting down on his bed next to Toshi with the smallest of smiles. The bed was big enough for the both of them, yes, but it also felt so small. Nevertheless, Ken let Toshi lie down on his bed… in his room… at night… all alo-
“Oh yeah, being the top student in all of Japan is nothing, sure.” He scoffed playfully, rolling his eyes as Ken chuckled quietly. “But seriously, do you really know like- everything-?” Toshi asked once more, an eyebrow raised in curiosity. Ken shook his head. “Not everything.” He hummed.
“I mean, I- I know a lot of academic things but, h- history is a strong suit of mine. A- and I'm really good with knowledge surrounding sea life-!” He stated, his tone gaining a bit of excitement to it when he mentioned sea life. “But I'm not good with pop culture stuff- s- sorry-!” He muttered at the end, Toshi laughing softly. “For what, not being fuckin' perfect?” He said with a chuckle, Ken smiling just a bit more.
“Soooo… I can ask you anything related to academics, and you’d answer?” Toshi asked. “Mhm.” Hasegawa nodded with a gentle hum. Toshi sat up with a smirk, an idea bubbling inside his mind. He pulled out a small notepad and blue pen from his lab coat pocket and started scribbling down a few things inside of it. Ken raised an eyebrow in confusion as he watched Toshi do this. Once the chemist was done scribbling stuff down into the notepad, he looked back up at Ken with a smirk.
“Let’s play a little game, ok? I’ll ask you ten questions. If you get 2 or less questions wrong, you win and I’ll.. uh.. do any favour you ask of me. But get more than 2 wrong, it’s game over and uh. I’m stealing one of your ties.” Toshi announced proudly, almost as if he stated the best thing in the world. Ken looked at the chemist for a few seconds before bursting into a small laughter. “The fuck you laughin’ at?” Toshi smirked. “Pff- s- sorry, it’s just- if you want one of my ties so bad, you can have one. I- I have plenty-” Ken offered, shrugging.
Toshi looked at Ken for a hot second before waving his hand dismissively. Shaking off the idea of taking the tie without winning the game. “I wanna see you win.” He smirked, raising the notepad and pen. “Ready?” Toshi asked, Ken nodding in affirmation.
“Alright, uh, what element is represented by- uh- Sb?” Toshi hummed, watching the gears turn inside Ken’s head before he answered- “Antimony- it’s found in bullets and solders.” He stated calmly, like he was reciting something from a book. Toshi smirked and scribbled something down into his notepad. “Good job, that’s correct.” Toshi smiled, the student, in return, shaking his head. “I- it wasn’t much.” Ken replied, eyes drifting off to the side. “Nah, that was cool as shit.” Toshi smirked.
“Ok, uh, what’s twenty-three squ-” “Five hundred twenty nine!” “Wh- hey, I didn’t even get to finish the question!” Toshi shrugged while Ken panicked a bit. “A- Ah, sorry! I didn’t mean to-” “Eh, it’s fine.” Toshi hummed. “Two down, eight to go.”
“I- I’m ready for the next question.” Ken whispered quietly, Toshi nodding and tapping his chin with his pen, thinking up a good question. “What’s the prime factorization of, uh, 72?” Toshi settled on that question, which seemed good enough. Sure, the question was easy as fuck, but it felt good to see Ken confident for once. “2 3 *3 2 !” “Sick! Ok, uh, 2nd president of the u-” “John Adams, a- a federalist!” “Shit, fuck yeah! You’re on a roll, Ken!” Toshi cheered, writing a few things down in his notepad. Ken, letting curiosity take over and peeked over to the bluehead’s notepad. A small blush tinted his cheeks.
“Wh- Why does my name have a he-” “Mention this to anyone and I will strangle you.” Toshi said, words dark but tone and expression quite teasing. Ken chuckled in response, “Next question?” The student asked. Toshi thought for a second before snapping his fingers. “I’ve got a good one. What’s a ‘rubber jungle’?” Toshi smirked, watching Ken think about his question before he mumbled a “damn it!” under his breath. “I- I don’t know-! What is a rubber jungle?!” He asked, voice becoming slightly desperate.
“Huh-? Oh, flight attendant slang, when oxygen masks drop down.” Toshi hummed, twirling a piece of his hair with one of his fingers as Ken stood up and walked over to his desk, opening one of his drawers and rummaging through it. Toshi tilted his head to the side and watched in both confusion and curiosity. “Whatcha lookin’ for?” The chemist asked, kicking his legs over the edge of the other’s bed.
“M- My notebook. I- need it for a second.” The student mumbled in response, essentially ripping through the small drawer before shouting “Found it!” softly and pulling out a sleek, brown notebook in mint condition and sitting down next to Toshi on the bed, taking out a metal pen from his pocket, and scribbling down “Rubber Jungle: Flight Attendant Slang for when Oxygen Masks drop down during an emergency” into his notebook. Toshi took a glance at the writing, back at Ken, and chuckled a bit.
“Pff- wow, for the top student in the nation, your handwriting is dogshit.” “Wh- Hey! I- I have better handwriting when I’m writing serious things-! I- I swear!” Ken stuttered out. Toshi hummed in response and rolled his eyes jokingly. “Suurreee you do.” He said, dragging out the “sure” for emphasis. “I- I’m serious-!” Ken stammered out before sighing. “Next question?”
“Oh yeah-” Toshi said, pulling his knees up to his chest and tapping his chin with his pen before asking. “Who held up the sky i-” “A- Atlas! Th- The father of the Hesperides-!” Ken blurted out, tone full of confidence and a smile across his face. Toshi nodded and scribbled something down into his notepad. “Six down, four to go, you got this, Ken!” Ken smiled a bit more, “I- It’s nothing to cheer me on for, but thanks!”
“Psh, if you say so, anyways, how many species of shark are there in the world?” Toshi asked, watching Ken’s eyes sparkle with excitement. “Oh, I know this one! 512 described species and 23 undescribed ones!” He said, joy evident in his tone. Toshi smiled and scribbled something down into the notepad. “Alright, now for a question about our classmates, who here works with celebrities?” “Wh- but that’s not fair- there’s plenty of people here who do!” “Think literally about it-” Toshi shrugged. Ken huffed a bit and thought about it before saying, “S- Shigeki?” Ken answered, though it sounded more like a question. Toshi grinned, “Ding ding ding!” He chuckled, scribbling something back into his notepad.
“Ok, hm, who here has been to the olympics?” “Uh, T- Tamba, right?” “Mhm.” Toshi hummed, writing something back down into his notepad. “S- So I only have to answer one more question, right?” Ken asked, tilting his head. “Yeah, alright, uh- hm- ok is it true tiger sharks will eat each other?” Toshi inquired with a small hum to his tone. Ken nodded. “It’s true. I- It’s common in marine life, actually.” Ken stated calmly, a small twinkle in his eyes again, which was a shock given the content of his statement. Toshi giggled and scribbled something down into his notepad, once he was done he tossed the notepad and pen onto the floor and clapped his hands. “You only got one wrong, good job, Ken.” He said happily.
“W- Well I should’ve done better and gotten a perfect score-” “Chill, rubber jungles are weird and uncommon, it’s fine.” “I- … f- fine.” Ken mumbled, picking up his notebook and writing down a few things before putting his pen back into his pocket and his notebook back into the drawer.
“So… you owe me a favour?” Ken asked, looking back at Toshi, making sure he had the deal right. “Yea, but only one.” Toshi answered, lying down on the student's bed. Ken thought about what favour he could ask from Toshu before walking over to his closet and grabbing something out of it. Then, he walked back over to Toshi, tossed him a red striped tie, and blurted out. “I want you to trust people more-” He said before adding on- “They’re not out for your head, ok-” He stated. Toshi caught the tie and looked at Ken with a confused expression before sighing. The irony of “They’re not out for you” when they quite literally are but whatever-
“Sure, whatever- I will-” “I- I’m serious.” “Ok ok I will- geez.”
…
…
…
“Y- You can stay here for the night, if you want-” Ken muttered softly, taking his suit jacket off and putting it aside. Toshi flushed up a red colour but sighed and threw his lab coat and goggles onto the floor next to his notepad and pen. “No weird shit, though.” He huffed. “Got it!” Ken replied, turning off the lights of his room and climbed into his bed, sitting down at the side closest to the wall. “Goodnight, Kazutoshi.” Ken hummed softly, pulling the sheets over him and lying down. Toshi smiled lightly, pulling the sheets over him and lying down in bed as well. “Goodnight, Ken.”
