That's Who You Are Now

Summary:

A drabble told by the Ninth Doctor, in which he and Rose have a heartfelt discussion about identity and fate.

Work Text:

"I was not born to be a soldier," I told Rose. "It happened."

"You're not a soldier now," she pointed out.

"Am I not?"

"Do you think you are?"

"I don't know what I am," I sighed. "War changed me. I didn't used to be the man who destroyed his own planet. That's who I am now."

Rose said, "I was born to be a burger-flipper; I was so proud of myself for being a shop girl instead. Look at me now! I explore time and space! You're the man who did that for me. That's who you are now."
