Two Peas in a Pod

Summary:

In this drabble, the Doctor wonders if he could ever have been like the Master.

Notes:

AO3's word counter says there are 99 here; my program says 100 because there is a beginning ellipsis and that counts as a word. Since I like the story as it is, I am leaving it alone.

"Nyssa, what if I hadn't run away? I don't mean in the TARDIS. I mean from the Untempered Schism. Would I have become the Master?"

"Would you have gone mad?"

"Yes."

"No. You're not him."

"I could have become him."

"No. Two different elements, the same element added to each, two different results."

"Very scientific, Nyssa. Yet I feel…."

"Doctor?"

"We were friends. What does that make me?"

"A friend." He scoffed. "If he'd run away, would he have been like you?"

"I suppose not." He laughed. "Two peas in a pod. One bitter."

Nyssa added, "… and one sweet!"
